I have not receive any Win10 notification on my Win7 PC. Is it safe to update with
Media Creation Tool? Will this be stable?.

if you know what you're doing and be prepared for the worst, yes it's safe to do it manually. just back up everything before doing so, and get all w10 compatible drivers for your system first (chipset, audio, gpu, network adapter, etc.). i think you should also do a small research on internet about your computer hardware. it's likely there were someone that have done the upgrade before you.

if you're not comfortable of doing the above, it's better to just wait for it.

before you jump into it, know that w10 might not be a good choice for some. i think you should find that out first. the os itself is stable. but some new features, like telemetry, loss of user control (windows updates), ui changes, etc., might be hard to swallow.

Appreciate yr detail input. I really like my Win7 & have no issues with it. Like the saying goes why fix when its not broken?
I know still will need to upgrade later. Will wait, still plenty of time. No hurry. biggrin.gif

right. the free upgrade offer is valid until july next year smile.gif

just spend some time to get to know w10 (e.g. reading more user reviews/comments), especially anything relevant to your system. the more you do preparations for the worst the better.

Anyone else having issues with desktop icons only appearing blank? with a white looking file.
Also thumbnails for image file also sometimes has some issues..

Not sure why but windows always ask me what default app to run docx. or mkv for example.
Even when I saved it as default, when checking the checkbox.

I manually searched for the touchpad driver for my laptop model on the manufacturer website, and it solved the problem.

my 1 is build 10074, however how come it won't upgrade itself? since now already running to 10525.

maybe your build is too old. there were newer builds that ms released a few weeks before the official release, and different keys were used for insider program.

before doing anything be sure you check this page first, http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2...ew-build-10525/

i think you should be able to upgrade your copy with the iso, but i might be wrong.

oh. activation. with activated w8.1, and the computer connected to internet during the upgrade process, w10 will be activated automatically. you cannot use w8.1 key for w10 os.

did you change any hardware after upgrade?

if you have created a os clone, or system image, before you did the upgrade, restore the system to w8.1 with it, and try again. if not, you do a fresh install of w8.1, activate it, and then try again.

i tried 2 type of installation

no.1 install 8.1 activated, then install windows10 from windows update ( @window10 cd key not activated)

no.2 wipe everything direct install windows10 (also same cd key cant be activated)

no.1 was the actual upgrade path. no. 2 will not work (incompatible key because of different os versions).

i think you should reinstall w8.1, activate it online or by phone, make a system image, then do the upgrade again.

you can use media creation tool to download the correct iso, make a bootable usb with it, and run setup.exe in windows to upgrade. don't disconnect your computer from internet when you upgrade.

"$Windows.~WS" is the temp file used by the GWX app to preload the w10 right?
if i already safely upgraded my OS using the media creation tool, is it safe for me to delete the "$Windows.~WS" as well as "$Windows.~BT"?

thanks

BTW, cortana still kept asking me my name/nickname everytime i boot up my pc and chrome froze everytime i try to Snap into halves

that's from iso. the folder created by gwx is $Windows.~BT. yes you can remove them.

no idea about cortana or that weird behavior of chrome. i don't use chrome. maybe someone else who use cortana or chrome can shed some light on these.
