Hi Guys,

Pretty new here to this topic.
Never really took an understanding on ATF and Engine oil until i think i was overcharged for services on changing these two oils.
I owned a honda city '06 (+/- 11years with a clocked in mileage of about 223000km.
For Engine Oil i was convinced to switched to Addinol Semi Syn 1040 on my previous service (cost me RM180, which i think overcharged).
My next oil change is coming up - for both ATF and Engine Oil - so i want to cultivate some understanding and asked for recommendations on good ATF and engine oil protection for my car (11yo with 223,000km clocked in).

Thank you.

Anyone use shell helix ultra PurePlus and find it turn brown easily?

Did oil change on my car the oil turn into light brown from golden in just 30 mins drive.

Not sure if it is because it has superb cleaning power or it gets "fried" easily.

Guys, I still have some engine oil left from oil change during last 2 times of maintenance, I wonder if it is compatible to top up with my current engine oil that I'm using during last maintenance as both are different brands but I'm not sure about the grade though ? Will there be any effect ?

ATF, just used the std Honda ATF for your specific car, should be good enough already. Just need to find where selling the cheapest/most reasonable price.
For engine oil, can go to Tesco/AEON and find which ever on good promotion price there, that will save you a lot. Any semi synth 10w40 should be good enough from whatever reputable brands like Mobil, Total, Castrol Elf, even Mitsubishi Eneos oil from AEON. Should cost you around rm90/4ltr if on promotion price.

Can mix, should still be ok if good/reputable oil.

Guys, I bought Shell Helix HX5, wondering whether it's original.
I see they put another sticker on top at behind of the bottle. Looks suspicious hmm.gif

Yes, it is genuine. If you're concerned, you can drop in any Shell petrol station to check on their oil bottle caps.

recently many articles shown that cooking oil made of palm oil can be used as good as engine oil that cost >10x.

found from Autoworld:

QUOTE
Fully synthetic TOTAL QUARTZ 9000 SM 5W40 flash point is 230C
100% mineral oil flashpoint is 302C
100% palm oil flashpoint is 304C

TOTAL QUARTZ viscosity at 40C is 87.28mm2/sec
100% mineral oil is 503.4mm2/sec
100% palm oil is 42.6mm2/sec

TOTAL QUARTZ viscosity at 100C is 14.22mm2/sec
100% mineral oil is 32.51mm2/sec
100% palm oil is 8.65mm2/sec

TOTAL Quartz viscosity index is 169
100% mineral oil is 96.15
100% palm oil is 187

QUOTE
compared to Total Quartz fully-syn oil, pure palm oil (with no additives) has a higher flash point, lower viscosity both at 40 & 100 degree Celsius (I think it's similar to a 0W-20 grade oil) & higher viscosity index (more stable), so palm oil is indeed more superior to some fully-syn oil in some aspects! But we won't know how it will be after additives are added.

i guess that's what they put in the cheap brands making 10x margin.

organic > synthetic

any review for Saji brand? haha

Boiling point is just but 1 parameter only.

To produce a good quality engine oil, the blender needs multiple and balanced formulation of additives, acidity regulators, dispersent, defoamers, viscosity index improvers, etc. Additives cost money and the process to reach to certain parameters needs money. Even if you buy a pre-blend, that still costs money as someone else did the dirty job.

Yes, plam oil can also be considered as a good potential for base oil, but it has been in market for so long, still no palm oil based engine oils? Something must be missing the mark right?

I own a 2011 city. I usually buy my own engine oil and atf separately from an auto parts shop and bring it to the workshop. I get the semi 5-30w for rm80 while atf is about rm25 I think. I'll need about 3-4 bottle of atf per change. Oil filter is rm15. All before gst.

Labour is only rm15 per oil type change. Done together is rm25.

I live in setapak. Auto shop is in setapak. All products are the same that honda sc use.

Goodidea. Hopefully the auto shop can guarantee its products is 100% original.
There are plenty of fake or recycled engine oil outside.

Some ways to prevent it is by buying it at sc (expensive since some using retail price) or buy at tesco during offer. Get mine at tesco shell fully Synthetic 5w-40 at 129rm. Last time also bought mitsubishi fully Synthetic 5w-40 at jusco balakong, clearance sales at rm99

After going through the Mb 229.3 and Mb 229.5 list, I found out the cheapest oils which meet these requirements which can easily be found in Malaysia.

For MB 229.3, it would be the Caltex Havoline Formula, Caltex Havoline Synthetic Blend (RM 95-110), and Shell Helix HX7(RM 101-135).

Interestingly, Caltex Havoline Formula is non-synthetic dino oil. However, there have been some not so positive reviews regarding the Havoline engine oils. Do your due diligence first.

For MB 229.5, it really depends on what’s on sale. Currently, Castrol Stop Start Fully Syn 5w30 is going for RM 150 on gemfive.com. (Do note that in Germany where labelling laws are tighter, this Magnatec is not labelled as a full synthetic, but rather as a hydrocracked synthetic)

I was mainly looking through the major brands in those MB specs sheets. Please do let me know if I have missed any.

Maybe you can experiment by using the palm oil into your engine then tell us the result? brows.gif

Done that.

QUOTE
4. Conclusion

The formulated blends of palm oil show similar properties compared to commercial SAE 20W40 oil in terms of mechanical efficiency, brake thermal efficiency, and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC). The engine performance and fuel consumption for both lubricants showed no appreciable difference either. The study revealed that by using blends of 25% palm oil the  emission levels are reduced as compared to mineral oil. Also the palm oil-based lubricant is derived from a renewable and lower carbon source; this blended formulation could potentially be considered a good alternative to mineral oil-based lubricants. Since the cost of palm oil based lubricating oil is much lower than the SAE 20W40 mineral oil, the palm oil provides more potential for the successful utilization as base for lubricant oil.
