It may have enhanced features or facility but I think the feel and build quality will not be entirely improved and like holding an upgraded "350D MkII"

is it full frame? Or maybe not......
Looks interesting. Maybe they might launch this 400D together with the EOS 3D. Or has that already been released? This post has been edited by julchin_09: Aug 25 2006, 03:01 AM |

Seems like the 400D is just a nominal revision of the 350D.
Nothing really major here. Nothing to make people run out to the store and buy one. Not revolutionary enough to sway people from the Sony Alpha A100 or the D80, IMHO. All this competition though, is very good for us consumers! |

QUOTE(kitman @ Aug 25 2006, 12:59 PM) nikon and canon overated ...... Its a very different ball game altogether in the digital & hi-tech electronics field.Look at Canon, Nikon, Oly, Pentax, Konica FILM SLR. Each offered some models which became a legend and unique in its own right. They didn't simply churn or upgrade new models every now and then like what's happening now. Its was like having hand made Rolex with precision engineering for keeps, unlike now we're like flooded with cams that would have a shorter lifespan and worthless in due time. |

QUOTE(kitman @ Aug 25 2006, 11:44 AM) friend shopping dslr now ..... currently more towards sony alpha. times are good for entry dslr this next couple of months. You can't place everything in this order. It will be very difficult to choose as you are comparing apple, pear and orange together.we have: pentax k100d olympus e500 olympus e330 sony alpha a100 nikon d50 nikon d80 canon 350d canon 350d successor 1st you might want to think of budget. The list you will have would be... low budget: Nikon D50 (no stock) Pentax K100D average budget: Olympus E500 Sony A100 Canon 350D Nikon D70s above average budget: Olympus E330 Canon 400D Nikon D80 If budget is not a problem, then you have to go for features rich battle. Choose whichever you want the most. Low light performance, Anti camera shake, Anti dust and etc etc... Sony A100 is not that bad after all. It is one of the features rich camera body on the list. Albeit from poor ISO, it does carry anti camera shake, anti dust, eye-piece auto focus sensor and etc etc. As for K100D, though it had a little bit performance issue but what do you expect for a 2k range of dslr? As for Canon 400D and Nikon D80, though it is nice entry level but the price would be a little too expensive. I believe those models are close to 4k plus. So is it worth to toss in extra money to get a little high tech? Just think what you need the most will do... Not that Canon and Nikon can dominate the market. Others are equally good only depends on what you prefer. Some may goes for brand... but I would say choose whichever offer you the one that you need the most. |

i think D80 and 400D is different class...400D will be more in the price range of 350D..a direct replacement model IMHO....
as for D80 is somewhat in a fnny range between D70s and 30D |

here have a similiar topic and some prices references And while everyone saying D80 is similiar to D200 ,dont forgot so is 400D technology also similiar to 30D , Entry level is still entry level Midrange is still midrange ,we can see it from the Continuos Shoot also (5FPS for midrange ,3FPS for entry) remember entry is still entry ,Nikon using 11 AF point while Canon is 9 AF point ,this doesnt made Nikon entry better then Canon midrange ,from the continuos shoot we can see it ? And I wouldnt believe if D80 will be as fast as D200 ,because NIKON is not stupid ,if its the same ,no one will buy their midrange but all go for D80 , entry is still entry ,midrange is still midrange (from the Continuos shoot FPS we knw Nikon will purposely limit the entry no matter how) Nikon D80(body only) US999 , (18-135) US1299 Canon 400D (body only) US799 , (18-55) US899 Sony @100 (body only) US899 ,(18-70) US999 This is US SRP for 3 10 megapixel entry DSLR. another cannot compete is the 3d matrix sensor |

Canon's entry level SLRs have three numbers in them (i.e. 700, 350D, 400D). Their semi- pro range have two numbers in them (i.e. 20D, 30D, 50). sure the classes are different but what we are seeing here is the trickling down of midrange dslr functions down to entry level dslr, eventhough some of the specs might be a step down of those in the midrange dslr.

Guys, lets just say that the 400D is out of my budget and I've narrowed it down to 2 models. 350D and Sony a100. Which would be a better buy? I just want an all rounder. If the a100 doesn't suck at high ISOs, it would be a no brainer right?
BTW, how much is the 350D now? The a100 is selling for RM 3099 with the lens kit. Thx in advance! |

Hmm.. i'll go check out the 350D price one day. But its kinda hard to buy a camera when u know there's already a successor to it. |

If I were you folks, exercise patience lah!. when newly released, ain't that farnie problems of stock availability and stiff prices, LCLY dealers making shopper's life difficult are bound to occur. Wait till market stabilize in few months, better discounts and maybe they'll bundle extras during seasonal and year end promo's.

