As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Come on... Giggs? It's really romantic, but not realistic. I'd love to see that happen, but not now. Titles are won over a season of 50+ games, not 4 games.

I've been following the LVG story closely, it's likely to be confirmed and announced by next week before he officially starts work on the Dutch World Cup team.

Oh, and if it's LVG, don't expect a lot of big buys. At least I hope not. I want to see young talents promoted and grow together like the Class of 92! I want to see under-performers shown the door!

Kinda like the line up.
4-4-1-1

At least not too cramp in the middle, its either Kagawa or Mata. Mata get the nod this time around.

Well we all notice the absentee of Kagawa but why no one mention Cleverly? tongue.gif

I agree. I think Giggs rotated too much to try to play all players. He should focus on getting the result instead of trying to keep all the players happy. Chicarito has been horrible along with Young and Fletcher.

You cannot complain Hernandez too much when he doesn't get the supply that he should be getting.

Young has been really bad and he should be subbed out much earlier, at least Nani trying to create something.

Giggs is just being another Moyes in this game, tactically I couldn't understand what he is trying to do. Should play the best men available and only a game weekly, they are all fit and don't require much rest.

He's trying to be the popular manager. Rotating to keep the player happy. Rubbish. Hasn't he learned from SAF you have to be ruthless at times.

Mistakes Giggsy made today ;

1) Played Young
2) Played with the same midfield after 60 minutes, everyone can see Flecther is out of form.
3) I don't know if Kagawa would have made any difference, but should have played him
4) Play RVP from first half. Hernandez should have been used as an impact sub.

Giggsy got wrong tactic...

Eh, vidic bukan sudah dpt yellow 1st half td meh?
Last game for vidic it seems.

Oh ya, i see this game too many passing around.

In the thread where unproven interim manager who talks too much about making OT a fortress again and banged his brother's wife for years can top the vote to be the next manager..

Not hard to jump into conclusion that same person commands the rebellion against previous manager.

That 'United Way' tag had been long gone the moment Moyes was sacked just after 10 months *in which if there wasn't business consideration in compensation, might had been sacked earlier

This is the first time I wanna them suffers the losses in remaining games, to let the players know it's them who contributes heavily to the fall of United.

MU at front is clearly left wanting... putting too much touch at the ball and could hardly threaten Sunderland.

Well looks like we wont make it into Europe after all.

this loss brings Man Utd fans back to reality from their fairytale dream. We all want Giggs to eventually manage Man Utd but definitely not now. He is not ready. What we all need is proven winner which is LVG. Hope the board will appoint him soon and he can start rebuilding the squad. After a few years of apprenticeship, I hope Giggs will be ready then.

Dont know what to say. All player has to take a blame. Play below par. All looks clueless. Flop of the match goes to Young, Fletcher and Carrick. Keep losing ball and cannot even hold ball.

Sunderland basically didn't put up a fight at midfield. We saw the ball being played around outside penalty box often.
Forwards just took too many touch and stop with the ball without doing something creative to break the defence.

Those dreamers rooting for giggs.... 1 win from Norwich and talk cock. Yes, giggs is magnificent winger n loyal to ManUtd. But some fans must be disillusioned tat we should give giggs the manager permanently. He have 0 experience compared to moyes.

Whats the difference to sack moyes n promote giggs? To do the manutd way??

I thought it was Moyes team out there playing today. Piss poor display by the experienced duo in midfield.

I guess it would take more than just spending millions upon millions on buying new players to repair this current team. Something rotten in the core. My prediction it would take some time to get this team back up there and I hope it is not just by buying new players.

Need to implement new ideas into the club I think. New ideas on playing football. New techniques and play with more sophistication. Combine those ideas with world class facilities that they already have. Hopefully some like LvG would bring that idea so in hope the current coach would take it up and learn something. Even Barca and La Masia was inspired by a Dutch.

I just hope current situation would *not* make potential stars like DDG and Janujaz looking elsewhere. With that kind of football every week, dont think anybody would.

Exactly. What would Januzaj think. Starting Young ahead of him. It's like he's not rated and appreciated. One of the reason why Pogba left besides greed.

- Fletcher really looked like he was off the pace today. His letting the cross in = goal conceded, albeit a well struck goal. Even aside from that, not enough energy in his game today. Tired? Bad day? Out of gas for the season considering he has played a fair bit after being out for years?

