For clearer, more vivid pictures

From low-resolution videos to high-resolution movies − with Sony’s latest picture engine, X-Reality for mobile, everything you see on your display is analysed and selectively processed to give clean, clear and lifelike pictures. Three unique noise reduction features work their magic prior to upscaling, while Sony’s intelligent display technology optimises contrast, texture, outline, colour and noise.
Blazing fast performance

The world’s fastest smartphone processor

We’ve matched the latest Sony software with the all new, super powerful Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor. This advanced Quad-core processor is 75% faster than S4 Pro and gives you maximum power and speed with outstanding battery time – run multiple apps simultaneously, surf the web with little loading time, and stream videos without a break. The Snapdragon 800 processor is asynchronous, which means each core is powered independently. So you get the precise amount of power when you need it, without wasting power when you don’t.

Commonly Known Issues for Z1

1. Yellow screen. You can check against this list if you have a yellow screen or not.

Note: This issue are considered solved as Sony had updated the firmware to include the white balance setting. This will allow user to tune the screen colour to their own liking

This is a guide to flash the latest firmware Android 6.0 Marshmallow. But this process can also be used to flash ANY firmware for ANY Xperia device.

Note that you do not need to unlock your bootloader nor do you need root to flash your handset.

Please read the instructions thoroughly before attempting to flash your phone.

How to Root Your Device

This is Easy Root Tool for various Xperia devices (first developed for Z1 Compact). It's almost one-click root. Currently only Windows is supported, I might add linux support later. Bootloader is untouched!

What you get
  • Root
  • Access to /system rw
Requirements
  • USB debugging enabled
Settings => About phone => Click 7 times on Android Build to unlock developer options
  • Unknown sources enabled
    Settings => Security
  • adb drivers installed
How to use
  1. Download the attachment (latest version) and extract it
  2. Start your phone and plug it to your computer
  3. Run install.bat and follow the instructions on screen
  4. Congratulations! You should now be rooted.
Don't forget to make a donation
What can you do next
  • Make a donation to the people involved
  • Install SuperSU by Chainfire (recommend!) from Google Play Store
  • Install dualrecovery by [NUT]
Download Z1-lockeddualrecovery2.7.XXX-BETA.installer.zip from http://nut.xperia-files.com/, run install.bat and select Option #2
Confirmed devices
  • Z1 Compact - D5503
  • Z1 - C6903
  • Z Ultra - C6802
  • maybe others?

Download (XDA)

*****

Rooting KitKat FW 14.4.A.0.157

So far the only root method that works on the latest firmware 157 is by flashing 108 kernel, root, and flash back 157 kernel. details as in the link

http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/...lb-ubl-t2933298

*****

Rooting Lollipop FW

This method will work on all Xperia devices running Lollipop , KitKat or any other older version.
This will work on both Locked Bootloader and Unlocked Bootloader.

USER WARNING This root method sends your IMEI number to an ip address in china during the process. Only use this root method if you are aware of this and accept the risk.
You have been warned

sharing some shots on my recent trip. photos taken with my new QX10. Must say the optical zoom and OIS is invaluable in these shot. Shooting these Photos with any smartphone camera will be impossible.

other than that, even having the same hardware spec as the camera on Z1, must say QX10 shoots noticeable better photos

the speaker grille does nothing to stop water going in. the seals inside the speaker acts as water proof seal. anyways try keep phone away from water, you may never know which seal will leak after long period of time. water has no friends

thanks

here's some low light / night shot comparison shots between QX10 and Z1

QX10
user posted image

Z1
user posted image

my opinion:
while in day shot, i'll say QX10 is superior to Z1. As for night shot, it's actually a mix.
Z1:
- sharper image, but grainier
- brighter, but not so accurate to actual scene. and seems like a white tint over the image
- light source may overexpose

QX10:
- not as sharp, but less grainy
- darker, but more accurate to actual scene
- colour is more vibrant and more accurate to actual scene

Hi, does anyone here ever experience the notification panel keep sliding down and up and down... WITHOUT ME EVEN TOUCHING THE SCREEN? Sometimes it will even just stuck halfway of the screen, and I have to lock my phone and unlock it again to make it return to normal? Does anyone gets me? Everything seems fine but the notification panel seems to have a mind of its own to annoy me. Occurs randomly most of the time, and really a pain when I'm typing or watching video, and it happens. Any idea what's wrong? Help.