The IS version would cost about RM1000-RM2000 more depending on the make, L lens construction or non-L lens construction.Blurring at maximum focal length is actually not a lens problem, it's a user problem, let me explain. The way the user hold the lens is very important. At 300mm for a non-IS or non-internal focusing lenses, hold as far as poosible at the lens barrel to assist stability and keep the camera as close to your body as possible. In all cases, do not hold the lens at the focussing ring coz at AF, the barrel will be distrupted when the camera is trying to achieve focus. |

Err..guys, I was at Sunway Pyramid and the 350D price is RM3K. Includes Lens kit, 1Gb SD and a tripod. Is the price ok? I think i'll go for the 350D instead of the a100. I can't swallow the high noise at high ISO.. besides I don't think there's much difference between 8 and 10MP.
What do u sifus think? Any opinions? Thx! |

While you can forget about the issue about high iso noise and additional 2mp, the improved AF borrowed from the 30D might be worth it.
As quoted from dpreview: QUOTE One criticism of the EOS 300D/350D was auto-focus, Canon has decided to bite the bullet and simply installed the considerably better nine point AF sensor from the EOS 30D in the EOS 400D. This affords both faster, more accurate focusing as well as center point AF which is compatible with F2.8 lenses. I have been playing with a 30D a couple of days ago and the 50mm f/1.8 + larger viewfinder made it a breeze to focus, compose and shoot. The AF was much responsive compared to my D70s + 50mm f/1.8 so i think the AF does makes a difference in shooting. Now i'm even more gatal for D80.. unexpectedly poisoned myself thru a canon. Geez.... |

It is also worth it even if you decided to pay by credit card and the extra 2% for it. What do u sifus think? Any opinions? Thx! Nonetheless, get ready to be supplied with a dunno-what brand of card and tripod. Heck, even if they supply you that, just keep those as spare and buy better ones for everyday use-lor. Dun worry about the noise, I am yet to see a digital camera without a 'problem' of noise. What kind of noise do you expect to see at 3R to 8R on a 8MP or 10MP? QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Sep 6 2006, 10:01 AM) The 400D comes with the EF-S 18-55mm F3.5, similiar one found with the 300D, 350D as well as the 30D if you're getting the Kit package. It was mentioned elsewhere that a Body-only package is also available, dunno how true, but I would advice newbies to take up the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens. This post has been edited by ac98: Sep 6 2006, 10:56 AM |

Actually, if the 400D is in fact RM 3.6K, I'm definitely spending the extra RM 600 to get it. I like the bigger LCD display.

Nice try as well ... but actually I am not directing the poison at you. I know you're a Nikoner for good.
I am trying to target those poor souls out there who're still deciding whether to dump their 6MP D70/D70s to change over to the new 10MP Canon EOS 400D or not. I am sure there're many out there based on my observation during 2006 KLIMS and the 2006 Japan GT at Sepang. "It's cheap-mah, buy lor!" is the answer I always get when I ask "Why Nikon D70?" Canon made the next turn after Nikon this time in terms of releasing the EOS 400D simply becoz they (Canon) wanna be in the midst of the '10MP hype' that Nikon created days ago and it felt really good to see 1st hand all the photo enthusiates whacking up the units, some without even thinking. Those who started with the D50 and then got poisoned and strayed into the D70s should be too tired to invest by now, driven only by pure enthusiasm and have not gained any experience in shooting. The D80 is going to be just another heartache. Good news, nonetheless, to the D70s users, who are ever more willing to dump their units for the D80, but I suggest you keep your D70/D70s as a second unit. By the time the D80 is out, your D70/D70s is worth next to nothing. Most of the Canon EOS 350D user I met recently said "Bang head lar ... 350D 0% interest haven't finish serving the 400D come already! Ayoooo..." If you're one of those, consider yourself lucky. This time round, you have plenty of time to get yourself a 2nd camera body should Canon Malaysia decides to introduce the body-only package later! I made mention about this to the Canon folks months back and they said it won't happen to the 350D ... lil' that I know they did it with the 400D. On the other hand, the 10MP hype was also prominent in the point-and-shoot segment, but I bet the consumers would've gone "Nah ... why do I need a 10MP for? Not going to print a poster what!" So ... they decided for themselves. |

