I'm thinking of getting Canon PowerShot S3 IS.
Anyone has any comments on this camera?
Where can I get the best bargain in Klang Valley?

s2 and s3 have the same 12x optical zoom. only the megapixel is higher and it's black color.

you can get s3 in the range of 1700-1800 that comes with free 1gb SD, rechargeable batts, tripod, extra ori canon pouch, canon backpack and many other freebies.

Those things comes with the S2 also, and also S1 but it was different type of card last time. CF card. More or less they are the same. But better processing technology.

Some places in Sungei Wang sell cheaper. Below RM16++ for the Box set only excluding the cards and batteries. Thats so you can go look for your own cards and batteries+chargers that you might fancy.

Remember to budget around RM1800 for this so that you can get a 1GB card, 4pcs of 2500mah Nimh rechargeable batteries and a fast 2-4Hours charger.

Fujifilm S9500 has more options, a manual focus ring and better photo quality as its closer to a DSLR than the S3. Its a very good cam but relies on high ISO to reduce camera shakes(NO OPTICAL IMAGE STABILIZER) and is bigger+more expensive. But if you dun mind those, then its a better cam....

To me, you can even get cheaper price from any camera shop. Camera fair doesn't mean the camera is cheap. So, buyers will need to do enough survey if he/she wants to get the best deal biggrin.gif

Cons ar? For me that is:

i) only 6MP
ii) Video mode at high quality takes up mem too fast( 1 sec = -/+ 2MB)
iii) Pictures a bit soft in some situations.
iv) ISO400 quite noisy. ISO800 Cannot pakai
v) In MACRO mode, flash would result in lens barrel shadow
vi) LCD Brightness not enough in bright sunlight. Have to strain to see or use EVF to catch photos
vii) Cannot catch photos in widescreen like Panasonic cams(jealous). The built in 16:9 function for the S3 is just the normal photo but cropped.
viii) No Flash Hot Shoe like the Canon G6
ix) Body = plastic

This is based on my personal preference and views....

Does your tripod have a screw like fixture? If it does then it should be a standard fitting and should fit the S3. smile.gif

Hmpm.. i'm very confused!
I wanted canon s3 IS so much... i like it's design.. even the minor problems, i think i could compromise...
But, some other models seems to be quite good to...
If i want to compare..
Canon Powershot S3 IS
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7
Sony Cybershot DSC H5
which is the best???
Suggestion pls....

I wanted to experiment function, and play with it's features...

sigh. Today bring out S3 for Deepavali shooting, mount on tripod and the swivel gave way due to the weight of the cam + lense cos I didn't tighten the tripod screw properly. Luckily Camera didn't fall to the floor but the vertical swivel spun resulting in it hitting the extending neck bar causing a small dent on the battery cover sad.gif.

Its at times like these that you think about your investment. You get what you pay and if only that part was metal as opposed to plastic, it wouldn't even have left a mark.

But giving what you pay for it, the S3 is one of the best in its class less of course the sucky part that it takes WAY too much mem for high quality video recording... almost 1.5MB/sec....YES....per/sec... sad.gif

If you take photo and video mix, 1GB is not enough. At least 2GB. I ve experience this during holiday. Just 1 place visit will take 2gb+ of memory when shooting mix.

Yeah. I'd say if video recording is included, The S3IS Really eats up the mem in minutes. You'll need 2GB at least, and 4GB would be comfy and a dream for me. Half and hour of video recording with STEREO Sound.... wah..... smile.gif

Whats the price for 4GB now?

4GB is too expensive. My solution is get the data bank. The space can last for your long holiday.

Just wondering about the cost for 4GB cos I like everything to be in the cam and not have to cart along more stuff since I already bring a lense + adapter. Also I bring my lightweight notebook everywhere so a data-bank is not needed....

This was what I did the last time I went on holiday with my pss2is (sorry, I don't have the S3, but it's almost the same, just with less megapixel and smaller LCD), I had, at that time only 2pc 512mb card. I brought along my laptop. Luckily, I was staying at my relative's house, so no fear of losing expensive items there.