- Everyone here is not happy with Young, but for the opening 15mins or so when he was on the right wing he actually didn't look horrible. Not amazing, but not "omfggggg" horrible. Once he was swapped to the left wing = might as well sub him out. Seriously, even playing Evra as a left winger would be better. Either play Young as a RW, or don't play him at all. Playing him on LW is an exercise in frustration.

- Chicharito.. sigh. Want him to do well, but he plays 90 minutes like this and it is hard to see him being more than a super-duper sub for us. If he is not willing to accept that role or unable to deliver when he gets starts (and that has been the case a few times) then maybe it's better to sell him.

- Rooney injured/sick and RVP back for the first time in awhile. Why not start Welbeck, especially if the idea was to play Young on RW and have him cross. At least Welbeck has more height to attack crosses.

- DDG didn't amaze me this game. Not horrendous, but not his high standard play either. Can say the same for the defense overall though. Some moments where they could have done better.

- Overall the team lacked energy. Again, comes back to CM position. We lacked someone to dominate the middle of the park and control our attacks. Ended up the play could have been better, supply to strikers could have been better, and even when strikers got the ball or chances they didn't kill it. Confidence still weak? Or just a team with some players that's been inconsistent or poor for so long that the team can't raise themselves for more than a couple of games anymore?

Carrick is one thing, the other thing is out of all the players and defenders around the box not one tried to attack the cross. Ball watching? Defensive shape/tactics?

I dont think thats the right way to go. They have been loyal servants and players like Vidic and Evra showed us today that they still give their all when playing out there. It is the philosophy that needs to be renewed. Inject new fresh ideas. I guess it would be more sophisticated than just changing of personnel and what set of numbers you put in your formation. There was no movement no one touch passes no ball retention.

It would take more than just right motivation to make this team move forward. The board needs to make the right decision now and appoint someone with big brass balls to take on some big headed individuals in the team.

It would be a shame to see such talents like Jones Kagawa Mata Janujaz go to waste.

The board should f*ck their money and getting Mourinho into the team, the job that was supposedly done a year ago.

Just because media keeps reporting LVG, doesn't mean he's the best available candidate out there and suddenly some fans worships him, don't forget despite of some success, he's also the guy who often left his club due to internal conflict and even sacked in Barcelona when they were just three points above the relegation zone.

Some people lives under illusions of media, look at Bayern who wasted treble winner manager for a manager who can only play one way of football, from a European champions, to be 0-4 loser at their own turf.

Pogba left because:
1) He wanted a new contract with big wages. How much this was his work, how much was his agents, or combination of both sides, idk.
2) He wanted to play regularly. His own words, when SAF brought Scholes out of retirement after playing other players out of position in CM instead of playing him, that was when he knew it was over for him.

Januzaj is nowhere near that point, and he has actually played a lot over this season (a bit too much at one point, he was looking a bit flat). At this point he might actually be ok with it considering that:

1) It's not like we are fighting for titles now, Europa is "the best hope left" and even that is fast fading.
2) He is in the prelim WC squad for Belgium and he gets injured now, lost chance.

1) You're assuming Mourinho would want it after being ignored for Moyes. His ego is big to begin with.
2) Mourinho is famous for defensive (but effective) football and generally trusting older players more than youth (barring 1-2 exceptions).
3) Treble winner manager already planned to step down at the end of last season, no? Even now it seems he is happily retired. It was only when Bayern looked like winning the treble that the fuss in the press about keeping him vs bringing Pep on became a popular topic.

*
1) Exactly. Nothing to play for so why not play the youngsters. They are the future. Giggs was played as a youngster as well.
2) He needs to keep playing and impresses Wilmot to have a chance. Not playing because of fear of injuries doesn't makes his chances of getting on the squad any better.

QUOTE(gr8fr8 @ May 4 2014, 12:16 AM)

*
Problem is:
1) Vidic already decided to go to Inter
2) Evra is always awesome going forward, but defensively he has been giving heart-attacks for around 2 years now. Keep him as a LW? hehehe
3) Out of the 3 big defensive seniors (Vidic/Rio/Evra), does anyone think Rio has been the best this season in terms of performance standards and attitude? If not, would keeping him be good or would it be compromising on standards?

Boils down to the next manager and his plans. Hopefully it's LVG or someone with experience and the skill to make the right choice(s).

