As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

QUOTE
Vidic: The farewell interview

Nemanja Vidic admits he does now know what emotions he will experience while completing a lap of honour after his final match as a Manchester United player at Old Trafford tonight.

This evening's encounter with Hull City promises to be a poignant occasion for Serbian, who hopes to lead the team out as captain before joining Italian side Inter Milan in the summer. As such, Vida is naturally sad about the occasion but equally determined to bow out with a win.

"You never know what is going to happen with your emotions," Nemanja explains in tonight's edition of United Review, the matchday programme. "You can try to predict but I wasn't emotional before and I haven't cried yet! We will see what happens after the last game. It is going to be sad."

"As we didn't do well this season, that walk around Old Trafford won't be the same after many years where we have always been celebrating something after the final game. Now, it has become a chance to thank the fans for supporting us this year. I think this is definitely the least that we can do."

"We must perform in these last games to give them something to look forward to next season and to believe this team can win again. That is what the players are thinking about now - to try to put on good performances and build on that next season."

Asked if he has a message for the United fans, Vidic says: "Thank you for all the support you have given me over the years. I know I will be supporting the club in the future. Hopefully we can win as many trophies as we did in my eight years over the next eight years."

QUOTE
Evra sad to see Vidic leave

Patrice Evra admits he will be sad to see Nemanja Vidic leave Manchester United when the Serbian defender joins Inter Milan this summer.

Vidic has agreed a switch to the Italian side when his contract expires at the end of the season and will depart Old Trafford after eight-and-a-half-years, having originally moved to the Reds during the 2006 January transfer window – the same time as Evra himself.

"It's painful to lose Vida," said the Frenchman whose nickname for Vida is 'The Rock'. "For me, he is a great centre-back. When you see a player like Vidic leaving the club, you feel really sad."

The pair endured a tough start to life in England, with Evra recalling one particularly difficult performance. However, they soon adapted and helped to form what was one of Europe's finest defences for many years, picking up plenty of silverware in the process.

"When you speak about Vida, it’s like you’re speaking about myself," the full-back continued. "We joined the club together. I remember the first game was so hard. In one match, we played in the reserves together. We were so poor!

"Rene Meulensteen was the [reserve team] manager and he took us both off! We were talking in the dressing room and saying: 'Oh my, why have we come to Manchester United? We should go back to our old clubs!'

"It was a difficult moment but we stuck together. We’ve been in the same hotel going into training and, together, we’ve won the same trophies. I’m really sad to lose him."

QUOTE
Manchester United interim manager Ryan Giggs and some of his fellow Class of '92 graduates will take part in a pre-season friendly against Salford City.

Giggs, along with former United team-mates Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, bought non-league Salford back in March.

And now they will play in a friendly against the Northern Premier League Division One North side on August 7 as part of a 'Class of 92 Legends Team' with funds raised for the game going to the club.

In a statement the United legends said: "'We are really looking forward to the match, it will certainly be competitive.

"It will be good to play with each other again, it's been a long time but more importantly we will want to give Salford City a tough game.

"We are going to ask some familiar faces to play with us and we will be sure it will be an entertaining game for the fans of Salford City."

sad.gif There goes another record. Let's blame Moyes? sad.gif

I think we might lose this. Leaving Fletcher to marshal the midfield. His last match was totally horrible.
No place on Fellaini on the bench at all.
*
I think Shinji will stay a bit more central alongside Fletch while Welbeck stay outwide left.

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward to address investors

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will speak to shareholders today as the search for a new manager nears its conclusion.

United's three-quarter results were released to the New York Stock Exchange this lunchtime, with Woodward hosting an investors' conference call at 1300.

He and Ryan Giggs have held talks with Louis van Gaal in the Netherlands.

BBC Sport understands Van Gaal has agreed to replace David Moyes, with Giggs offered the role of assistant.

Van Gaal will sign a three-year contract to take over as manager, with his work due to begin immediately after the Netherlands' World Cup campaign is over.

Media reports suggested an announcement about him taking the role could be made prior to Woodward's scheduled conference call on Thursday.

However, it is now thought early next week is more likely.