It won't take much space actually. I just keep it in my waist bag. I too bring along my lightweight notebook and some EXt Hdd. But most of the time I keep those thing in hotel. Just carry my camera and databank in my waist bag.

smile.gif I bought mine from fotokem back in Aug at RM1899 payable in 12 months installment via credit card. got 1gb card, microfibre cloth, fotokem membership card plus discount n free vouchers, orginal canon casing. I also opted to pay an additional surcharge for eatra 2 year warranty which i think is a good deal.

I like the camera, nice and sharp shots. A thing about tripod, do not save and spend on the flimsy ones, spend a little bit more and get the solid one. My uncle gave me his tripod which he bought from his trip to China (solid one and selling in China for less than RM100 i think) Sorry, guys I do not know where he got it.

I am looking to add on lens for my camera and also contemplating to sell mine off to buy EOS400D, it s a killer... ha ha ha.

Cheers..

You've been reading the back pages. Kudos.

I have been slightly bugged by the emergence of DIGIC III and the newer Cameras. 400D is very tempting, But I'll wait. It doesn't justify my purchase of the S3 6months back. sweat.gif

Why not just buy the camera only? You can buy your own prefer batteries, tripod or even bigger camera bag if you want. The prices above already included so called freebies.

Yeah. Get your own bag. Standard CANON leather bag sucks......

Personally I got myself another bigger bag with shoulder strap. In order to fit my S3 IS with the lens adapter and a few lenses of course. Not to forget the need for space to store extra batteries.

I put my original canon bag one side. It look bulky to me and less side pouch to keep others thing. Maybe will sell it away. I brought another one with vertical place the camera, got side pouch and strap to belt securely. I feel the camera when place vertical, can deploy fast.

When I got my S3....WHAT OPTION? tongue.gif

Envious of those who got 2 leather CANON pouches at the Midvalley Cam fair. But then with all the accessories put in, even that won't fit. In the end still have to hunt for a bigger bag.

I get a free gift bag from canon boot after I brought the S3 and show them the receipt. Got 2 choice. Either big camera bag or leather original pouches. Since I got the original puoches, I choose the big camera bag. It is soft camera bag which can fold up small when not in use. Not much useful for me. sad.gif Now I end up a lot of camera bag. doh.gif

Oh. the softmaterial type eh? I think should you have acessories for the S3, You'd best get those padded ones.

I just went to the nearest Carrefour's digital sections and grabed a sub RM50 Camera bag(padded) and it works like a charm......

Sorry to hear that. I don't notice an increase in sound of the lense when starting up or closing. Even zooming in and out produces the minimal amount of noise.

I went to Sg to look for Raynox as well back in July. In the end I couldn't find it. I contacted Raynox Aussie straight, i ahve the price list somewhere and they aren't cheap.

Macro lens and wide angle just use other brands besides raynox. But if you're looking for them specifically, over at Sim Lim square, they tend to carry MORE DSLR lenses than the add-ons for Prosumers like ours. Ask your bro to look for the bigger shops. There is also a BIG camera shop(Only one cam shop) over at Peninsula plaza Carries LOTS of camera acessories as well as a WHOLE range of Lowerpro products if you're interested..... By the amount of lenses and items they have there, you're bound to find some 3rd party lense for the S3IS.

BUT BEWARE! I brought my camera to SG when I got my lenses. Have to PERSONALLY TEST each lense to make sure it works cos NOT ALL DOES. Even then, I purchased a 2.0X telephoto which the S3 could not focus at Max tele.

Oh, I never knew there was a distributor there. Anyway, I've found the email they replied me. The price list goes like this in case you were looking for the same lenses as I was: All in Aussie $$

DCR2020PRO $387.50 ex GST.
HD7000PRO $31.75 ex GST.
DCR250 $93.75 ex GST.
MSN202 $137.50 ex GST.
RB52S5 $137.50 ex GST.