I don't disagree about playing youngsters. One thing that I'm a bit surprised about with Giggs is that he has immediately used the 3 old defenders since taking over.
1st game at home = OK I get his point about wanting their experience in an emotional point in time for the club.
2nd game at home = Not willing to even change 1 of them to give a younger player more salt? More than Januzaj, this part bothers me. Vidic already confirmed going. Has Rio really been much better than the younger CBs we have? LB if nobody rates Buttner even when Evra is defensively not "there" anymore then I guess he is being sold soon.

CM = After looking at Carrick and Fletcher struggle today, probably best if the 2 are rotated instead of paired. Cleverley to partner? (hehehe)

Wings = Admittedly a bit stunned to see Young starting, but at least he was on the RW and not so horrible. But then he got shifted to the left (w.t.f. haven't we seen this enough already). Maybe Giggs wanted Nani on the right after seeing the team play for awhile. But then if so why sub Nani out later? Januzaj in for Young on the LW might have been better. Idk. All I know is Young on the LW hurts the eyes, brains, and heart.

Strikers = He wanted to give Chicharito minutes, but maybe starting him was a bit too much.

20/20 hindsight though.

Bar Vidic, if United simply discards "old players" just because of their age would cause more instability. I was referring to a post saying the old players should be kicked out. I still think Evra could become part of squad but maybe not first choice. Rio well maybe he is close to retirement anyway.

If anything I would like to see change of playing style rather than wholechange of personnel. Southampton managed to do good without so called world class players. If somehow United could combine intricate passing style with better first touches and ball retention with the SAF agressive counternattack way i would be great. The only team that is close to that idea now is Real Madrid for me. Play with width and good passing and ball retention. Good counter attack when chance arises.

That's the sad part. Between Vidic, Rio, and Evra, Vidic would have been the choice to keep. Why? Attitude and commitment didn't waver, even after he has announced he is going to Inter we can see he still cares. Sure some of his tackles are bad, but at least you know his mind is right. Evra would be second. Effort is solid, attacking he is awesome. Just that defensively he is poor. Keep him as a LW @ 2nd choice LB (would he even accept that?). I won't say anymore about Rio (the oldest of the 3, and sadly the one who has shown the least in terms of form).

Vidic deserves alot of respect for playing the way he did knowing he was leaving for inter.

which is why i think LVG would be a good thing.
those that are past their prime would need to go then bring up the youngsters we already have.
problem with the dressing room is some still not united with many differing thoughts.
need someone to come in and really have the "balls" to clean house.

saf did it when he first came in....even such a decorated player like mark hughes had to go to accommodate saf's vision and playing style....which is why people usually say he is ruthless.

moyes try to do a slow evolution and being a nice guy, it didn't turn out well.

1. Yes, I am assuming personal gesture of SAF himself comes knocking his door as the people he respects is enough to deal with his ego.

2. Football nowadays is expecting consistent results in instant way, IF it needs older players who can deliver consistent result so be it, do you think currently fans have the patience anyway, if fans at this thread becomes the parameter, it is already out of question. Though those barred exceptions should extends to larger numbers if you've been following his career.

3. The answer is no. Uli Hoeness their former president said that Heynckes' departure was forced by agreement the club has with Pep.

Wayne Rooney could be lining up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Paris Saint-Germain if French club pay £35m for Man Utd star

QUOTE
Paris Saint-Germain will consider a summer move for Wayne Rooney.
Should Louis van Gaal's appointment as Manchester United manager go through this week, Rooney’s future at the club will be cast into doubt.
Already there have been rumours Rooney is worried about his prospects if the Dutchman gets the job.

With van Gaal in charge Robin van Persie, who was set to quit the club in the summer, is likely to be persuaded to stay.
And van Gaal, who will manage Van Persie with Holland at the World Cup, is set to make his compatriot the main man up front and perhaps even offer him the captaincy.
With other forwards likely to be signed, Rooney could well face a struggle for a place in the starting line-up.
Certainly his nose will be put out of joint just a few months after committing his future to United on a massive £300,000-a-week deal.
But that deal means that the club will now be able to command a decent price for Rooney – had he not signed then his fee would have dipped under the £10million mark this summer, given that he only has a year left on his contract

But United could ask for around £35m for the 28-year-old England striker.
Chelsea are unlikely to be interested any longer and no other English club would want to meet Rooney’s transfer fee and wages. PSG though would, despite them facing sanctions from UEFA (in the Champions League) under Financial Fair Play regulations.
The ambitious French club were poised to make a move for Rooney in January but United decided to meet his pay demands.
It is believed the player is reluctant to leave the Premier League but a move to PSG may prove his best option if he is no longer central to Van Gaal’s plans.
In the meantime, Rooney is battling to be fit for the World Cup.
It is feared a lingering groin injury which has kept him out of action could actually be a hernia problem which requires surgery.