Alright, cool. I'm using PC Companion to detect the firmware to download and it's been hours the progress bar hasn't moved. Do you know where else I can download the firmware from and use Flashtool instead?

just realised the 133 u flashed is for vodafone... maybe that's the problem...

i'll suggest u go to this link and download the MY generic fw. i think the only MY version is 4.3 JB 14.2.A.0.290. flash this fw and then try to update to KK via PC Companion

4k and time shift videos work, but there is one bug. Everytime I restart my phone, I get a popup notification saying my Xperia Home crashed. I'm guessing it could be the fault of Superuser Mod. I've only found and used the one for C6903 Build 14.4.A.0.108.

I also installed just 4K-HFRv1.3.zip. Do I need to install 4kpatch120fps-New(06-06-2014).zip?

It's would be good if you can help me resolve that Xperia home issue. Thanks!

It must have been the Superuser Mod .108 that caused the problem. I used xperia xposed and 4k-HRFv1.3.zip and it's all good. Thanks for sharing what you did. :-)

It must have been the Superuser Mod .108 that caused the problem. I used xperia xposed and 4k-HRFv1.3.zip and it's all good. Thanks for sharing what you did. :-)

nice one!
the 4K seems useless to me, because 1080p video recording is more than enough,,..

I enjoy recording the video in my Z1 tongue.gif

It's likely they included Timeshift in Z2 to encourage people to upgrade.

Guys. Just for sharing. My phone got lcd damage. Since its warranty is finish this october, search good reputation repair shop at lowyat forum and find repair shop name "ifix" . So i send to IFIX shop branch at subang. Cost me RM550 since the reputation is good so i accept it. 3 day later got my phone back. Day 1 after i got my phone, wifi signal so low even 1 meter away from hotspot will drop the connection. Day 2, i find out primary microphone is not function, send to that shop again and they don't want to responsible and accuse me back. They quote me RM80 just for the part only no manwork cost. Now day 5 my digitize is not function half of the screen. Very disappointed with this IFIX shop! Send to Sony services center next week. Don't believe other phone shop anymore. oh one thing i forgot to mention, they didn't use XPERIA Z1 adhesive to stick the screen back, they use super glue and 3M double tape!! When i ask them back why not use Z1 adhesive, they said they fix iphone with 3M double tape too and no problem. I ask them if use 3M d/t how to retain xperia z1 waterproof function? They simply said Z1 waterproof meh? iphone also use adhesive why not waterproof leh?? Me said sohai this people.

as for waterproofing, once open the unit for repairs, no more waterproof, simple as that, even Sony SC

imo. if you want waterproof back. sell off your unit. get Z3

or Z2 since its a bargain now

So they say..

in another thread, the waterproof phone (Z2) was repaired due to water leak into the phone, the owner went back and test it in water, and the phone spoilt again and went for warranty again.

Putting handphones into water is just asking for trouble, it may be waterproof today, one day the seals may fail and bye bye phone.

btw. this has not been mentioned elsewhere..

if there is a leak, and it doesnt affect the main components (ie.. the battery and the power ic) yet you still can use like normal. it doesnt means that rust wont set in and damage the board in the future.

just my opinion. Sony has ald acknowledge the failure of the flaps and are doing away with it on the Z4

Z2 is different. It's more like an experimental product by sony. So no matter how many times you repair, if your unit is defective at start, it's defective at all.
Just my opinion.

hi hi
just want to add, slightly after one year with my Z1 and loving it.

on Nov 1st i brought my Z1 to Viper Challenge, it was dip with mud and pool of muddy water a few times even it is stored on a pouch on my shoulder. took it out and wash it in the lake and that i think was one of the best "indirect" advertisement for Xperia waterproof phones.

as i took it out near a lake and wash it in water because it was covered with mud stains from the mud pools, lines of people were looking as i wash the phone with ohmy.gif blink.gif and then i cleared away the stains, swing it a bit to get the water drops off the phone as much as possible and use it to take picture. i heard an exclaimation "ohh thats an xperia" from somewhere... hahaha...

i claim to customers, you will never know when water seeps into your device when it rains. go on and claim its gimmick, you will realize the use one day.

not like sammy, 2K screen which is totally a gimmick that no one's gonna use. doh.gif

well, 2k screen may still be consider gimmick this year. in fact i think not much apps really take advantage of the extra pixel

however, come next year, if all the rumour turn out to be true, 2k screen will become a "standard" for most, if not all, flagship model (whether u like it or not). hopefully by then there will be more apps that really take advantage of the extra pixels

Actually Sony's battery is very durable. Constantly complete discharge is totally not recommended as batteries nowadays wears faster.

