red sparrow is a pretty good spy thriller, set in the cold war era.

stars jennifer lawrence, joel edgerton, jeremy irons.

lawrence is said to have been paid $20 million for this movie.

the ending was a bit of a clever surprise twist. 3/5.

Lean on Pete (2017)
Director: Andrew Haigh
Writers: Andrew Haigh, Willy Vlautin.
Stars: Charlie Plummer( All the Money in the World )
Amy Seimetz, Travis Fimmel

Adapted from the 2010 novel by Willy Vlautin.
15-year-old Charley(Charlie Plummer) a teenager living in
Portland with his jobless father Ray (Travis Fimmel). His father
had a succession of girlfriends. His mother left years before.

Horse trainer (Steve Buscemi) who initially gives Charley a job
whom he later steal, Lean on Pete whose name lends the film its title.

After the sudden death of his father, Charley with the horse pick
their way on the journey of more than a 1,000 miles to Wyoming, where
he believes his aunt (Alison Elliott) lives.

Over the course of the journey, he encounters several people
on whom he rely on for help.
The movie is a deeply sad tale about the search for "family".
It doesn’t just mean the people who take care of you.
They are those whom we yearn to care for, whom we
cherish if we can.

A standout performance from Charlie Plummer.

fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian movie based on a 1953 novel.

starring michael jordan and micheal shannon.

not the best syfy thriller, it is more of a syfy drama, little action.

it reminds me of equilibrium 2002 (christian bale, sean bean).

if u liked equilibrium, u probably want to watch fahrenheit 451. 2.5/5.

shuttle life 2017 is a malaysian drama film.

yes, filmed in pudu, kl.

a story about a poor family struck by a tragedy, the film highlights the hard realities of the poor in the urban sprawl.

this film won many awards in asian film festivals for young talent.

stars jack tan, sylvia chang (taiwanese veteran actress).

the ending is a bit of a let down but i suppose it is meant to leave the viewers to spare a thought for the hard lives of some.

pure drama but never a dull moment; u can immediately connect with some of the issues raised in the movie. 3.5/5.

In Darkness (May 2018)
Director: Anthony Byrne
Writers: Anthony Byrne, Natalie Dormer
Stars: Natalie Dormer, Emily Ratajkowski, Ed Skrein

Sofia (Natalie Dormer)blind since childhood and living independently in London.
An accomplished pianist playing for orchestral film scores.
Sofia has a friendly but casual relationship with her beautiful
upstairs neighbor Veronique (Emily Ratajkowski)
Her upstairs neighbor and her only "friend" and occasionally
exchanges a few words. Sofia agrees to perform for Veronique's
father(Jan Bijvoet)

One day, she becomes a witness to a suspicious death when
Veronique is flung to her death from an upstairs window after a
struggle with her boyfriend, Marc (Ed Skrein).
Media coverage reveals that Veronique’s father is a
Bosnian businessman on the verge of being busted for war crimes.

Sofia investigating her dead neighbor's father and as it becomes
clearer there's more to Sofia and her connection to this murder.

Too bad the story loses focus and its protagonist’s point of view.
I think the movie bites off more than it can chew.
Overall Dormer's talent and charisma are evident every time she's on screen.
She makes the most of it.

What a coincidence, just watched it yesterday via streaming on U9.
Not bad for a 1080p compressed streaming.

while waiting for the better versions of pacific rim uprising and tomb raider, here's one to kill a couple of hours.

hurricane heist - that's what it is - a heist in a hurricane.

the story is pretty much a diehard mould but has some exciting special effects on the hurricane.

the cast is almost unknown, just satisfactory performance.

a box office bomb... but watchable, 2.5/5.

tomb raider 2018 is a reboot of the 2001 lara croft: tomb raider.

i was a little disappointed with it, thought the 2001 version was better.

while it has its good action moments, it hasn't got the wow factor.

the main character is athletic but somehow fails to deliver the "superherione" you might be looking for.

maybe the villain in the show is not much of one.

stars alicia vikander, daniel woo. 2.5/5.

Mary Shelley(2018)
Director-Haifaa Al-Mansour( 2013-Wadjda)
Stars-Elle Fanning, Douglas Booth.

Mary Shelley (Elle Fanning) as the author of the title. She was only 18
when she famously wrote and published the novel "Frankenstein".
The film opens with Mary scribbling in her journal while sitting
atop the grave of her mother Mary Wollstonecraft(who died after she was born)

Living in cramped quarters ruled by her stepmother (Joanne Froggatt),
her bookseller father, William Godwin(Stephen Dillane), and a pair of siblings.
Mary’s real passion is writing but her father dismisses her work.
But after too many fights with her disapproving stepmother, Godwin sends Mary to
live with family friend’s home in Scotland. Just to get her away from his second wife.

There she meets the young poet, Percy Shelley(Douglas Booth)a man already five years
her senior. Mary later discovers that Percy is actually married with kids.
Her obsession with Percy consumes her to a breaking point.

Percy like so many men was a charming self-centered who believed in
free love while Mary like so many women was a one man woman.

Dispossessed by her father, pregnant, and penniless. Once landed at
Byron’s Lake Geneva house, where Mary finally gave into her desire
to write “Frankenstein.

Despite some weaknesses in the story, Elle Fanning achieves a lot.
The film is beautiful and richly designed.
