All sifu here can advise me the detail of this 2 model, I am thinking of upgrade my existing Unifi router.

Asus RT-N56U
TP-Link WDR4300

- My preference is want to have longer range WIFI coverage
- Router location at 2nd floor (I stay at 2 storey house), hope can get full house coverage.
- Using Unifi 5MB package.
*
i will also suggest u go for asus.

rt n56u has dual band, good choice if yr place is crowded with other wifi users, congestion, so can go 5ghz instead of usual 2.4.
strictly for stronger n longer range wifi, rt n12hp or 14uhp with just 2.4ghz may be a better choice, and cheaper.
my n12hp is good enough for 2 storey house, from one corner to another.
n14uhp probably good for 3 storeys!

I have replaced the RG4332 with an ASUS RT-N12 D1 wireless router.

Everything is now fast and stable. Look at the ping. You can't go lower than that.  rclxms.gif

anyone received a notice from TM saying that they will be revising the payment cycle?
TM will be changing the bill cycle from 30 days to 21 days. . which means that there is roughly 30% of price hike?
*
this is not price hike, this is improving cashflow. a nice thing to hv in biz.

if a biz can do it without customers running away to competition, very gud since customers like longer credit period.

actually unifi already charge in advance for the month, now they want payment by 21 days, so, can't pay at >21st day of usage or kena interest charge or disconnect, i suppose.

which means the boss or fin people think it's time they become mcd or kopitiam biz - cash, no hutang.

at the worst, unifi wants cash upfront or deposit or prepayment - they hutang u - that's a nice biz.

a reflection of monoploy biz characteristic or our economy is dem gud, lots of cash in people's pockets. tongue.gif

How to get the Unifi RM179 10mb promo...some of my friends got the call oledi....but I never get....so I gave 1300 a call, they say my name not in the list...

Is there another way?

thx in advance
*
to get rm179 (some say rm169) vip10, i think:

.. only during their promo periods, incl their agents
.. only for vip5 to upgrade, initial 2 yr contract complete
.. rm179 deal comes w/o any of the hypptv packs, only the few lousy foc channels
.. upgraders can get hypptv megapack if pay rm199
.. new deal no new router, no new hypptv box

.. existing vip10 won't get price lower than rm199 but possible to negotiate to get foc hypptv packs; option to change to maxis or others always there

not 100% sure, pls correct if error...

hi there i would like to ask does changing the router improve performance?
*
if u r in a small area with 1-2 users, usually close to the wifi router, need not change.
a better router improves wifi coverage distance, strength and possibly stability.
works very well for 2 storey houses with multiple wifi device users in various areas incl corners.

I bought the  ASUS RT-N12 D1 online with Lazada.
http://www.lazada.com.my/asus-rt-n12-d1-wi...ter-461355.html
It costs me only RM119, with a RM10 discount and free delivery (COD) to my house.

from websites, rt n12d1 is 2x5dbi antenna, much cheaper at rm119 or 129.

rt n12hp which looks exactly the same is 2x9dbi at rm199 or 209 at the stores.

i guess they r of the same family, maybe minor differences with some components inside...?

from your and my experience, both seem to work good.

Currently I am using Asus RT-N12HP (HP = high power, with 9dBi 38cm long antennas). So far so good but I only use wireless for smartphones. For laptops & PCs I go for HomePlug instead.
*
i m also using this fine router.
try using wifi for pc/laptops, shud be ok. think u dun need homeplugs unless very far.
i am using pc on wifi 50ft, signal always all green, strong. old dlink one, it was always yellow.
androidtv box wifi 60ft getting hd video, no problem.

here, from pc on wifi:

Well, if you stay in a high-rise condo with so many interfering neighbor access points, the performance may not be optimum once you are like 5m away from the access point. That's the limitation of wireless technology anyway.
*
ah.....high density... yes, not same as houses.

can try changing wifi channels... 1 to 11 available, see which one is best...

and... did you consider getting dual band router to use 5ghz instead of 2.4ghz router cum homeplugs?
users say that is very effective for high density condo wifi users.

Hi guys,

I've got a problem with my unifi modem. The modem shows 3 lights. And the "earth" light turns to orange. I'm able to connect to my unifi but it says limited access. My neighbour's unifi working fine while mine is not.

The problem started last friday, when I was browsing FB and watched some streams. Is there any ways to solve this? It's been 3 days already.
*
modem or router, orange light is no good.

try switching off everything, check cable connects all good, wait 20 secs. turn on again, see if good.

if no good, still orange light(s) or no light, call unifi to reset/refresh. that usually works unless u hv hardware failure.

