I guess you can do it manually if you're comfortable with it. The more you're prepared for the worst the better (full os and data backup; look for good drivers for your models; etc.) For laptops/tablets/etc., try check with manufacturer support page. I think in the last few weeks manufacturers have released the list of eligible models that can get official w10 drivers from them. For those which are not in the list, you can still do manual upgrades. It's just that you find compatible drivers yourself.

how to do manual?
1. clone your drive/make system image, and make full data backup. (you must do this. this is a fail-safe so that you can restore your system if you encountered problems)
2. check and download all drivers compatible to w10 for you computer.
3. use media creation tool to get the iso with correct windows version (home, 32/64 bit that matches your current os). make bootable usb/dvd with it.
4. connect your computer to internet. make sure the os is activated. run setup.exe in usb/dvd in windows to proceed.
5. after upgrade, install drivers if necessary. for intel machines, starts with intel chipset/inf driver.
6. connect to internet, and make sure w10 can be activated.

the upgrade offer started since 29 july 2015, so you're right within 'the official transition' period. the whole upgrade process doesn't involve product key. during the upgrade, hardware id of your computer is sent to and stored at ms activation server (hence you need a working internet connection during the upgrade process). for subsequent clean installs on the same device will no long require a key. (ms activation server uses the unique hardware id during upgrade to identify your computer, and activate your copy of w10 automatically if it matches)

Good to be back on Win 8.1 biggrin.gif Did a clean install, wasn't easy trying to install + update all games. sweat.gif

As for Windows 10 ; see you again in the future perhaps next year. smile.gif

Issues faced with Windows 10:

- Suddenly spike in hardware resource usage (Norton 360 will popup report 'this app has high resource usage...')
- MKV files ; Windows 10 natively supports MKV. Unfortunately, this is where the problem lies. Still need codec for certain containers.
- Edge Browser; good for tablet perhaps, but seriously lacking.
- The Start Menu ; still displays All Apps by alphabet order shocking.gif What happened to the return to the classic Start Menu > Programs > Network/Accessories/Program Name ; still need to search by alphabet for a new app *Oddly I am so used to Win 8.1 Start though
- Games like GTA V (the only game tested on Win 10 thus far) have odd slowdowns never encountered previously (could be Nvidia driver)

Teething problems, issues with playing files over network (keeps prompting password even though Password Sharing disabled) and the beloved Start Menu once again sorted by alphabets. To top it all off, the default wallpaper is The Shining meets + Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Couldn't they just put a 'digital/art' version of it?

Not complaining (lol, well maybe) but rather stating the "difficulties/challenges" faced thus far. Going back to Win 8.1 was an absolute joy.

AFAIK it will come automatically, there's pretty much nothing you can do.

But you can always upgrade 'manually' using ISO file downloaded from Microsoft.
I recommend you check around the Internet though, to see if your laptop model is ready for upgrade to Win10, since usually people face a lot of driver compatibility issue after upgrading.

this might be related to how your home network was set up. maybe you should check that out first.

there is a potential issue with nvidia drivers which were report to brick certain samsung and lg display panels in laptops. the identified display panels are used in alienware.
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=75958864

(i think this was why owners with nvidia gpus cannot pass w10 upgrade validation)