The 62-year-old used a designated rest day from preparations at the Dutch training camp in Hoenderloo on Wednesday to meet with Giggs and Woodward.

Giggs then returned to Manchester to watch United's Under-21 side lose to Chelsea at Old Trafford.

It is not yet known whether Giggs will accept the role of assistant manager, or if the 40-year-old is to extend his playing career, having made his 962nd appearance against FA Cup finalists Hull City on 6 May.

Van Gaal is expected to be accompanied by two long-standing members of his backroom team, goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek and video analyst Max Reckers.

Having got the full 30-man provisional Dutch squad together for the first time, Van Gaal has a friendly against Ecuador in Amsterdam on Saturday to prepare for.

The Netherlands then have two weeks before their next game, against Ghana in Rotterdam on 31 May.

They are scheduled to meet up again on Tuesday, then fly to Portugal for a week long training camp.

For United fans though, re-establishing the club amongst England's elite remains the overwhelming priority.

In confirming commercial revenues of £42.8 million and increased broadcasting revenues of 64.1% for the quarter ending 31 March, 2014, the club have put themselves in a strong financial position to ride out the loss of Champions League income next season.

And Woodward has signalled an intent to return the Red Devils to the success they enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson.

"We once again generated record revenues as all of our businesses delivered impressive year over year growth," said Woodward.

"This puts us in a healthy financial position to continue to invest in the squad. Everyone at the Club is working hard to ensure the team is back challenging for the title and trophies next season."

Robin van Persie expected to be Louis van Gaal's captain at Manchester United

Robin van Persie is expected to be named as Manchester United's new captain when Louis van Gaal is confirmed as the club's new manager, according to leading Dutch journalist Pascal Kamperman.

Van Gaal led Netherlands' final training session before their friendly with Ecuador on Saturday, with the timescale on his highly-anticipated move to United no clearer.

The 62-year-old named van Persie as the permanent captain of the Dutch side 11 months ago and Kamperman expects the former Arsenal striker to succeed Inter Milan-bound Nemanja Vidic as United skipper.

"Yeah I think so because they do have a good relationship," Kamperman told Sky Sports News when asked if he thought van Persie would captain United next season.

"At the beginning when van Gaal took over as the head coach of the Dutch national team they had to find their position a little bit. But after that it went really well and van Persie was very positive about him.

"When van Persie was over here (in Holland) last month because of his injury they talked a lot about the World Cup and the way they like to play in Brazil. So yes he does have a very good relationship with him."

The Dutch squad have two days off after the Ecuador game before they fly to Portugal for a week-long training camp as they step up their World Cup preparations.

It is thought that van Gaal could travel to Manchester in that time to finalise his appointment as David Moyes' successor.

Initial reports at the beginning of the week suggested a deal would be done before that but Kamperman insisted nothing should be read into the delay.

"I don't know exactly of course (when a deal will be completed) but I think some details are still being arranged," he said. "I think he has an agreement but (talks are ongoing) about the staff and new players.

"It might take a couple of hours or a couple of days but it will be a done deal."

Van Gaal named United manager

- Club appoints Dutch national coach, who won multiple titles in Holland, Spain, Germany
- Ryan Giggs to be assistant manager
- Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout join as assistant coaches

Louis van Gaal will take over as manager of Manchester United from the 2014/15 season. He has signed a three-year contract.

Louis, 62, has managed at the top level of European football for over 20 years and in that time has won domestic titles and domestic cups in three countries, as well as the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup, an Intercontinental Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and domestic Super Cups in Holland and Germany.

He will take up his post after the FIFA World Cup, where he will manage the Dutch national team.

Ryan Giggs, English football's most decorated footballer and the United player with the most appearances in the club's history, has been appointed as assistant manager. Ryan took charge of the first team for the last four matches of the 2013/14 season.

Announcing the appointments, Ed Woodward said: "In Louis van Gaal, we have secured the services of one of the outstanding managers in the game today. He has achieved many things in his career to date and Old Trafford provides him with a fitting stage on which to write new chapters in the Manchester United story.

"Everyone is very excited about this new phase in the club's history. His track record of success in winning leagues and cups across Europe throughout his career makes him the perfect choice for us.