The Shipping costs depends on what we send to you as it goes off the weight and size of the box.
If you put your order through with payment, it should take 2-4 working days.

Kind Regards,

Toni.

I hope this give your a rought estimate of the prices. The DCR2020PRO is the 2.2X telephoto. The others are not super-expensive as Canon now to think of it. Canon selling 1.5XTele and 0.7X Wide each for almost RM500 here..... doh.gif

Anyway you DCR7900ZD ain't cheap as well. Almost RM1K(USD$224.22).

the S3 movie uses the Motion-JPEG codec, popularly known as mjpg as its 4cc code. in order to play it, you need to install window's lastest directx or alternatively, you can go to www.free-codecs.com and use the search function to search of mjpg codecs.

Another alternative is to install FFDshow. these will provide the neccessary codecs for you to play the movie.

you however, do not need any audio codecs as the audio recorded is in PCM mode. It is an uncompressed format, which results in the movie files' gigantic size.

For smooth playing, I would suggest you record the movie in its best option, ie 30fps @ 640x480. shooting at 15 fps will result in a somewhat jerky video, as normal video needs about 25 (pal) to 29.97 (ntsc) fps for smooth motion. For easy storage of the movies, I usually convert them to xvid video and mp3 audio, which greatly reduces the size of the movie and still able to retain good audio video quality. Also, you could choose to just convert the movie to uncompressed formats for both the video and audio. Guranteed Adobe Premiere will be able to detect the movie.

There are free video conversion/editing softwares such as Virtualdub (which supports only .avi files) and VirtualdubMod (supports a wider range of file formats such as mkv and ogg/ogm) They are also freely available from the site mentioned above.

As for dslrs, the S3 has all the functions of a dslr, with only a few exceptions. The S3 has no interchangable lens and the photo quality if compared to dslr, not as good.
For dslr like functions, turn the dail to TV for shutter priority, AV for aperture priority, M for full manual. There's a button beside the lens that says MF. That will switch your camera to manual focus mode, meaning you get to adjust the focusing with the directional pad. Read it up on the manual.
I hope this helps.

MPEG Video Wizard DVD is the most powerful editor that can directly edit most of the format without conversion first, give it a try.

MPEG Video Wizard DVD is the most powerful editor that can directly edit most of the format without conversion first, give it a try.
Nice one. From the spec & screen shot it seem straight forward, but at price tag of U$99.00 I'll stick to VirtualDub & flaskmpeg

S3 of course brows.gif

You'd probably need the 1GB SD card cause the card included with the camera is only 16MB, which is only 4 pictures at the highest resolution. And the bag is a must too in my opinion, gotta protect your baby eh thumbup.gif

You mean you want the G7 over the S3 just because it has more megapixels? If you're just a casual shooter you don't need that much megapixels. Megapixels only allows you to print larger photos. More mp doesn't mean better quality. IN CASE you didn't know wink.gif

Oh. Well, the standard Leather bag was supposed to come with the Camera. I called CANON Malaysia to find out. But the shops try to earn extra $$ by seperating it from the Cam. Then they sell it for between RM40-60 I think.....
If you not gonna expand the camera in terms of getting new acessories then go ahead and get the standard leather bag.

There are 2 types I've seen. 1 is pure black with metal Canon emblem and another nicer looking one which is brownish in colour and has a mesh compartment on it. Try to get that one.....

Standard one that came with the cam.

for me, more Megapixel and DIGIC III (with the new multipoint face priority focus feature) is already good enuff for casual shooter like me to do post photo editing. (apart from the ultrazoom, IS and stereo video recording in S3.. somehow i still can't feel the urge as i already owned a A540, unless someone let go at very very cheap price la.. hehe)

sengkiat's deal is good, but he's from Melaka... and the price also on the steep side (no offence ok..) u could get the similar package (minus the canon backpack) at around 1.6k (check out BE's price at sg wang)

cheers.

p/s: since this is a S3's thread.. i think let's stick to the S3

Go easy on the cam.

