Just wondering if anyone can suggest a very cheap mineral engine oil which can be obtain over the counter and does not "burn off" easily?

Just wanted to test it on a car before I send it for engine transplant. The engine can't really hold engine oil while no leaking is found.

What SAE Viscosity are you looking for?
What engine are you referring to?
*
Thanks for assisting.

Any SAE viscosity is fine for me, be it 30, 40, or 50. As long as it is cheap, easy of obtain, and proven does works well on car which suffer from great amount of engine oil lost, say 500ml every 1000km. I just want to run a short test before spending the money for major repair.

It is a vios ncp42 engine BTW.

You may try either Petronas Mach5 SM 20w50 or Shell Helix HX3 20w50. Please be advised that your car may suffer severe fuel consumption due to oil drag.
*
Alright thanks you very much for the suggestion. Yeah I do expect severe fuel consumption by using cheap thick oil.

I was trying to decide whether to send the car for engine transplant to japan imported yaris engine. Would cost me RM3500 for the engine transplant including changing seal and gasket. If I could confirm it just sensitive to certain engine oil, then I might as well keep the engine and do more trial and error.

Usually top overhaul would solve problem like yours. Engine transplant cost far too much.
*
Yeah I have yet to decide what to do next indeed. The car was suffering from overheating earlier due to human careless and stupidness. No unusual smoke, no leakage, but still losing a big amount of engine oil after the overheating happened. Got the valve cover gasket changed though.

I went to first Chinese mechanic, he checked and suggest for overhaul. Went to second Chinese mechanic suggest for engine transplant coz cheaper. Went to third Malay mechanic suggest it's sensitive to certain engine oil, if persist do top overhaul like you said.

Now I'm confuse even more.

So the engine oil turns dark in quick manner because of it is cooked due to low quality base oil? Or it is due to the detergent content in the engine oil?

Yes and no.
It could be due to premature oxidation of base oil, or sludge/varnish in suspension.
*
Erm.. Should I say if the oil started to turn light brown from golden color in just less than 500km in a new and well maintained engine, it is then due to the lesser quality engine oil.

And an engine oil which only started to turn light brown after 1000km on an old engine is consider an good engine oil.

Can suggest what is the oil change interval in km with oil at following spec?

1)
TBN HCLO4 (mgKOH/g): 8.08
Noack Test @ 250 oC, 1Hr wt%:10.5 (Max-15.0 wt%)

2)
TBN HCLO4 (mgKOH/g): 7.04
Noack Test 250 oC. 1Hr @ wt%: 12.7

TBN and NOACK figure can't tell how many km  you can go.
Mind to disclose the names of option1 and 2?
*
Sure. I was hiding the name and viscosity to avoid stereotype.

Here it is.
1)IDEMITSU semi synthetic 5w30
TBN HCLO4 (mgKOH/g): 8.08
Noack Test @ 250 oC, 1Hr wt%:10.5 (Max-15.0 wt%)

2)IDEMITSU mineral oil 10w30
TBN HCLO4 (mgKOH/g): 7.04
Noack Test 250 oC. 1Hr @ wt%: 12.7

The mineral oil TBN does not seems too bad consider it is a cheap mineral oil at with 7 TBN. I read that the well known eneos semi synthetic has only 7.5 TBN.

Engine oil when subject to thermal/mechanical stress can produce acidic byproduct, which in turn compensate the BASE NUMBER of itself, therefore, a high TBN EO could be a crappy EO as well if the base oil is of inferior quality.
*
guess nothing much can be obtained by reading the specification sheet as oil company won't reveal the mixture of the proportional of the base oil they used. The only way is just follow the normal practice where oil change within recommended which is 5k, 7k, and 10k km then.

Can anyone suggest an engine oil which is at sae30 where cost around rm130 or below and allow oil change interval of 10k km or above.

Otherwise, something at sae 30 which cost rm90 or below with 8k km oil change interval would be nice too.

Duron-E 10W30 (API SM/CJ-4) premium mineral heavy duty engine oil, easily handle OCI 10k km. Price for 4L is nearby your budget.
*
Wow thanks a lot. This one looks rare for me. Any hint where should I get this?

BTW, some seller are recommending oci of 8000km for Formula Shell Fully Synthetic 5W30 API SN. I thought those oil are actually good to last until 10k km?

Will pm you seller details.
Formula Shell FS 5W30, for me I will whack it at least 12k haha. 8k is at the conservative side, they are not wrong either.
*
Yeah you got the key word, conservative. I guess most modern good branded synthetic oil would be able to handle at least 10k km easily if at least not under severe condition. Even the perodua semi synthetic gold bottle allow 10k km oil change interval as well. Not sure how would they get so confident with it though.

Honda lagi hebat...they also give you option for mineral oil for 10k km oil change and still under warranty  biggrin.gif

Additives and oil blending methods/technology has been improving for the benefit of our wallets.
*
Yes that remind me it happens since more than 10 years ago when I was driving the city 2005 FL. I remember I do have the option to go for mineral or semi synthetic at the same oci in the kerinchi honda service center.

yes, it is fully synthetic.

I believe incredibless is asking if the engine oil is PAO and Ester blend.

I read somewhere Mobil 1 Extended Performance is heavily hydrocracked base oil, be it group 3 or 3+. PAO does not mix well with additive that's why group 3 is used.

what do you guys do to those leftover engine oils. mix all up and reuse it??I get a lot of it
*
I mix up those leftover engine oil. Be it SAE40 or 30, mineral or synthetic, and any API grade. Engine top is still shinning clean after 180k km mileage with such abuse.

haha I intend to also, I have semi of 5w30 10w30 and also mineral of 10w40, I wonder can I mix up and use up one shot, just change earlier only. Any articles can read on this ah. Ill just use it and change earlier lo, maybe half of my usual interval Ill change d. I mean Im sure it is still better than running on good quality oil but 6 months in the car already right
*
Well I use the "home blend oil" like mineral oil where oil change at 5000km knowing that it should be better than mineral oil since it has synthetic oil mixed, making it semi synthetic. Hehe.

So after being use Tesco Full Syn in my BLM.
Not so sure about how to interpret those metal particles.
To me some just a seem a bit to big.

I thought such a big metal particles should be stuck at oil filter?

I think these didn't get pass by the oil strainer.
So it drop into the oil pan instead.

Anyway I don't think it is the tesco engine oil lead to those big metal. It could be from the crush nut or bearing.