How about a Rooney+10mil Cavani swap deal eh? I fancy Cavani's workrate as a forward, quite similar to Rooney cool2.gif

Will be interesting to see what the new manager will do in the transfer market. We know lots of scouting and meetings have been made with players agents but it might not be the players the new managers want. Later become like the case of Tottenham players after AVB got sacked.

Giggs played the similar lineup bar the striker during Moyes reign.TBH,the cente of the midfield is pretty much "broken".Even if u replace with Cleverley or OOF Fellaini, you still can't do anything. cry.gif Signing midfield steel like William Carvalho.. brows.gif would be a good signing.Plus,if LVG do takes over,he'll either play flat 4-3-3 or attacking 4-3-3..which would give Mata and Kagawa a chance to show their creativity in the latter formation. nod.gif

Hmm I would welcome any quality players and last night dead rubber match with horrible display does warrant shipping half of deadwood.

However, it does warrant regardless any manager who came in will get his players and still need more than a season to gel and clickin'. Perhaps another one or two season of out top four (but definitely will do better than 7th)

I would be really, really, REALLY surprised if United could pull one or two of the 5 off, let alone all laugh.gif Maybe Cesc can help patch up that midfield, but if playing

style doesnt change, it would still be same story like this season ph34r.gif

I would be really, really, REALLY surprised if United could pull one or two of the 5 off, let alone all  laugh.gif Maybe Cesc can help patch up that midfield, but if playing

style doesnt change, it would still be same story like this season ph34r.gif

I think we need experience and tough manager. LvG fit the bill. He is tough and will note tolerate under perform players.

I think the problem for new manager to adapt is because Man Utd is such a massive club and pressure is high. The existing senior players also trying to play their parts like a manager (ego you can say). So when DM come to Utd, he is trying to implement his defensive philosophy, which totally opposite of Utd attacking philosophy. What he failed to do is to convince the existing players that his philosophy work. He also failed to stamp his authority in the club, often took the blame for poor performance when it is the players who perform badly. Even more worst is the way he handle the media... totally negative.

As for Giggs, he got the history backing him. But he really lack in experience and tactical knowledge. His response to media after defeat show he is lacking idea how to change the tactic to win games. I believe by having LvG as manager, he can learn a lot.

I think if we can get Guardiola, he probably can manage for long term. He has his proven records to back him. After a dismay season, players will believe his philosophy. The pressure is gone also after DM. But disadvantage is Giggs will not have the job long term.

Agreed. Sino is a master tactician and motivator. Has won multiple awards and trophies with multiple team. In another sense, he's a younger LvG. Thou not sure if he goes around showing his balls to everyone.

strootman possibly van gaal favorite player in dutch nt setup. unluckily he currently injured, expected to be back in sept/oct.

i expect van gaal will focus on buying dutch or bundesliga-based player, which he's very familiar with. not a bad thing. based on his track record, i expect him to sign only 2 or 3 players.

we're not even qualify to europa league. massive clear out are looked more certain than massive buy in.

The bolded part sums it all. Trying hard to be Ronaldo. He has the potential, but not utilizing it. What a pity.

As for Rooney, he can leave if he feels 'threatened'. Rio should stay, his presence in the club is very much needed. Can be used as a utility player thou.

Rooney can be a world class CM. But he just don't see it that way. He is pretty confidence he is a world class STR, which is good determination but bad for Man Utd. So unless he accepts his role as CM, he will do no good to us and it is wise he just leave. When DM is manager, I hope Rooney stay coz i afraid DM is unable to carry Man Utd himself. But if LvG in, I believe we do not need Rooney.

Rooney has a ego problem. I doubt the CM role suits him at all. His first touch is always awful, a good CM requires good first touch and distribution vision. Rooney has the vision but he often overhit passes, gives away possession too easily. He works best at CF, behind Van Persie. But the problem lies on his positioning, he is all over the pitch.