But anyway, i feel that it's the same thing in the nikon and canon camp this time around. They are both targeting at the market segment created by Sony A100. What the 400D is to 350D is the same as D80 to D70s. My 2 cents is that if you have not outgrown your old camera there is really no need for a new one. If you need a second body to work with, the new body should be a nice candidate. Cheers |

QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Sep 6 2006, 05:15 PM) No point selling the D50 when the D80 is already out. Let me explain :Those who are still looking for a cheaper entry level Nikon camera won't go for 6MP models anymore. It would be a smarter investment to move up to the 10MP notch straightaway looking at the other major players coming up with models of the same MPs. Looking at this, retailers won't risk not able to sell the units or making a chicken feet profit out of selling them. It won't make sense as well. Doing so, it will give an impression to the potential customers that the model is 'obsolete'. |

But you're forgetting that the D80 comes with me too- D200 large viewfinder - 11-area AF system (new version of Multi-CAM 1000, similar to D200) - Improved high ISO (based on what i've seen) - In camera tweaking (D-lighting, image overlay, multiple exposures, color modes) - Upgraded wireless flash support (CLS) - Manual kelvin temperature Must counter poison... lol. I'm sticking to the dark side thank you already placed order for the dark side anti dust - not really a plus 11-area AF D lighting superior flash technology |

QUOTE(ac98 @ Sep 6 2006, 02:24 PM) I am trying to target those poor souls out there who're still deciding whether to dump their 6MP D70/D70s to change over to the new 10MP Canon EOS 400D or not. I don't understand why do most of you (those already having D70/s,300/350D) have to upgrade to their replacement models. Although they have been upgraded, it most probably won't better your photo-taking skills at all even if you get the upgrades. I've seen P&S cameras being used to take amazing photos and even more so with D70/s,300/350Ds. They're already very good cameras in their own right. Do you really need those upgraded features? |

Hi guyz, i want to ask some technical question about DSLR.
Why DSLR now go for CMOS sensor rather than CCD? We all know that CCD is better. Is it CMOS cost chepaer and improving? |

For all of you that have dismisses the Sony-A100 because of the noise at high ISO.....I would have thought that the anti-shake system which enable you to shoot abt 2 stops lower would more than make up for it?

I agree with you on this but since you're quoting ME ...People upgrade for a few reasons. Firstly, they cannot wait to beat one another in the 'I gotta get it before you all' bandwagon. Secondly, there are a lot of 'I got money so what' people out there. Thirdly, people who have been so-called waiting for the 'best' DSLR finally gives it up and go get one. Lastly, people who already hit a wall with their own hardware (either compact cam or SLR) and decide to move on to a better tool. Malaysian camera buyers fall into at least ONE of the reasons I stated above, me inclusive. I dun deny the fact that anyone can be good with the tools they use, not only a camera, can be anything you use, but there are always advantages in moving into the latest technology because they give you a better edge and you move faster, more convenient and definitely improve in delivering results. More than a decade ago, no one even believe that you can take photos and videos of your children and show on the TV immediately after that. You can do it now with a RM699 camera. Did I mention that you can do the same with your phone to? P/S : Why need to save up and go for a semi-pro? Go straight up to PRO-mah, hahahaha ... * poison poison also * |

QUOTE(noonian @ Sep 8 2006, 02:28 PM) i'm interested in getting my first DSLR. For the price difference, if I would be going for better megapixels (better quality) and bigger LCD screen (clearer preview), the EOS 400D is definitely a better investment compared to its previous model. You've got nothing to loose.Torn between 350D and the 400D. 350D because the price has dropped significantly with the 400D coming out. do u guys think 400D is worth the investment? Put it this way, the price of the 350D will go down even FURTHER after you purchase ... as long as it's still in the market, people will still sell it at a price. And if price is really a major concern, wait some more.
Owners of 350D will be selling their used units for much cheaper than what the stores are selling. Used la, but cheap cheap. |

a 70-200 or 70-300 telephoto will be good enough. of course the version which is within the RM 600 range lah.
if possible, go for the canon instead of the 3rd parties |

QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Sep 11 2006, 09:29 AM) notice the Canon LCD is always on when using The EOS 400D's LCD will switch off the moment you hold up the camera body to your face. I find Alpha's auto rotate function rather useless, the moment you hold up the cam for shooting you won't look at the LCD already, rotate or not does not matter. The fonts also another thing, biggie and huge like Olympus E-series ones. They compensate having not much to display with huge fonts.sames goes as alpha will it consumes more battery for that? as for coolness alpha LCD screen will rotate depends on how u hold hte camera vertically and horizontally darn i forgot to check 400d whether can do the same or not The 400D has more to display at any time than Alpha, Nikon and Olympus. The professional photographer always wanna spend more time seeing what he is shooting and all the relevent details of his shots than scrolling thru menus and pressing buttons. |