Nowadays for the battery is better not to let it go down so low. Battery last longer that way. Use a powerbank to prevent it.

edit: been testing the sound, this mod is awesome! not only it adds the stereo speaker, but listening via earphone, the bass and clarity have been improved as well. Highly recommended! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Not sure why then... I am playing transformers legend, angry bird transformers, coc, swamp attack and Ice age village.... Among these I notice coc drain battery the least.

Even with gaming, I usually can get sot of around 3 hours, just enough to last me till the end of the day.

From day 1 I use GMail app by Google directly as my email is gmail anyway. I rarely see updates on the native email apps since I guess they are OS related.

i did use the email apps cos it allows me to setup both my gmail and yahoo mail in the app. but i seldom check email using my z1. still prefer to check email via my laptop.

so, when composing new email, as soon as i type in several alphabets, it will automatically show those email address that have those alphabets. similar to when we type a few number in keypad, it will show those contacts with those number.

hi,

how you guys think about the camera of this Z1? I dont believe Sony delivering the good camera function on this smartphone. The picture outcome was awful and beyond terrible and i cant believe that the premium smartphone can be this horrible.

My 3gs iphone takes better picture and look good compared to xperia Z1.

below was the sample taken by iphone 3gs and xperia z1 with both with auto mood. no modding. have a look at the light exposure, i cant believe it. any u guys have recommendation to fox this or only by FW update?

I been using this phone for more than a year but noticed that only certain apps have "unread" message number (Facebook, default SMS app, default Phone app).

How do I enable this for Whatsapp/Kakaotalk as well? This is my first Android phone and I do not root it anyway.

Well, this is quite a bummer coming from ex-iPhone user. Most of the time I will read directly if the notification comes but there are times I accidentally clear all my notification and I forgot to read my messages.

I am asking this as I saw Samsung phones do support this feature and wondering why Sony does not support this at all?

Hey guys, I got a question for those who are using stock camera mods like 4k video. Do you have problems sending Whatsapp videos that are a minute long?

I've been trying out this DstrikerZ1 custom ROM and just discovered Whatsapp crashes when I try to do that.

see if got any results
try to use other camera apps

so far i satisfied with cam

Lady, I can't stand the point where you said, asking question in this thread reflects gets no response. But the fact is, you never asked a single question in this thread.

Regarding your battery problem, try to use an alternative adapter and see if it charges faster. doh.gif

Lady, I can't stand the point where you said, asking question in this thread reflects gets no response. But the fact is, you never asked a single question in this thread.

Regarding your battery problem, try to use an alternative adapter and see if it charges faster. doh.gif

Definitely not this version or so.
But I did asked, I am sure of it.
You should ask before you assumed something.
Nothing is wrong there , mate.

And I still couldnt find a valid point as to why people get all fired up for a small issue until need to tag here?
Is it really that hurtful just cause someone said "hey nobody reply me there so its okay I found another alternative, so no thanks." ?

And I am pretty sure there are good people here that answered me there and I welcomed most and I replied them in a very well mannered. So i still dont understand as to why mudkip would feel I was being offensive. Unless he is really that immature then..

Please do not tag me with my forum name just for the sake of small issue like this.
Thank you. Your cooperation is much welcomed. And I am saying this as polite and as friendly as I can.
So dont assume any offensive behaviour here now.
Good day.

is it just me or everyone dislike sony provided email app? it is pretty slow compare to gmail app... and it does not have your frequent contact email showed when you try to add them in your new email...
*
I use both gmail and stock email apps, gmail for my personal and stock email apps for working need.
Stock email apps consume a lot of battery life and the phone temperature is always warm if you are using default setting. The Exchange Service use more battery than the screen!!! I dunno this is Sony fault or what.
Battery usage back to normal after I made some change in the email setting. (Read on some forum they said this is caused by "Exchange Service")

no corrosion, just the glue not strong enough to hold it

Guys, my speaker mesh/grill came off from its place, now it gone missing.
Any idea where I can get a new one?