Whenever a player thinks he is too big for the club, he has to leave. Rooney is not a calibre of Ronaldo, Messi, Ibra range, yet he thinks that he is somewhere between them. Get back to reality Wayne.

40 mil gbp is a good price for rooney. i think all 3 parties will benefit that deal.

we will make room for a lesser ego player, with only a 25-30 percent of rooney's salary, hernandez. the quality will be drop though, but long term benefit because hernandez will be in his prime age.

Totally agree about his attitude. As for CM, he doesn't seem to know/care when to make a quick penetrating pass. Instead he keeps trying to dink balls to the wings even when there are central options ahead of him. Ends up needlessly slowing down play at times (.e.g. on the counter).

Rooney doesn't have the vision for making key passes. All he does is going sideways. He is a good emergency CM but not for every game. His awareness and

discipline is lacking for that kind of key positions. He is a great striker no doubt, but pretty average at other positions.

Actually he has the ability to pass and vision occassionally to play as CM. But doesn't have the discipline. Always wants to run up to Forward.

Rooney used to be a great alternative to our CM, but that only happened during SAF days. Remember when we were 2 or more goals up, he would be instructed to be our box2box man, in order to replace tiring Fletcher or Anderson. He was exceptional though, hardworking, offensively and defensively. His long passes were almost Scholes-like, and his defense rate was second to none. Those days were his prime times IMO, but time passes, so does his greatness, solely caused by his own ego unfortunately.

If the next manager knows how to handle it (LvG has the criteria), given the lad ready to step down his ego, then I'm sure it will be fine for both parties and thus pursuing his dream on overtaking Sir Bobby's goal scoring record.

If not, I cant see any reason on why would we keep him. No man bigger than the club. Enough said.

Got pros and cons of not being in Europa League.

Good thing is if the manager wants to do drastic rebuilding by removing the deadwood/subpar players/player who want to leave (dump 5-6 players at once, or even more) then not being in Europe will be a bonus. Less games = smaller squad can still cope. Also, more time to work on the training ground (integrate new signings, get players used to changes).

Main con will be loss of prestige and income for the club, and the younger members of the squad miss out on a season of European experience.

Personally, I think the biggest issue facing the team right now, regarding performances is motivation. They have nothing left to play for and are playing for a manager who has been confirmed as a temporary manager, rendering him a lame duck.

I agree that having no Europe is good to allow the team to rebuild and focus on the league.

But not having Europe has bigger repercussions than just smaller income. Very few class players would be willing to go to a team with no European football next season. That would seriously hamper rebuilding. That is my major concern.

Unless it is confirmed that United can still get the players they want without European football, I think it is better for United to be in Europe.

I gotta agree that a United core is essential. They make good support as squad players. What the team really needs is a rebuilding of the spine of the team. Half the spine is gone. Vidic, Ferdinand, Scholes, Carrick (getting old). Also, we need to start a transition plan to replace Evra.

If they're lacking motivation, then it's an attitude problem or a man-management problem. Before the Sunderland loss, winning all our remaining games would have given us a decent shot at qualifying for the Europa league. Not the CL, but still European football.

As for class players, on one hand it would be sweet to get a couple of big names (Fabregas, Kroos, Cavani) in to have as a spine for the next few years. On the other hand, even with CL football this season no big names made the move last summer. One thing I gotta, say, for all our FM2014 ideas and signing hopes, how often have United ever signed big name European players in the past 10-15 years? The only one that immediately comes to mind is Veron. Our transfer market style has been more along the lines of signing solid/promising continental players (Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Nani, etc) and trying to get the most out of them. If we nicked big names, it's often been EPL big names (Cole, Yorke, Ferdinand, Berbatov, RVP, etc) instead of continental big names.

LVG *might* change this, since his name has continental weight and his style for signings is less clear than SAF. On the other hand, he is also rumored to be the sort that would rather focus on player development instead of big name signings.

