Based on a true story.
The film opens with a teenager gazing up at a massive statue
of Marilyn Monroe with its famous exposed undergarments in
white high heeled sandals.
The statue is a symptom of a corrupt and sexist society.
She is Mia(Vicky Chen) an undocumented migrant, works as a cleaner
at a small motel in a seaside resort on the island province of Hainan.
Sometimes she covers the reception desk for her colleague,
Lily (Peng Jing) who was out with her boyfriend that night.
On one such night, she checks-in a middle-aged man (Cao Yunqing)
who turns out to be a low-level police commissioner with two
schoolgirls Wen (Zhou Meijun) and Xin (Jiang Xinyue). They check into
While manning the surveillance cameras, she watches him forced his way
into their room, over their objections.
And she takes a recording of the screen, capturing the moment through
her cell phone.
When both parents discover what took place and bring them
to a clinic where an examination reveals that they have been raped.
Outside the clinic room, one of the two 12-year-old victims tells her
that their hymen has been broken, she asks, “What’s a hymen?”
A local attorney (Shi Ke), who specializes in pursuing child traffickers,
is assigned to the case. And she is the only character who might be able
to bring the police chief to justice.
A powerful performance from Vicky Chen and Zhou.
The director cast on a society where the only thing worse than being
poor is being female.