How come for a device which is rated waterproof, after using it in a pool for a short period to take pictures, now the mesh grill fell off, for almost 1 day, the camera launched itself.

Does Sony warranty cover this?

Hey guys. Im thinking of getting maybe Xperia Z, Z1 or Z2 after CNY. The reason I can only get it now is budget issue, and my wife like Sony products. I hv few questions to ask the lucky owners here.

1. Whats the personal pros and cons of this phone (after months/years of usage)?
2. Is there any major/minor issues for this phone?
3. Is there any fix for the issues? If yes, and it stated here, I would definitely read from page 1 thumbup.gif
4. Even if I get an AP set, wouldn't be a problem, right? Just need to deal with the shop for warranty issues?

Thats all Im concerned at the moment..

THANKS A BUNCH!! notworthy.gif

I'm using z1 as a second phone. About 1 year plus phone.
The only thing I concern about it the proximity sensor and the camera.
Despite being 20.7mp, the quality a bit soft if using auto. Manual could be better but sometimes you just need a quick shot and using manual setting might miss the moment.
As for proximity, have issue after upgrading to 4.4.4. Won't turn off the screen during calls. Not sure hardware or software issue. Will need to wait for next updates and see how.
Oh and the notification sound is quite soft. Always missed notification ..

if the cable is good, it should fully charge your phone in 3 or 3.5 hours. roughly the same as microUSB cable.

i had bad experience whereby the magnetic cable charges my phone very slow after about 3 months using it. it's like whole night (6 hours at least) only charges 10-20%. if you experience such similar situation, you might want to change to another cable and see if the magnetic cable is faulty

This is the one part that I do not like about the magnetic cable. At least if it's not properly charging, the phone should not light up the charging indicator. Nowadays if I'm charging before I sleep, I'm gonna make sure it charges at least 1% after I put down the phone. Otherwise, my cable might not charge at all.

I changed back to USB cable for charging lately when I found out that the magnetic cable failed to provide efficient charging after long used (6mths the most).
The only pro for magnetic cable is to keep your flip intact. But if you use it wisely, it can last eternally (myth though), currently a z1 user since Feb 2014.

but thank god, my bro found my grill stick at charger cable.
so my phone back to 'elegant' mode

for missing grill, ive no idea
such disappointment for flagship phone got cheap adhesive for waterproofing
i just applied uhu glue lol
just be careful there got thin gasket around the mesh/grill which i believe some part of waterproofing purpose
and small hole at the center. u put glue = GG hahaha
backup & reset phone is the last you can try, but try to use other adapter/cables 1st

Found a seller on ebay selling that mesh grill, priced around RM16. Now waiting for it to arrive.

mine charges damn slow after 3 months use. it's like whole night only charges 10-20%. really pointless to use that cable anymore. And also, i think it cause some power unstable with my phone. my phone keep hanging almost on daily basis that time. i tried factory reset and reflash the rom. still no cure and i tot that time was hardware fault. later i got fed up and stop using the slow charging magnetic cable, my phone return back to normal. no more hanging or so.

Just want to share, I also previously used the magnetic cable then after a while its charging ability significantly depreciated. Now been using this dock, bought cheaply via (Justbuy.my).

I noticed it could be imitation, but it serves me well for 4 months now rclxms.gif

Let's say for my phone buying tdy:
Initially I plan to look at Z1 compact, after go through the shop they say Z1 compact ady no stock, but they have Z1, and also thye also ask me to look at Huawei Honor 6 first.
After I look to honor 6 I feel like although the spec is ok but got no trust abt the firmware update for Huawei, so end up turn to Z1

For you guys charging via magnetic cable, what plug are you using? Using an old ASUS plug, I can see the charging goes on and off. But once I switch to a Belkin, it's all ok.

No such issues if I'm charging via the microUSB though.

What is the output power of your plug?
If the amp output of the plug is larger than 800a then it can charge.