Sounds like you're almost ready to call him David Moyes tongue.gif

That loss against Sunderland, if it had been DM still in charge then we would have seen more comments like:
1) Another record breaking achievement, home loss against Sunderland for the first time in DECADES. WTF IS DIS?!
2) Another home loss, omgwtfbbq
3) Young AGAIN. Mata out?! Nani out?! Welbeck playing?! No Kagawa?!?!
4) Players playing like shit!! Manager motivation skills mana?! Selection sucks! Tactics not working! Cannot even score goal?! How many shots on target?! Home game FFS!
5) #MANAGEROUT

Instead since it's Giggs, he of epic vote tally leading here, things are much less explosive. Someone even said at least morale is better now biggrin.gif

The only positive thing I can take from the Sunderland loss is at least the media and bandwagon to have Giggs made manager is slowed/halted. He and Scholes as manager(s) would be nice, when they have gained enough experience as managers to make them ready to take the gig. Not this season, or anytime in the next 2-3 years from the looks of it. Not when we need a ruthless manager to knock everyone into place and kick out the rubbish performances.

Basically this season, I feel only Jones, De Gea, Januzaj have done well.

I think if LvG come, only De Gea, Jones, Januzaj, RvP are safe.

Then again, I really hope Kagawa will flourish under LvG next season... go go Kagawa!

I generally agree with you on both counts. That said, it's Giggs 2nd game in charge and after his first loss his reaction to the loss already included the nightmare line "I honestly don't know". If DM had said that he would have been flayed (like he was when he said something similar after the loss to Stoke). Giggs post-Sunderland loss comments. Replace "Giggs" with "Moyes" for that whole article and how different would the reaction have been?

I forgot a few more lines we have seen a lot this season. "Champions by 11 points to THIS?!" "WTF same mistakes again and again, when will he ever LEARN?" A lot of times we have seen fans saying the team is as good or some even claimed BETTER this season in terms of personnel compared to last season.

If the problems this season were 100% due to the manager alone, then how do we explain the Sunderland game? Giggs has been in the coaching staff and the first team all season, how do we explain him:
- Choosing to start/play Young (something that makes so many of us groan)?
- Or that when Young was not doing enough to stay on the RW he was not subbed out but instead moved to the LW (where he has been doing sweet f*** all for most of the season, barring a couple of games where he scored)?
- How do we explain Kagawa not even being on the bench? Or Welbeck coming on when we needed goals?
- So many changes in the lineup compared to the previous game vs Norwich (DM got a lot of flak for "excessive tinkering, changing the team all the time").

These are the exact same things DM got nuked for. Giggs has seen it all and from the inside as a coach and a player this season. So doesn't this make his choice to REPEAT these decisions which have (rightly or wrongly) been labelled mistakes even WORSE?

Or maybe the players are just pulling the same stunt they tried under DM, because nobody (DM, Giggs) is SAF. Look OK in training, then slouch off on game day. Maybe being manager of United is tougher than we gave credit for. Maybe the team DOES need massive rebuilding and isn't fine or better than last season.

I gotta say I'm not wishing DM was back, nor am I defending his mistakes (he definitely made mistakes). Just saying DM has been a scapegoat and focus of blame all season for the poor performances. Now that he is not even in the same country/continent as the team turning out this kind of performance, maybe we can look past blaming the manager and look at the team itself.

Why? Because whoever the next manager of United is, it is not impossible he will also struggle next season. Even Mourinho "going home to Chelsea" is having some bad results this season (losing at home to Sunderland, the CL 2nd leg performance/result, a draw to Norwich, his press conferences have become more negative as the season passes, etc).

Hopefully next season we won't repeat the "WTF la this guy should not be United manager, it should have been [insert alternative name]" cycle quite as quickly or brutally if results and performances don't meet our hopes and expectations. Something tells me it's going to be awhile before we can regularly be happy with the team and results.

Hard to say. Rumor is he is lacking the discipline or confidence to perform well enough, hence his being benched a lot even at Cardiff. Hopefully he doesn't turn out to be another Ravel Morrison (talented but mentality and attitude not up to scratch).

QUOTE(sunblaze @ May 5 2014, 04:18 PM)

All this while, I also commenting about the team not good enough and of course Moyes did perform badly as a manager too....
Young kept being picked was really beyond me.... even under Giggs..... is it because this is a world cup year? We need to keep playing the shitty English players in order to have some Manchester united players in the England team? Please...

and CM/DM area has been our poor area even during SAF era... that area has not been renew and improves since long ago.
And Rooney's pay rise get things even worse.

Lulz this ABU's. Saying ohh you people siok lah, don't need to wake up at 3 am. See first if can pass group stage or not.