What I did is I got something like a small DSLR Bag and store the S3IS inside with the lens adapter always on. The remaining space is for the acessories and cables. I got a cheapo bag from Carrefour for this. Makes good practise before stepping up to DSLR and also protects the cam from knocks better than the ori pouch. Attaching my lenses are also faster as the lens adapter is on all the time.... sweat.gif

Well the lense hood came as a set with the Original CANON 58mm lense adapter set(LAH-DC20). I think lensemate doesn't include this.

Well the lense hood came as a set with the Original CANON 58mm lense adapter set(LAH-DC20). I think lensemate doesn't include this.
*

ya, u r right, lensmate didnt include this shakehead.gif You still can put on the filter after that? Btw, thanks for the photo.

No problem. Just helping what I can.

Your lensemate adapter is aluminum 52mm ring right? You probably have to look for 3rd party 52mm lens hood cos the Original Canon one is on the 58mm thread.

s3 noneed macro closeup lens. its own lens can do 0 cm macro, ie place your subject directly on the lens, still can focus on it.

Same here icon_rolleyes.gif . We need them +power macro lenses to shoot macro from afar. If you ask me, 0cm is just a gimmick and is not effective cos when you get THAT Close, there is hardly enough light to take the pic. Also these Macro lenses have magnification power so you get more closeups. thumbup.gif

The one I got was from Vitacon. Unfortunatly theres barrel distortion at the sides and maybe does not work as well as the original S3IS macro lense (500D)... whistling.gif

Kevinyong, it can't be hung on the waist as it does not have anything for your belt or clip to go thru. Its shoulders all the way.

I got it at the Electronics section of Carrefour Batu Pahat(yeah, not KL tongue.gif). Try the ones in KL....Subang Etc.... which have bigger electronic sections than the one here.

dai kor...i think the AEL and auto bracket is different...
the auto bracket is used to set and capture 3 pic with different exposure. the AEL is to let u lock the exposure and/or with the focus as well.

normally the AEL used with the A mode. where u set the aperature and let the cam belance the exposure. once u had see the right exposure than lock it. than re-compose ur pic the cam will auto adjust ur shutter speed to balance with exposure that u had lock.

I think you can add any filter to the conversion lens as long as it's 58mm.

This happens because Canon S3 chose to write the ISO settings without following the normal standard.

To view the real ISO, you have to use their bloody zoombrowser program. Even with that, the pics shot with Auto mode will still see "Auto" written.

WTA,
do any of you guys have focusing trouble with the S3 IS? I tried one at the Canon road show in MV but found that the cam had trouble locking focus. At one point it locked focus but everything was blur on the LCD.

In comparison to my old Olympus C-730 and my friend's S1 IS, this is quite bad.

So, just wanted to ask if any of you all have been affected by this as it could have been that I was playing with a broken demo unit.

If you get original Canon adapter and 3rd party lenses, maybe budget around RM500 extra. IF you want to get the Ori Canon Lenses then its RM400+ For the Wideconverter lense and the same price for the teleconverter lense. Filters(CPL or UV) would cost you less than RM100 each. icon_rolleyes.gif

whoa. sweat.gif kinda expensive also. put aside the those expensive converter lenses first. maybe later... tongue.gif

i'm interested in having filters on the s3is. do i need the lens adapter to fix those filters on?

i've read about lensmate s3is adapter. what's the difference between a 52mm and a 58mm? more choises of lens? seems like the bigger one is slightly more expensive.

thanks.

Yes, You will need the lens adapter before you can attach anything....52mm and 58mm are the size difference for the lens's thread. Bigger mm and it might be more expensive.

If you read their FAQ here,
QUOTE
8. Which adapter should I buy?
If you're only using filters, a sun hood, a macro lens, or any of the wide converters tested here (except the Canon WC-DC58A .75x), get the 52mm adapter.  You can combine a hood and one filter (place the hood on the adapter first, then the filter to avoid vignetting) of the 52mm size without vignetting.  If you're using the Canon converters or already have 58mm filters or accessories, get the 58mm adapter.

