Rj45 is the jack. It is the normal cable we use in the house. You can go to any computer shop and ask them to make 1 RJ45 Straight Cable for you. I think 2 M should be sufficient.

That's one of the benefits of Computing subjects. You rarely need books because technology moves so fast that by the time it hits the press, the contents will be outdated.
Having said that, I still have some reference books that I need, like Stroustrup's excellent C++ book and the OpenGL one. However, you can get e-book versions of them all over (I just can't read e-books).

Computing students do require more bandwidth than your average student. Last session, my project had a large source repository (because it was a pretty large project). In addition, we have to download many software libraries for our projects. You can of course do it at uni if you bring your laptop in, but you can't be there all the time. You'll appreciate a fast, generous bandwidth when you need to get something done at 3am in the morning.

It's the type of cable you connect to your laptop's Ethernet port, not modem.

Books wise, I agree. The prices in the uni bookshop are murder. I got some of my books from Amazon.com and even with shipping (from Malaysia interestingly), still saved $30 on one book. Do yourselves a favor and get a Visa Debit card (most banks should have one). It really helps.

do what i do, go to University Malaya koperasi bookstore. eg i had 1 textbook which cost $130 aud cry.gif but i bought it for Rm60++ rclxms.gif . same text same content same everything. MPH in malaysia itself is selling for Rm150++ .
u gotta love the price discrimanation + subsidies in University Malaya rclxms.gif rclxms.gif thumbup.gif

of course university malaya doesnt carry all the books that u may need. luck i guess.

Serious ? some how i doubt that, last time i checked in the internet forum, even 'unlimited' has its limit. If it's true then lucky you especially broadband speed ...... which is impressive.

Course webpages, past students, uni bookshop textlist.
Sometimes it's not a good idea to buy them too early. In some of my courses, the lecturer will tell us that the textbook is not compulsory, which usually means you don't need it (and it won't be used). The lecturer may also change the textbook from that used in the previous session.
You can also purchase 2nd hand textbooks.

I remember downloading a software that was 7 gig. That was for my Image Processing project. And i had to download another additional 10 gig worth of pictures, in high resolution as a database for the project. Maybe more than 10 gig because i busted my macbook's hard drive space and had to get a 500 HDD.
*
woah, that amount ! , it's going to bust my monthly quota limit.

arlo.. i'll be studying at melb u next month. anyone staying at college square lygon or know anyone who's staying there? want to know what others think about that place.. and how's the internet there tongue.gif
*
Lygon... lots of Italian chicks... no, food, I mean food !! sweat.gif

College Square is pretty expensive, but for first timers in Melbourne with no friends'/relatives' place to tumpang, colleges or hostels are pretty much your choice for the time being. Some of my friends do enjoy staying at CS, but some say it's a drab place/

The internet's quite bad... to be fair, it's bearable, but you're better off having your own line and ISP anyway.

Good airlines, like MAS and SIA allow 30kg if you're a student. You must inform them about this when you purchase your tickets.

Added on January 15, 2008, 1:05 pm
I use more than that.
*
I get 40kg via SIA rclxm9.gif
Students get good deals from SIA. Seriously.

QUOTE(zltan @ Jan 15 2008, 09:05 PM)
Really, toothpaste is not expensive there, just bring one box and it should be sufficient. Try to buy whatever books you can here(if you have enough luggage space, since most of them are cheaper here)

Also, remember an adapter!
*
Adapter... oh yeah. Best thing to do is to bring at least one, and don't forget to bring an extension socket.

Toiletries... if possible, get them in Msia and bring them across. Why pay AUD10 for a small bottle of shampoo when you only need to pay RM 10 back home? You'll probably need at least 3, 4 per year (if you bathe everyday, which you should !! Even in winter !!)... do the math. You save RM20 per bottle, so say 4 bottles will save you up to RM80... do this for every other toiletries and utilities and see how much yo usave.

I even pack dry food over to Melbourne, especially Nescafe, my eyeopener for the day. Why pay 12AUD when I can get it for RM 10? And since I have to cook my own meals, I try to bring as much as possible.... After all, I have 40kg whistling.gif

Books on the other hand, well it depends. If you really want to save, use the library. Most of the time brand new textbooks are pretty much useless since you'll probably use less than half the chapters. Be a library bug and snap the books ASAP or zap only the chapters you need. Of course, if you already know whatever books that is confirmed to be useful, it helps to bring it from Msia.

40 kg ? I fly SQ as well and they told me officially in an email that I get 30kg .... so there exists three possibilities here :
1. its the official 30kg + close eye 10kg... which happens quite often if u go to the airport early enuf ..
2. u're travelling business class
3. the check in counter fella is ur relative or friend.

so which is it?

i stayed at college square before. no u cant get ur own ISP . unless u get Unwired (wireless broadband ) <- expensive
the internet at college square is downright horrendous. everytime people complained, they made it worse.

to sum it up college square internet
1. SLOW like max speed download is 30kb/s
2. always auto logout from ur internet
3. frigging expensive compared to external ISP
4. shit service

actually one of the reasons why i moved out of college square end of last year
but hey if u can look past the internet service , college square is actually a really decent place to stay.
for now lygon >> swanston in terms of facilities. + its cheaper too.