Anyways, if LVG comes in or any other manager with his own set of ego and pride, hopefully he can whip the team to what it used to be, don't give two farks to people like Rooney , I appreciate what he has done for the club in the past, but the past doesn't matter when the future you act as such, who'll hold ransom of the club and the deadwoods should gtfo.

Lingard so kesian performed very well in pre-season but once the season starts...oh well.

Hoping this pre-season (in US versus big clubs yuuu) lots of players will have the chance to impress the new manager and play in league and cup games. Mana tahan tengok Powell perform so well on loan haish!

I just realized it will be Vidic's (and probably some other players too) final home game for United. Thank you captain!

What's wrong with Januzaj?

Young cross didn't even pass the first defender. He's utterly crap. On right wing, can't cross pass first defender, on left wing, always have to check back to right foot before crossing.

Tony Pulis reveals Sir Alex Ferguson convinced him to take Crystal Palace job

QUOTE
Tony Pulis claims Sir Alex Ferguson convinced him that he could keep Crystal Palace up.

Palace are virtual certainties to survive after recording a fourth straight win over Everton and Pulis revealed that Fergie was one of just two people who told him to take the job in November.

“Did I have doubts about taking it?” said the Eagles boss. “It was difficult. I met Steve Parish and spoke to Steve about four or five times and I didn’t feel it was right.

“I looked at it and everyone I spoke to said it was a difficult one.

“Sir Alex Ferguson and Peter Coates, my old chairman at Stoke, they were the only two who said to take it. They were two very good judges!

“I hadn’t seen Palace play, but I enjoy a challenge. It’s in my nature to stand up and try to march people forward and we’ve done that.

“The players have been wonderful and you can’t do it without them. They have responded to us and given us everything.”

Pulis has guided Palace to the magic 40-point mark and he believes they are safe.

“When we went to Hull, the club only had four points,” he said. “Now we’ve got 40 points. It’s nice to say we’re going to be a Premier League club - and with four games left. The supporters have deserved this for sticking with us.”

Everton boss Roberto Martinez insists they can still make the Champions League, despite losing ground to Arsenal in the race for fourth.

“I don’t think Arsenal will take full points from now until the end of the season,” he said.

“If you look at the table, you could think it is out of our hands, but I feel it is in our hands because it is down to how many points we can get from now until the end of the season.”

I watched it after the sub came in. Can only wished that Man Utd played the way Palace played in the final 10 minutes this season. Crazy game.

And Suarez equaled the 31 goal record with less game.

LVG will watch the game at OT or not you think? Hehe.

Sounds like a plan. brows.gif

I think this election got too much fraud edi. We should start fresh with a new poll.

And unfortunately for Sino, he will be indicted and convicted of liwat with limjenson by this evening. So he will not be eligible to compete in the next poll. whistling.gif

even refs decisions /mistakes even out through out the campaigns.

if liverpool win the league this year, ive no problem to calling them the best team in england.

Vidic: The farewell interview

Nemanja Vidic admits he does now know what emotions he will experience while completing a lap of honour after his final match as a Manchester United player at Old Trafford tonight.

This evening's encounter with Hull City promises to be a poignant occasion for Serbian, who hopes to lead the team out as captain before joining Italian side Inter Milan in the summer. As such, Vida is naturally sad about the occasion but equally determined to bow out with a win.

"You never know what is going to happen with your emotions," Nemanja explains in tonight's edition of United Review, the matchday programme. "You can try to predict but I wasn't emotional before and I haven't cried yet! We will see what happens after the last game. It is going to be sad."

"As we didn't do well this season, that walk around Old Trafford won't be the same after many years where we have always been celebrating something after the final game. Now, it has become a chance to thank the fans for supporting us this year. I think this is definitely the least that we can do."

"We must perform in these last games to give them something to look forward to next season and to believe this team can win again. That is what the players are thinking about now - to try to put on good performances and build on that next season."

Asked if he has a message for the United fans, Vidic says: "Thank you for all the support you have given me over the years. I know I will be supporting the club in the future. Hopefully we can win as many trophies as we did in my eight years over the next eight years."

Evra sad to see Vidic leave

Patrice Evra admits he will be sad to see Nemanja Vidic leave Manchester United when the Serbian defender joins Inter Milan this summer.

Vidic has agreed a switch to the Italian side when his contract expires at the end of the season and will depart Old Trafford after eight-and-a-half-years, having originally moved to the Reds during the 2006 January transfer window – the same time as Evra himself.