QUOTE(clemong_888 @ Sep 13 2006, 03:51 AM) Canon Malaysia kept the prices of the grip all time high since the debut of the 350D, which I already suspected that the NEXT model would definitely benefit from. The retail price of the battery grip is going anywhere between RM650 - RM899 depending on WHO and WHERE you bought it and under what terms (Cash/Credit card).I suggest to those who are getting the 400D full package (Body + Kit Lens + Grip) to bargain as much as possible and dun try be a smart-allect asking for the price of body, then the price of lens and finally the price of the battery grip ... you will be thrown a total price so low you'll be too embarassed to walk away from the shop without paying for the 'free' stuff you're entitled to originally i.e CF card, camera bag or tripod. THeres a CANON Fans thread already. Just converge there and share experiences and future meets lor.
Im not 100% sure about the specs for the 30D, But If I want to upgrade to a DLSR ,either the 400D or the 30D, what are the differences? And pros of having the more expensive 30D? |

QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Sep 13 2006, 09:43 PM) Mmm ... for your info, Canon's Body Only package for the EOS 400D might be coming to Malaysia soon when the Full Package is smooth selling. Reason why they're not coming ashore so soon is becoz Canon Malaysia might wanna cater for the first timer DSLR users (of course) and to let retailer make more profit out of new stocks. For those who are new to DSLRs ... you WILL need the EF-S18-55mm kit lens trust me, it's a very good lens. I got myself some very nice sweeping sceneries of seasides, the sky, sunsets, as well as some very good portraits. Frequent travellers will find this lens very useful as it is lightweight and the F3.5 is more than enough to cater for indoor photography as well as wide angle coverage for the outdoors. |

Guys, need u'r help. Tell me if this is normal.
If I hold my 400D and shake it "lightly" I can hear a slight rattle. I know the sound is confined to the body because the rattle is there even after i removed the lens. Is this normal? Thanks! Edit : I found out where the noise comes from.. its from the built-in flash. If its lifted up, the sound disappears. Some thing must be lose. welwitchia, the 400D you bought at 'Boeing', is it a gray market one/AP one? Is the warranty with Canon itself or with the shop/some other arrangement?

Yes. i bought it at Boeing. I really don't know if its AP/ori. I thought these things applies to handphones only.
As for a review, i think u better read those online. I'm still a noob. ok, see if u guys can answer this one for me. Lets say I'm sitting in my room @ night and I take a picture with Full Auto and one with Aperture Priority mode, ISO 800 (both taken with flash). The Auto shot takes it at 1/50, ISO 400 while the Aperture Priority shot takes it at 0.8secs (yes, the flash did fire). Thats strange right? Can anyone explain this to me? Thx! |

Mind telling what Aperture value you set when you are using Aperture Priority?
Full Auto will set the Aperture value by itself but you can set the Aperture value manually in Aperture Priority. Aperture value will affect your shutter speed. The bigger the Aperture number under low light condition, you will achieve what you stated there - 0.8 seconds shutter speed. You should twist down the Aperture value as small as possible to achieve faster shutter speed. |

Dun wanna confuse here, but let you answer your own question :Thanks! At ISO800 and Av Mode, you're twice as high the light sensitivity as in the Auto Mode, right? So at 0.8sec the camera actually needed at least 50 times as slow a shutter speed to achieve the correct exposure. That means ... assuming you didn't shift away from where you sat, the camera actually chose a darker side to focus in Av Mode and thus achieved that exposure setting. The camera actually chose ANOTHER way to achieve focus, that's all. |

It's has nothing to do if it's 350D or 400D or any SLR for that matter, it's how they seek out brighter sections to focus.Sometimes we really dunno how a camera thinks ... but it's always true that they have a 'mind of their own' |

Aiyo, why would u wanna look at my pictures? They would probably do the 400D a disjustice, no joke man. (My hands are kinda "shakey" lately, need to get more sleep). If u wanna look at them, I did post some photos at http://welwitchia.multiply.com . They're all resized anyways and most the pics there are taken with my handphone.

i just got myself a 400D, on the very same night, my Auto Dust Cleaning System is spoiled, I discovered it by turning it off holding the shutter button partially, then I can use the camera perfectly
When I try to clean from Menu, Clean Now function, it displays the infamous Error 99 of Canon DSLR I turned the auto dust cleansing from menu when it's being switched on or off, then my camera turns on perfectly.. or else i will always get error 99 when i switched on because once it's being switched on, the dust cleansing is activated.. sigh! |

^ So if u bring back to the shop..are u getting a 1 to 1 replacement or its going to the factory for warranty? The latter definitely sucks.. I remember buying an Asus PDA that came with a faulty battery and they told me it had to go back to Penang for repairs. After wasting 3 hrs and giving them a piece of my mind, i had a replacement. In Malaysia, we consumers are treated like dirt.