I'm using 52mm with UV and Polarizer filter, still searching for the right and cheaper converter lenses tongue.gif

For Reon's pic, you can take but the bg wouldn't be THAT blur since the biggest aperture you can go is only 2.7.

I don't see why the S3IS cannot take those kind of photo. There is not much different the S3 with DSLR for normal user. Just limited by our imaginative and creative.

i think s3IS will not be able to capture something like the posted photos. like the DOF as in dSLR. (unless u customize ur s3is adapter ring to use bigger lense like alot of photofreaks did)

it's different hardware and technology la. aperture is one thing. the image sensor is the main point about DSLR. bigger sensor produce better quality, lower noise and shallower DOF.. and what's more? higher ISO with same noise. generally, most of the DSLR's sensors are about 23x16mm in size.. what's the sensor size of S3IS? 1/2.5" = around 5.76mm x 4.29mm.

guys, get real. the hardware speaks itself. u might get something 'look-alike' but do check out the imagine quality produced by dSLR and compare to a pro-sumer, it's precisely as per stated in the hardware specs.

just my 2 cents. sorry man.. not to put ice on ur head.. just to share constructive view for those potential S3IS buyers as well as dSLR buyer. atleast they know what they would be getting before they made up their mind to purchase one.

i love S3IS too! but to compare it with a dSLR... it's different category la. rite?

Is there any technique to overcome this DOF on S3IS? Maybe got other way to do. Why need that high ISO to take a picture? Any ISO over 400, I consider poor quality picture. I use it only in desperate situation. Even DSLR can shoot a better picture in high ISO, but the noise is still there. I think everybody will try to avoid it.
I m not good in picture taken neither camera technique, but I think many technique nowaday can overcome the camera shortage function. The DLSR is still the best for exthausit (eh..how to spell that huh) or amateur maybe. That I don't deny it. thumbup.gif

i think the picture editing destroyed the quality of the picture. i believe the original file is much sharper than this. but anyway, good try there.

here are more samples. pictures taken in low light (fluoroscent) condition, ISO 100, aperture 2.7, super macro mode

Yeah, you're right. I did some sharpening cause I didn't realize the bugs were out of focus. LCD screens are deceiving >_<

Edit: I just checked the original image and it's noisier than the edited one. Forgot to mention I used Noiseware for the edited picture. tongue.gif

Take daylight macro pics so thats its less dependent on external lightsource from Equipments. If you want to test the 0cm - 1cm MACRO with flash then you'll need a slave flash.

There's a night scene mode on the mode dial.

Alternatively, you can adjust the shutter speed, iso and aperture.

0cm macro only works when the subject is lit from the back. say, like taking a transparent slide/paper from a projector.

if we stick too close to the subject, there will be a nasty shadow like darren said. in fact you can see some slight shadow at the bottom of each picture; posted above.

I think he likes aeroplanes cos hoongji bro is a pilot in training....Did I get that right?

I like taking macros. But with this cam, I do it in bright sunlight or when lit with a lamp or a torch. Have been putting off the purchase of the Canon Slave flash to limit my expendature on this prosumer cam. Have to start looking around for 3rd party brands to play with.

The slave flash like the Canon one going for RM300+ has an attachment at the bottom that you screw on underneath the cam. Then you can postiion your slave flash at the side of the cam or slightly in front to help with the barrel shadow.

Hey guys. My sister's going to Singapore on Monday so I'm asking her to help me get the 58mm lens adapter and possibly some filters. Was thinking if I should get a circular polarizer and grey graduated filter? If so, what brand should I get? Thanks.

The thing is, colour accent only accents one colour if I'm not mistaken, and colour swap merely swaps one colour for another.

Since the person you're photographing has many colours, skin tones, clothes, hair etc etc you can't colour accent/colour swap it.

