It is natural for tortoise to do its business inside the water bowl. You will need to clean the water bowl very often. Why they do it inside? Well, I'm not very sure but it could be easier to pass their "stuff" out and also hygenic for them hahaha...

hwa, i don't think the thermo and hygrometer would work that way... or is it just temporary arrangement for the picture?

last time i arrange both the meter like that, but now no liao lar, coz i dun think it's necessary. basically for malaysian weather it's very suitable for star tortoise, and the basking lamp also a waste of money. sweat.gif

that mean u have to soak your tortoise everyday! all star tortoise owner will soak their tortoise almost everyday with warm water, this is to make sure their tortoise is hydrated and also to help they poo lol laugh.gif

you are quite wrong there friend smile.gif .

the thermo and hygrometer should be inside the enclosure, as to monitor the temperature and humidity inside the enclosure. ideally should be at both end of the enclosure, to monitor the hi/lo temperature.

and seeing that malaysian weather is quite erratic, sometimes raining suddenly and gets cold, basking lamp is needed. and no, malaysian weather is not suitable for indian/sri lankan star tortoise, too humid.

i have recently lost a 10" pardalis babcocki (quite big and certainly much more hardy than smaller STs) when the keeper (a friend of mine) left it in her verandah during a rainy night without proper heating. quite heartbreaking when she called and said 'your leopard is dead'.

so guys, be sure to monitor the temperature and humidity of your tortoises accordingly, do research, etc. never overestimate the tortoises' tolerance towards cold and humidity, especially with hatchlings and juveniles.

yeah i read from some other place that thermometer should be placed inside the enclosure and at both end, this is to monitor the temperature gradient so that you can create a basking corner and a much cooler corner for your tortoise.

however my enclosure is kinda small you see, sad.gif basically the whole enclosure will have the same temperature, and if i on the basking light, i realized that the whole enclosure will become warm... sad.gif

that's why i took away the basking lamp and seldom on it, unless my star got running nose or cool weather... sweat.gif

hi all. i got a sad story to tell. sad.gif

the story is, i want to let go my average 3-4 inch RES (Trachemys scripta elegans). currently only 4 left. 3 male, 1 female (if im not mistaken). the reasons is, im moving to puchong. hardly able to play with them now. and i feel bad for that. plus my tank now seem small for them. earlier i want to let go to mother nature, but im afraid they wont be able to survive the real, brutal environment. real world is scary u know. ohmy.gif

the current condition is great, feed once daily in the early morning with wardleys. biweekly oil their shell with gamat oil and weekly check their condition (eyes, limbs, shell) and sunbath every saturday for an hour. very active, react vigorously to a shaking food container. i feed them by hand, 1 pallet at a time. they always bite my finger, but quickly release it as they know it's finger. very tame, i can rub their head and geletek their leher like kucing. but their bites are hard and nyummy. they hardly eat vege.

i want to let them go for free, provided the future owner promise me he/she will take wonderful care of them. PM me if interested. let go only the RES. err my location of hand will be putrajaya and bangi only.

help me to help them.

the white board is actually ceramic tile which is turned up side down, it's good for tortoise dining place, and the rough surface is good for trimming tortoise's nails.

and regarding your star head, usually star tortoise will knock their head up n down when they get nervous biggrin.gif

Correct. laugh.gif

I can see that you already found the potential adopter. Hope you can get a chance to pet them again in the near future. smile.gif

you'd never believe those are red eared sliders... the temperament is amazing, can stroke heads and chins without getting bitten. have to buy a new tank to house them, cause all my other adopted res are quite aggressive (bitey bitey). kudos to leviathan, for providing love and care to his res.

p/s: i'd post some pics here afterwards...

i still haven't paid for the elongata actually tongue.gif. the color is natural, not banana induced. xxxxxy had done some good job on him.

though they go bananas over bananas, most of my fruit eaters are only given fruit once a week.

Yup, once or twice a week is fine. Too much is not good for them also.