Be patient with the rectification, it's just a factory defect and will be solved just like the warranty agreement mentioned.Aren't you glad you bought a Malaysian set and not a 'AP' set? |

hmmmmm well according to the guy, it's a known issue by Canon and this defect is also present in all the 400D he sold so far..
It will be in the next firmware upgrade so I am fine =D By the way, when I reached there, I didn't tell him what was wrong but he switched the auto dust cleaning system automatically for me in order to make the camera work. That's what I did too yesterday to make the camera work so he knew what was wrong all while. Please be informed that some EOS 400Ds out there have bad firmware for now. However the dust cleansing system is not needed so much because I won't be changing lens for now.. =D |

Hmm ... I won't deny that for now, but having put so many options under the cleaning function, there will be potential problems. Like you said, the next firmware might solve it, alongside some other potential drawbacks.

QUOTE(welwitchia @ Sep 29 2006, 03:34 PM) ok..ask u one question..where are good places to buy lens? Yes, they can be used on potraits properly but I dun recommend landscapes or anything that require infinity focussing. Also, if the lens says MACRO, will it fare well on taking normal pics? e.g Landscapes? Shooting portraits will render the results ultra-sharp (that is more than SUPER sharp) creating highlights to skin texture, colour and dress material, in the case of fashion photography. I have not tried using a Macro lens on landscapes coz technically, I felt that it's just not right ... dunno. This post has been edited by ac98: Sep 29 2006, 03:51 PM |

Sometimes all you need to do is open your mouth and ask, those people are smart. Those people who are stupid are those that ask again ... and again ... and again ... and again ... and again ... the same damn question and never gets it!! Back to your question ... No no ... an 'All Rounder' lens should be a lightweight zoom lens, preferable a wide angle zoom to cover most of your shooting needs i.e wide angle, close-up to mild telephoto. I dunno about your budget, but I tend to get the 17-40mm F4L in replacement of the Kit Lens that's supposed to come with the camera when I change over to a EOS 30D (Yeah, just take away one zero from my 300D and pay so much extra). |

QUOTE(welwitchia @ Sep 29 2006, 03:55 PM) So for an all rounder lens, can i say the best bet is a prime lens? Forgot to explain to you also ... Prime lenses are lenses with Fixed Focal lens, here are my favorites (some others are simply out of my reach for the time being) :1. EF 50mm F1.4 - A very decent potrait lens you can use indoors or outdoors. 2. EF 100mm F2 - Wanna give some oomph to your stage photos? This is the one I am considering. 3. EF 300mm F4L IS - How can I exclude this one?! A kickass huge bugger, with IS! This post has been edited by ac98: Sep 29 2006, 04:23 PM |

I have been reading countless lens reviews for the past 2 days. At first, I was set at getting the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS, but after reading more, it doesn't seem to be a good upgrade at all...so I read summore
So there u go.. think I'll start saving now. L lens it is. |

Answering your Question here welwitchia ...
Choosing your lenses can be entirely subjective especially if you have a budget or if you have your own reasons for doing so. I personally would want all my lenses to be L-lenses due to performance, build and quality issues and I would want nothing less. I will choose the Canon EF 17-40mm F4L primarily becoz it's an L-lens, it's weather sealed and its build quality. For RM400 difference I won't wanna argue! Oh another thing ... the 17-40mm comes with pouch and hood, 17-85mm tarak! |

Ok sifus, I read that the 30D has a 100,000-cycle shutter. Does this measure how many pics the 30D can take before it "kongs" and needs servicing?

Absolutely correct, but I think it should kong off before 100,000 Documented shutter life is never accurate. The 300D kong-ed slightly after 11,000 when documentation said it can last about 20,000 (if I am not mistaken?). My friend's 1st batch D70 kong-ed after 2000+ |

my previous d50 had 30613 shutter counts... and counting
so for a 30d's 100,000 shutter count is still believable |

QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Oct 6 2006, 02:40 PM) how to know when the shutter is broken? Liver starts to fail, lungs start to fail, breathing difficulties, and it will die JUST when you're about to shoot some girls in BIKINI. |