Which FTF to flash if we want to get Android 5.0 (or maybe 5.1) ASAP? tongue.gif
Won't harm our phone even change firmware version right?

sony have not yet release the official android 5.0, but is expected this month, or next.

u can only get android 5.0 from those custom ROM as of now. you can search for custom rom from XDA

http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1

but do know what u r doing and the risk involved when flashing custom rom

Does anyone here know where's the recommended place to replace the metal middle frame for Z1 as shown in the picture? Also, what's the price range for the frame?

The scratches + dent is too much for me after 1+ year of using doh.gif

then same case as mine. but mine not as serious as yours. usually i experience the sudden shut down at 30% battery level. like u, if i play games at around 30%, after awhile my phone will just shut down cos of battery empty. can't power on unless i charge my phone.

from my experience, this is a sign that our battery has worn off and needs to be replaced. however i am still having a slight hope that a factory reset may solve the problem. but i am reluctant to do so now seeing lollipop update is on the horizon.

if after update and factory reset still having same problem, i'll get the battery replace then

I highly suspect your case will be battery. Software is optimized to read your battery levels accurately. If there is sudden shutdown at certain percentage levels, means the battery wear is high.

about the batt, let see for tomorrow, still charging at 15% from 10pm after done installing sweat.gif

overall, the performance cant tell the difference, feel like same
just the interface,
1) the notification slider need to swipe down twice to go setting menu instead using tab menu
and the brightness can set in realtime at this menu.
2) standby screen got notification (i disable it..dont like biggrin.gif )
3)the icon got bigger lol
4) multiple user account (i found this quite useless unless use tab)
5) new interface style for phone & sms (got float button for compose/dialing)

camera:
1) overall i feel same, just the picture quality with a lot noises/loss of details than previous.
dunno if my lense got dust, will try again tomorrow with bright area.

2) got burst with long press (i forgot previous already got or not)
3) touch block (disable screen touch, good for underwater shooting thumbup.gif )

well, thats all i can see the diff. for now
waiting for others feedback thumbup.gif

Sure it will be very costly but you may make a call to ask them the replacement cost first. If you want to get it done outside, please ensure your phone is still water proof sweat.gif

^wow, mine also same nowadays. when reach 30% or so, suddenly shutdown or down to very low batt <10%.

funny thing is there was twice i reboot to recovery then reboot normal. The batt level returns to 70+%.. doh.gif

but I guess something really wrong with the battery already.

from what we are experiencing here, the battery lifespan is around 1.5 years only (normal use, overnight charging etc)

just to share that i updates and its now lollipop. rclxms.gif
took like an hour to 90min though.

one thing i notice is that the theme's in personalization, only changes the wallpaper and not the buttons or menu color.

It's OK to restart. The update on phone has not started yet. There will be a pop up telling you to plug your phone and click OK before it goes into updating your phone.

//beware if out of sudden if ALL of your button suddenly not responding
just use reset button at sim card area to restart phone

yup subjective..but i compared it with my normal daily usage, before and after using kitkat.. feels worst.. dont really think its the battery since before update it was ok.. normal usage with same settings applied as kitkat.. perhaps greenify really does its job on kitkat before.... but kinda frustrating...cant barely last half working day.. might be reverting back to 108 firmware until its solved.

Took mine to the Sony center. I think it was less than RM550 but took around 3 weeks. Waterproof suppose to work but didn't test it out.

Just updated mine to lollipop. After the update feels that the phone lags and always hot... Battery draining like no tomorrow. Plug in the charger and the phone was charging very slow. I had to switch off my phone to let it charge.

after charging the phone to about 50%, on the phone and straight do a factory reset. After the rest, everything is good. No more lah and everything is smooth. Phone no longer drain as much battery as before. Battery life so far seems the same to me as in kk.

So far this is what I think of the update:

Things I like:
- smooth ui. I think better than kk.
- notification at lock screen. I find this useful.
- double swipe for quick settings. I think this is easier to access with single hand

Things I don't like:
- huge icons! I think it's very ugly.

This time I just manually copy some of my photos to sdcard. I did not backup any apps or game data as most are saved in the game server. After reset I just redownload all the apps and most data will be retrieve.

to reset, go to settings--- backup & reset--- factory data reset
to backup, you may use the backup and restore app found in your app drawer.