I've done everything you said. The result is still the same. I.. I just hard reseted my modem and now the orange light turns green but "wifi/line" light symbol got no light. I'm not sure if I just done something terrible.. Lol.
Edit: Modem is the one not working. Router seems fine.
*
in that case, dun waste time. call unifi, report and see when they will send someone to check.
if modem failed, dun worry - you get free replacement under unifi warranty for lifetime.

QUOTE(jolmy @ Sep 2 2014, 06:05 PM)
changing channels do help sometimes, but the problem is I have this neighbor with signals about the same strength as mine has his channel set to auto and occupying 40MHz channel width. So it all depends. I have set my channel to 1, 20MHz width, and if he is on any channel from 6 to 13 then my Wi-FI works better. But the moment he is only channel 1 to 5, my speed will be affected unless I am within 3 metres from the access point.

5GHz higher frequency hence shorter range. I used to use TP-Link WDR4300 but unfortunately as the master room where I spend most of my time at is some 7m away from the point I place the access point, the signal gets weakened. On top of that, my laptop does NOT have 5GHz but my phone has.

So I have resorted to the usage of direct Ethernet cable when possible, e.g. a laptop and a smart TV box that I place at the living room which is close enough to the router, while laptops/desktop computers at the rooms will connect via Ethernet + HomePlug.

Wireless is only used for mobile devices such as smartphones, and also for visitors/guests (when they do pay me a visit) to connect their devices to. For this, the Asus RT-N12HP helps providing stronger signals in the master room compared to the TP-Link WDR4300, due to this router uses 9dBi high power antennas. Basically I get a much stronger & stabler connection, but suffers from slower speed due to interference from the neighbor.
*
thanks for info, appreciate it.

i can now understand why u need to use homeplug.

Guys, is it worth it taking the VIP10 over VIP5? Additional RM 50 monthly, but the fee for mega or sports pack worth RM50 per month is free right? Is the 10mbps speed close to as advertised?
*
normally, if u go straight to vip10, rm199 w/o mega or sports pack, need to pay rm50 to get.
mega/sports pack comes foc only for vip5 upgrade to vip10 after 2 yrs contract.
or vip5 contract over, upgrade to vip10 for rm169/179 w/o mega/sports pack when they call.
if u can get straight vip10 rm199 with foc mega/sports pack, i say worth it, go for it.

performance... for me, good, even better after replacing the cheap router (1 yr warranty).
keep the modem as it is life time warranty.

here, more or less i always get this, wifi 50ft, location shah alam:

Yeah they have a promotion on now I think where the sports/mega pack is free for VIP10 and above. Think I'll go for that. Now should I get the mega or sports pack. Probably sports since it has BPL.
*
can check out this thread on hypptv.
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2918894/+860

i m not sports fan but heard fren say the sports pack is not good enough...?

megapack is a general package of local, chinese, english, tv shows, entertainment, documentaries, kids.
not the best and latest ones but some are acceptable. the real hd ones are fine in video quality.

if u r into more entertainment, consider getting an androidtv box. vip10 works very well on such a box, more so when u replace with a better router:

just bought a RT-N12D1 from lazada, now i have a problem, after i fill in the username and password, but still cannot cannect to internet.

For the wifi strength, very weird the TM modem more strong compare with RT-N12D1
*
for unifi using this range of asus routers, if u had keyed in the right id and pw (not the wifi one, need to call unifi for it), the likely error is you missed ticking the "special requirement from isp/home unifi" box at one step.

for hypptv stb, you will be given upon installation by the installer.

for hypptv everywhere, u need to call unifi to activate.
the id (same as stb) and pw (diff from stb) will be forwarded to u by email.
all within a few hrs.

My house unifi is acting weird. I did a restart (turn on and off the power) on the modem yesterday, and now I wanna connect to china websites (taobao), but kenot login (stuck on login page)

Then my phone and ipad certain apps dont have network connection, same apps in both device. but both device can watch youtube, no problem with apps store.

Just the same china ebook reader apps cant connect T.T
*
now that u mention this, i think everyone has problem accessing china sites now. i also hv problem accessing some china sites... some dead, some working but barely, need to try many times.

unifi acted weird a few days ago, then ok, now bad again. even the voip phone becomes problematic can call out, can't receive...

seems to me some major unifi intermittent problem affecting access to china sites, mainly.

i m sure it is not yr payment issue.

now, unifi speed is back, upload/dwnld good, but access to china sites still poor/none.

powering down n up again modem n router does not help.

a fren called me yesterday, same problem.

think we wait a day or 2, see if all returns to normal.

if not, will give unifi a call.

i hope it is not a case of some undersea cable damaged!