I think. smile.gif

If you wanna adjust it, just select the subject then inverse the selection (Ctrl+Alt+I) or Select>Inverse. Then just convert it to B&W whatever method you like. smile.gif

yes u may. U must adjust the shooting mode to either program ae mode, shutter speed priority ae, manual or stitch assist mode, u can adjust the color into black n white, sepia, etc. Even i can do color swap tongue.gif will do some shooting later after i finish my homework.

budget constraint mah... anyway, i've seen reviews and forums in dpreview. s2is and s3is is just mere megapixel and cosmetic change. sorry my bad. it's lensmate 52mm adapter. it cost me RM1150 still got 2 years warranty from shop.

but i do find some cons in that camera....
- ISO800 noise is quite bad
- the batteries are making the camera real heavy
- the lens cap can be quite loose

Agree with the points you stated. ISO400 for me is the MAX i would push for. Also the batteries tend to get heavier as you get higher capacity ones. Im using 2700 ones but can't really tell the difference from my 2500s but heavier makes it steadier tongue.gif. Lens cap is so pissing off at times. If you attach it then it'll just get in the way. With the lens adapter on at all times now I don't use the lense cap..... laugh.gif

it's too near for a macro mode. i mean there are 2 macro mode. one is normal macro another one is super macro mode. try holding the macro button to change to super macro mode. you try to half press shutter button for it to autofocus again and again until u got a clear focus on ur subject and snap. else, you can try manual focus.

Sure it can. Other cameras are able to....but not many DC in the market records video clips in stereo. But this comes at a price. The files are freakin huge. You'll need a big storage card.....

S3 IS vs G7 = Winner???

Actually i got S3 IS, happy with 12x zoom, but 6mp make me dissapointed. G7 with 10mp, digicIII, but only 7x zoom. Market strategy i think.

For me, I don't need 10MP. wink.gif

Most of the pics taken by S3 IS, printed using Canon ip4200, A4 size. So do u think A4 size printing quality become better if using 10mp camera (G7)?

I agree with you. Im the same and don't require that huge a megapixel. Unless im in advertising of course. 6mp for an A4 size is just nice. In fact I think I wan't to develope some this coming Christmas including some Wide photos for framing. smile.gif

As for the grip. I do feel that the S3IS has a deeper grip which is good for manly hands. But you cannot compare build quality with the G7 which is superb. When I grip tightly on my plastic S3IS, The plastic depresses/flexes a little. Maybe Im too strong for my camera. doh.gif

G7 Is modeleled old style like those Leica cameras. But thats up to personal taste..... thumbup.gif

Ok, thanks for ur opinion. Then how about video recording quality? G7 with 1024x800 (max 16fps) and S3 IS with 640x480 resolution? For me 1024x800 OK but 15fps KO. Haha. Last question, G7 can record video clip in stereo?

Ok, thanks for ur opinion. Then how about video recording quality? G7 with 1024x800 (max 16fps) and S3 IS with 640x480 resolution? For me 1024x800 OK but 15fps KO. Haha. Last question, G7 can record video clip in stereo?
*
I don't think so.

This makes the S3 IS unique being a super-zoom and able to record in Stereo at 30fps. I dont see much difference when recording at 60fps on the 320x240 resolution. Would be nice if it was like the Pana FZ-50 being able to record in widescreen format. Would look great on my Lappie..... cool2.gif

I have been asked to become the photographer for a wedding engagement. Need tips, I have no idea what kind of shots to take. Should I play safe and go with "potrait" or "P" or auto? Also need help on the posing, I have no idea what kind of posing should I ask them to do....

Well, if you're not going to be too far from your Subjects. Sometimes big weddings have to take a huge group of ppl altogether uncles, aunties, grannies and grandpas not forgetting the in-laws. Unless you have wide-angle, you're probably going to back up quite a bit to get them all in frame. If there's enough light to highlight everyone then there shouldn't be a problem. S3IS max-flash level quite strong sweat.gif .

