In the wild, well, most of the land tortoises try to stay on the dry areas.... when rain, if a little is ok, they do enjoy a little rain. If say african and indian tortoises... well, they don't get much rain. But when flood, they drown... no choice. But most of the tortoises will go to higher land sometimes...
*

yes, they are quite sensitive to detecting temperature changes. they can even travel in the direction of the rainstorm, like galapagos tortoises. some burrow into the ground, only to come out when the floods subside, while others let themselves be carried away by the flood tides only to find themselves in another place tongue.gif . It all depends on the type of habitat and the species.

but one drawback tho, is that softshells can be quite susceptible to shell rot or ulcers because of their ...um....soft shells..! if you keep a softshell do make sure you have a good filter running in your tank and do regular water changes. keeping it in stagnant water without filter is likely to cause disease to the turtle.

funkychips, You are absolutely right smile.gif All turtles need to be kept in clean condition. Water based ones especially.

they do snap sometimes if handled...and they neck is long enough to reach to the back of their shell...it cuts through clean, mind you...my uncle had a bad experience with it some years ago...

same thing with the mata mata...i don't suppose anyone has mata mata hatchlings for sale? i bet those adults are wild caught pieces.

Yeah, and one of my snappers tank got problem suddenly. All the feeding fish i put died in less than 1 hour. I suspect the water got some high toxic content. The Wood cover top got those fungi growth and i think that's what caused the problem. Tomorrow need to sun them and change the tank's water. rclxub.gif
