There is a difference between looking tough and looking like an ape.
Look at MMC Feral Rex and Warbotron Bruticus for examples of tough-looking combiners done right.
IMO, the only thing that can save these official combiners from ugliness is extensive third party retools... or 'mistransformations' like the one above haha.
P.S. It's also worth noting that this gorilla style is not present in the official CW artwork, which again leads me to believe it's simply poor toy design on Hasbro's part:

we cannot compare the actual toy figure with what's illustrated in the comics because the mechanics are simply different. in the comics, the length and size of each individual bots can be altered figuratively to the convenience of the drawer BUT same cannot be done to the actual figures. i don't think it's a poor design just maybe Hasbro is restricted in resources to actually invest in time and money to make sure every stage of transformation is perfect to the eye.
plus, we need to consider that Hasbro is not churning out one combiner at a time, it's multiple combiners at one time so i think Hasbro has done quite an impressive job in the combiner wars line.
it's really unfair to compare it with 3rd parties.

Kangkang like a gorilla.
Arms hanging past the knees. Huge fist. Legs kangkang.
if you want a good looking figure to display, by all means spending thousands and get 3rd parties but if you want a toy which is fun to play with (transformation), get Hasbro. trust me, 3rd parties may look good but a pain in the ass when it comes to transformation. my green giant has been siting in the shelves for so long I don't remember when i last transformed it.

Honestly I like the design. It has the combiner aesthetics. I can understand how Hasbro is working, the safety regulations etc, as well as making sure the toys themselves are appealing and can be accepted by all. So many hoops of fire they have to jump. After all, its ROI over and over again. The kangkang thighs, are way better than 3rd party’s A stance. It gives more pose ability for the figures, not to mention stability. My only gripe with Combiner Wars is the weak hands and feet design, but hey, they are going that Scramble City way, where everybody can be combined with anybody, but this time, hands can be legs vice versa. Its an understandable scenario. Definitely will get Menasor and the Protectorbots. On the third party side, am hoping can complete my Warbotron Bruticus. Hope the company has the balls to bring Japanese G1 combiners like Raiden, Dinoking, Leo Kaiser etc. Personally I am getting bored with G1 US combiners.

^ agree.
my only nitpick with the Hasbro's combiner wars is with the hands and feet, the lack of articulation bothers me but doesn't irritate but then again, these can be fixed with 3rd party add ons (ie. perfect effect)