"People know him as a larger than life character but I have also been extremely impressed by his intelligence, thoughtful approach to the role and his diligence. I'm looking forward to working with him.

"I'm delighted that Louis has chosen Ryan as his assistant. Ryan's association with the club spans over two decades and his knowledge and stature will be of great use to Louis. In addition, this is a fantastic opportunity for Ryan to learn his trade alongside a world-class manager whose attacking instincts and belief in youth are tailor-made for Manchester United.”

Louis van Gaal said: "It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League. To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are. This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history."

Joel Glazer said: "I am delighted that Louis will be our next manager. He has an outstanding pedigree as a coach, both as a man who motivates his teams to win trophies and as someone who believes in giving young players a chance to prove their worth. I am sure he will make a big impression on the club, the players and the fans."

Avie Glazer said: "Louis joins us at an exciting time and has already communicated some great ideas for how the club can move forward. The board is right behind him in his plans and everyone here is already looking forward to the start of next season.”

Ryan Giggs said: "I am thrilled to have the chance to serve as assistant manager. Louis van Gaal is a world-class coach and I know I will learn a lot about coaching from being able to observe and contribute at such close quarters. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life and I'm delighted to be able to continue that relationship in such a key role."

Frans Hoek is the Netherlands' goalkeeping coach and has been instrumental in the development of keepers such as United legend Edwin van der Sar and Barcelona's Victor Valdes. He joins as assistant coach, specialising in goalkeeping.

Marcel Bout joins as assistant coach, specialising in opposition scouting, having previously worked for Bayern Munich, Telstar, AZ, FC Volendam and Feyenoord.

Giggs announces retirement

Today is a fantastic day for Manchester United. Louis van Gaal is a great appointment and let me begin by telling you how delighted I am to be working with someone of his calibre. His credentials are second to none and I’m positive the club will thrive under his leadership over the coming years.

I would also like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from professional football and embark upon a new and exciting chapter in my life, as assistant manager of Manchester United. I am immensely proud, honoured and fortunate to have represented the biggest club in the world 963 times and Wales 64 times. My dream was always to play for Manchester United, and although it saddens me to know I won’t be pulling on a United jersey again as a player, I have been lucky enough to have fulfilled that dream playing with some of the best players in the world, working under an incredible manager in Sir Alex Ferguson, and most of all, playing for the greatest fans in world football. I have always felt and appreciated your support.

I want to also give a huge thanks to the backroom staff and support teams we have and have had at Manchester United over the years. I would not have achieved the success I have without your continuing dedication and commitment to creating the best environment to enable the players to thrive. I would not have won 34 trophies in my career without you. I would also like to say a special thanks to my friends and family for all your love and support.

For me, today is a new chapter filled with many emotions - immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future. United fans I hope will share and echo my belief that the club, the management and owners, are doing everything they can to return this great club to where it belongs, and I hope to be there every step of the way. To the greatest fans in world football, thank you, I have loved every minute of playing for you and representing the biggest and best club in the world.

See you next season.
Ryan

Tribute to Ryan
United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had this to say about the retiring Reds legend and new assistant manager: "Ryan Giggs has been one of the greatest players ever to wear the red shirt of Manchester United. What he has achieved will never be equalled in the English game.

"In the way he played, he was the embodiment of a Manchester United player - fast, skilful, entertaining and determined to win by playing exciting football. His progress from the ranks of the famous Class of '92 to the most decorated player in this or any club's history is down to his hard work, ability and attitude.

"He is at the start of an exciting new chapter in his and the club's life but now is the right moment to reflect on the achievements of the finest British player of the last 25 years."

Paul Scholes: Manchester United need Bayern Munich's Toni Kroos

Manchester United need "five or six" new players to challenge in the Premier League, says club legend Paul Scholes.

"I'd bring in [Bayern Munich's] Toni Kroos, but United need five or six to get near the top," Scholes said in a blog for bookmaker Paddy Power.

Scholes also said new manager Louis van Gaal faces "a massive task".

The 39-year-old, who assisted interim boss Ryan Giggs in United's last four games, added he "did not expect" to be involved with the club next season.

