Sigh... maybe I shouldn't have dived in so soon.

I am having issues playing MKV files on Windows 10.

I have been using Haali Media Splitter + AC3Filter, that's it. Wanted to keep codecs as simple as possible.

After upgrading to Windows 10, I am no longer able to play MKV files.

The "Movies & TV" app as well as "Windows Media Player" fails (it just loads/look like it is starting).

I believe most are using third party video players (e.g. VLC Player) but I am just wondering why is this happening.

On a side note; the default wallpaper sweat.gif Too dark. I always use default wallpaper (8.1 -> yellow/orange).

Try mpc-hc, mpc-hc.org (i use nightly at nightly.mpc-hc.org). It's simple enough. Yeah not all codecs are supported with ms app. I have tested mkv files and yes it failed to play some demos downloaded from internet.

Well, that's quite a disappointment. Just installed Win 8.1 Pro (bought two licenses online) on a laptop at home and it worked like charm. I didn't know I loved Windows 8.1 that much sweat.gif

Also noticed some issues with my games; Ubisoft's Far Cry 4 had to be reinstalled and took me ages to update everything, luckily game profile still there.

Noticed that games like GTA V hitch a bit, though the frame-rate seem to have improved in most parts.

But by far is the MKV file issue. I don't just play MKV files, I use my home network to access a share folder where I store all of my stuff and Windows 10 keeps prompting me to enter password to access this folder even though I already turned on Password Protection/Turn on Network Sharing/Saved the password. mad.gif Do I really have to seek more info online? Yeah, probably. But really?

This sucks pretty bad in terms of 'having to do extra work'... was doing just fine with Win 8.1 and then move to Win 10. I should have known better. Yeah, I should have done my homework/using tried and tested methods.

And what's with the newly designed Control Panel? Uninstalling 'apps' that look like it was meant for tablets? Apa ni... and gone is the sidebar access too which oddly I learnt to use and like; isn't that what most Win 7 -> 8 users have been told to do??

Enough with the redesign la!

/end of rant

I might be going back to Win 8.1 cry.gif

Screw this.

For now.

Want me to rant on the 'new' Start Menu? I better not.

Microsoft Edge:

"Right-click".

No 'Save target as'.

"Walks away".

doh.gif

Some say can suggest in the feedback. I say (again) really Microsoft?

I dun bother about Edge.  First thing after clean installation is to install Google Chrome, sign in with my google ID >> everything restored nicely - my bookmarks, passwords, everything.  thumbup.gif

EDIT: I never bother about MS browsers - have been using Netscape Navigator, Firefox and now Google Chrome.

I was looking forward to Edge after the initial 'hype' of Microsoft rebuilding their browser to rival Firefox/Chrome. I have been quite wrong about Windows 10 thus far. Damn you free upgrade... indeed I was excited about the upgrade and even kept checking to see if it was ready. Lo and behold what has become of it.

Edge is still new.. MS built it from scratch so some feature might not be there.

It's a shame really, they could have retained a lot of the frequently used features of IE. I am sure there will be future updates to address these concerns, but still, not a good first impression.

I still can't wrap my head around the need to re-design certain features in Windows.

If you look at iOS, they keep "refining" the interface/usability but never really putting the user at a loss. You want that familiarity instead of questioning what you have to do.

As time goes on, I personally hope I will catch on with Windows 10.

Let's just hope that will be in less than a year's time while its still free. smile.gif

Good to be back on Win 8.1 biggrin.gif Did a clean install, wasn't easy trying to install + update all games. sweat.gif

As for Windows 10 ; see you again in the future perhaps next year. smile.gif

Issues faced with Windows 10:

- Suddenly spike in hardware resource usage (Norton 360 will popup report 'this app has high resource usage...')
- MKV files ; Windows 10 natively supports MKV. Unfortunately, this is where the problem lies. Still need codec for certain containers.
- Edge Browser; good for tablet perhaps, but seriously lacking.
- The Start Menu ; still displays All Apps by alphabet order shocking.gif What happened to the return to the classic Start Menu > Programs > Network/Accessories/Program Name ; still need to search by alphabet for a new app *Oddly I am so used to Win 8.1 Start though
- Games like GTA V (the only game tested on Win 10 thus far) have odd slowdowns never encountered previously (could be Nvidia driver)

Teething problems, issues with playing files over network (keeps prompting password even though Password Sharing disabled) and the beloved Start Menu once again sorted by alphabets. To top it all off, the default wallpaper is The Shining meets + Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Couldn't they just put a 'digital/art' version of it?

Not complaining (lol, well maybe) but rather stating the "difficulties/challenges" faced thus far. Going back to Win 8.1 was an absolute joy.