"It's painful to lose Vida," said the Frenchman whose nickname for Vida is 'The Rock'. "For me, he is a great centre-back. When you see a player like Vidic leaving the club, you feel really sad."

The pair endured a tough start to life in England, with Evra recalling one particularly difficult performance. However, they soon adapted and helped to form what was one of Europe's finest defences for many years, picking up plenty of silverware in the process.

"When you speak about Vida, it’s like you’re speaking about myself," the full-back continued. "We joined the club together. I remember the first game was so hard. In one match, we played in the reserves together. We were so poor!

"Rene Meulensteen was the [reserve team] manager and he took us both off! We were talking in the dressing room and saying: 'Oh my, why have we come to Manchester United? We should go back to our old clubs!'

"It was a difficult moment but we stuck together. We’ve been in the same hotel going into training and, together, we’ve won the same trophies. I’m really sad to lose him."

goodbye to giggs -the player, and vidic. possibly evra and ferdinand too..

great debut by wilson. we starting the front 3, all of them are teenagers. proud of them.

fellaini is mediocre am. only useful to knockdown set piece deliveries /crosses or defending it. he will be an expensive benchwarmer under van gaal unless he step up and improve himself as dm.

good end for disastrous season. hope we can pip the last europa league spot from spurs.

beside the 2 goals, i dont think i see something special in wilson. both clinical finish, damn if he cant finish that. positively, he know to position himself in good scoring positions. physically, he have a lot works to do. he's young, lots of time for that.

lawrence, he love to run through defenders. his dribbling technique not neat yet, but seem effective. got some pace to burn.

i love to see them in coc next season. good debut.

I just remember that we always had a good laugh at liverpool no matter where they ended..sometimes for no apparent reason.

Sometime it goes like this.

Patrice Evra: Hey Wayne, you wanna hear a joke?

Wayne Rooney: What?

Patrice Evra: Liverpool Football Club

He's a great finisher. Check out the past couple of reserve goals that he scored. You don't see Chicarito scoring those goals.
If he can be our Inzaghi, I am happy.

I heard that Kags is going back to his old club? Please don't!! I really blame moyes for underutilizing his talent. OMG look at that 3rd goal pass to RVP, salivating!

To be honest, LVG would be good, but if he brings in all the big guns, we'll undermine some brilliant young talents. And not to mention we havent brought out the best of afro, kags, mata, janu. I still prefer Giggsy tongue.gif

I think LVG has a good history of utilizing young talents. His Ajax team was full of young talents, he bought up Thomas Muller at Bayern. Not sure about Barca thou.

chicharito been our 4th striker for the 2 last season.. i think wilson can and should get the chance to fill the boot as our option forward

No direct replacement needed. Kagawa and Mata can both play in the #10 role. Behind them, Powell is also an AM.

i dont mind if we offload hernandez if we got no european football next season. if possible, a loan deal will be more ideal because he's a gem and gut to see him leave.

his slot as 4th choice striker will be given to younger striker. wilson is too young imo, i think the likes of henriquez is more deserve to get a chance. he got 5 goals for zaragoza this season. henriquez's 20 y.o, in many ways, he's far more ready than wilson.

Januzaj's original position is CF actually. The reason why the Belgian coach wanted Janu to play for them during the WC is because he can replace Benteke biggrin.gif Januzaj is very versatile.

As for the topic of Rooney's replacement, yeah we don't need to replace a player of calibre, BUT we need another striker. Why? What if RVP gets injured again? You cannot depend on Welbeck/Chica to replace them mang. Look at how many goals they've scored between them? doh.gif If Rooney were to be offloaded, we need another striker, that's for sure. RVP is 30, he cannot play week in week out.

Wilson..er he is too young to be played regularly. Future prospect but not to be rushed. Still need another striker regardless. Cavani plz. Or Jackson Martinez.

offload chica. poor guy has no play time. he's such a good poacher. aston villa is interested and if he has first team there i'm happy.

Runi.... maybe keep maybe sell. OFF LOAD WELBACK PLS! keep RVP only and maybe Runi. or trade Runi for someone tongue.gif

Maybe we need specialised wingers. or maybe not! 4-3-3 diamond attack. or lone striker backed with mata kagawa janu tongue.gif yum yum.

Yeah. He played as CF and F9 last year for the reserve team cause Will Keane was injured and James Wilson was still learning his trade a level below.