In a wide-ranging article, Scholes also said:

Woodward failed to recruit the players the club needed last summer and he has "an awful lot to prove".
Former manager David Moyes' was a "little negative" during his time in charge at Manchester United, but questioned whether he was given enough time before being sacked 10 months into a six-year contract.
he was unsure if England manager Roy Hodgson had "the balls" to drop United striker Wayne Rooney.

Van Gaal is expected to be given funds to start a major revamp of the playing squad once his World Cup campaign with the Netherlands comes to an end and he is free to concentrate on his new role at Old Trafford.

Scholes believes that Germany international Kroos should be his first target, describing him as "a top-class central midfielder".

Kroos, whose contract expires with the Bundesliga champions at the end of next season, is rumoured to have already agreed a £20m switch to Manchester United.

Securing the 24-year-old would represent an early start to United's summer's transfer business, in contrast to last year when the club failed to follow up interest in then-Barcelona pair Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara with successful bids.

Everton's Marouane Fellaini was the only first-team summer signing, arriving for £27.5m, five weeks after a release clause set £4m lower expired.

"Edward Woodward has an awful lot to prove this time that he's good enough at his job," said Scholes.

"He has to bring the players in that the new manager wants. It's obvious that last year he didn't manage to do that. If he doesn't, we are not going to get anywhere near the top."

Paul Scholes believes Wayne Rooney could retire from football the time he's 32

Paul Scholes believes Wayne Rooney could retire from football by the time he's 32 due to the amount of football's he's played in his career.

Rooney made his professional debut in 2002 as a 16-year-old for boyhood club Everton and Scholes thinks his former Manchester United team-mate may hang up his boots in his early thirties due to the physical demand of the game.

In his first column for Paddy Power, Scholes said: 'Wayne might be a player who’d retire come 31 or 32, given the amount of football he’s played.

'Wayne’s peak may have been a lot younger than what we’d expect of footballers traditionally. Age 28 or 29 has been the normal "peak". With Wayne, it could have been when he scored 27 league goals in 2011-12 when he 26.

'He might be a player who’d retire come 31 or 32, given the amount of football he’s played.

'Ryan Giggs has been on the go for ages, but he adjusted his position. Can Wayne do the same? I don’t think Wayne will be able to play centre forward until he’s 34 or 35.'

United have been craving a creative midfielder since Scholes' retirement at the end of the 2012-13 season as the deposed Premier League champions finished seventh at the end of this campaign.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos but, under former Old Trafford boss David Moyes, Rooney dropped back into this role on frequent occasions.

Scholes believes the England star could play in the middle of the park, saying: 'He could play centre midfield, possibly, into his mid-thirties. He’s got all the ability to take over my old position at Manchester United.

'He has played some games there, but has never gone on an uninterrupted run. Whether he has the discipline to do it, right now I’m not sure.'

Should Rooney retire by the age of 32, his last games could potentially be for England at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Cardiff close in on Federico Macheda after Man Utd release

Cardiff City are expected to sign former Manchester United striker Federico Macheda on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old Italian striker is available after being released from Old Trafford.

Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coached Macheda in the reserve side at United, before he broke into the Reds first team as a 17-year-old.

Macheda spent last season on loan at Championship side Birmingham, scoring 10 goals in 18 appearances.

The former Lazio youth player became an instant Old Trafford hero when he scored a stunning injury-time winner on his debut against Aston Villa in April 2009.

But despite that early success, Macheda has struggled to claim a regular first-team place at Old Trafford in recent seasons and has spent time on loan in Germany with Stuttgart and in his native Italy with Sampdoria, plus spells with Queens Park Rangers and Doncaster Rovers.

Macheda is set to be Solskjaer's third signing this summer, with the Bluebirds having already recruited Spanish striker Javi Guerra, 32, and Austrian midfielder Guido Burgstaller, 25.

But Cardiff are playing down reports of a bid from Leicester City for striker Fraizer Campbell, with Solskjaer keen for the 26-year-old to remain at the Cardiff City stadium.

Campbell, signed from Sunderland in January 2013 for £650,000, has a release clause in his contract following Cardiff's relegation from the Premier League.