My thoughts after lollipop:

1. Quick setting function gone (hold location button and tap setting to go to location setting)

2. No silent phone shortcut, not even using power key

3. No more quick setting widget (e.g Wi-Fi toggle widget)

4. Any way to remove 'what's new' bloatware and google bar on top of every page?

5. Hope notification text can scroll left to right

For item number 4, you can, just long press on the blank space until it comes up with widget, themes, etc, you have the hide option of the Google search bar. And for what's new, it is required as Sony update centre replaced by it.

Hye,

I browsed through this thread but can't seem to find an answer. Does the Lollipop update for Z1 support 'double tap to wake'? Sorry if I missed out the answer in anyone's reply. notworthy.gif
*
No. Change of UI material design and some tweaks here and there.
Don't expect too much as there is not much different.

Xposed Lollipop will causing our Xperia Z1 bootloop.

Finally we got a fix here from XDA.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.p...0&postcount=123?

I attached the download here as well.

Things to do before start
1) Make sure you are running Lollipop 5.0.2
2) Make sure it is root
3) Make sure you have XZDualRecovery 2.18.12 (This is a Must!)

Steps

1) Reboot to recovery
2) Flash Xposed (xposed-arm-20150308.zip)
3) Flash below after flashed xposed
Attached File  xposed_sonyfix_v2.1.zip ( 422.87k ) Number of downloads: 1

Flash below to uninstall exposed if you facing boot loop
Attached File  xposed_uninstall.zip ( 179.08k ) Number of downloads: 1

Wrong...you can have double tap to wake by tweaking the kernel. My Old Nexus4 got that function by flashing custom kernel. Not sure if got def make it on XDA with Z1 though. You can even have gesture shortcuts like OPPO by tweaking the kernel.

Yes, but still. You need recovery.
If your Z1 have recovery. It can be easily root. But don't have, u will have to revert to kitkat. Get the recovery, root, update and root.

No use. Tweaking kernel for that feature results in battery draining.
They also need to have the hardware to do so.

Some how you are right.
I knew about this when I was using Galaxy S2.
To detect the screen activity, you will need to have a permanent wake lock. Else the screen won't detect the touch.
But I am not so sure about are we having something like "new method" appear in Z1. Haha...

Anyway, we need to unlocked the bootloader to install custom kernel.

From my experience it drain that much.Maybe like 3-4% only difference from using and not using it.Well worth it considering I sleep&wake my phone many time.

Im not sure if it needed any other hardware though. What hardware it need?

Im not sure how the kernel developer done it but it can go to deep sleep. You can also adjust which part of the screen that response to double tap to wake rather than the whole screen. Which will reduce battery drain also. Can also set it to only wake up only when you pick up the phone like HTC One M8&M9.

The hardware requires a digitizer with screen off gestures. Z1 can enable it with software while Z1 compact can't due to lack of such digitizer.

initially after i did the factory reset, i too feel that my battery life have got better. no more sudden shut down due to battery empty. but after maybe 2 days using, the problem came back i think. will need longer time to monitor.

but anyway, i can really feel my battery bulging, so i may send for battery replacement these few days

Hi, have you send your phone for battery replacement? If yes, can you share the price and duration for the service center to change the battery? Thank.

No I can't. The phone vibrate for three times when I try to reset via Power + Volume up.

Previously the Phone did came alive for awhile with Sony Logo and then a loading screen then it just went dead from there.

When I try to connect to computer the device manager doesn't recognize the device. I can see the exclamation mark with the word "S1 Fastboot" there. Tried downloading some usb drivers but it just writes installation failed.

Anyone ever lost the tiny metallic ring around the "start button" ?
Where can I replace it?

Just noticed it when the feeling of the button feels different out of the sudden. Then I noticed that it is not there anymore.

Worried that it might affect the waterproof ability of the phone

If you bought it during a promotional period, there is 2 years warranty.

Btw, does your back panel bulge? Because every dismantling, sometimes they won't properly seal the back panel which results in waterproof failure.

Just curious, does wear and tear such as the rubber seal almost fell off or speaker grill came off eligible for a warranty claim? I dare not use my Z1 near water afraid the waterproofing has been compromised.

Better not. And I don't think it's not eligible for warranty claim.