Slave flash can get cheaper than RM400. One of the Forumers here using a 3rd party slave flash which he had mentioned before to us. But really have to dig back 40pages I think to find. I Think its in the Canon Users thread and not this one. IIRC it was around RM200+ and using AA BAtteries thumbup.gif unlike Canon's Ori slave for the S3IS which uses those fat lithium batts which needs replacing after a while of usage. shakehead.gif

Natural/catch light shots, candid shots, detail shots, showcasing important ppl shots, group shots. list goes on. no hard and fast rules on an event like a wedding.

If you can do all of it in the wedding , you are great.

Cheers good luck

I'm not really worried at the flash power, rarely use it, too strong. I think on default settings would be enough.

Rather than sugar paper, find adhesive selotape, works the same way

Anybody here wanna sell their S3? Im interested in getting one.

Anyway, i would like to ask whether the S3 is capable of shooting photos, like portrait photo with a low depth of field? Can the aperture be big enough to enable the camera to take these kind of photos?

I also read reviews about the camera producing pictures with lots of noise when used in ISO 800. Can the noise be reduced by reducing the aperture size?

Finally, are all the aperture, shutter and ISO settings available for all level of zoom?

Thanks! smile.gif

Low depth field, you need a lense for that. The potrait mode has quite high depth of field.
Reduce ISO, thats all. Sure you can reduce aperture size, but I don't think that will work. I use ISO 100/200 most of the time.

Yes, all levels of zoom, not sure about digital though. Go to imaging-review.com and read that review. Its a deep review.

Wedding photographers mostly use program mode only. Cause I think you have to catch the important events and you won't have time to adjust the settings.

Well its a success and I adjust the aperture while retaining the ISO 200 in quite not well lit location.

All the ISO and shutter speed settings are available from wide-angle to telephoto zoom.
As for the aperture, you can use f2.7 when the zoom is at the wide end and can only go as big as f3.2 when it's at full telephoto.

Uh, making the aperture smaller won't help with the noise levels because the noise levels depend on the sensor. The aperture just changes the lens element.

If I'm talking bull please correct me. Thanks smile.gif

Hey guys, just got the S3 IS today. Finally got it after reading so many forum threads, user reviews, dpreviews.com, and went thru countless comparisons with the Sony H5 and the Panasonic FZ7.

Taken a few shots with it but definitely need time to learn around the workings of the camera. Would have preferred a larger LCD screen though (which is why I considered the Sony H5) but alas, battery life more important smile.gif

Hope to learn more from you guys.

Haha yeah. The H5 did look good though, saw it on display but read everywhere that the LCD screen is not all that great.

Going off to Kuching this weekend, so the S3 will come in handy.

the replacement is for the fault that they used SOny CCD -- the faulty one

and that goes for alll the Powershot series manufactured at that time ...
Canon giving the whole lot a free replacemet with new Units.

I got my A85 replaced with A530, while waiting for it I gone out and bought a S3Is ... I actually ask if they can replace the A85 with something else like ... tele or wide converter or even the Slave Flash.. tongue.gif but of course cannot lerr..

Tripod is a must for all cameras to start with. Not only for shooting stability but for the more common timer mode when there are NO other photographers.....

Like Darren, I can still go pretty slow without using a tripod but it all boils down to practise and how you stabilize your arms. Also I use a small beenie bag to counter minor shakes....

Ixus with tripod, can barely see the camera tongue.gif So small.... the tripod head itself overshadows the cam.....

gorrilapod is so tempting..... USD31 with shipping is a nice price as well... Is it able to bend well and stay in that particular position stable?

I am thinking of selling my Canon S3 for a reasonable price. Still very new, bought it a couple of months ago. Need the cash is the reason for sale. Thought that in this topic, there might be someone who is interested in it before I post the [WTS] post in the garage sales.

How much??

Im using 3rd party Wide-angle lense 0.45X. Much cheaper than the ori Canon for the S3IS but slightly heavy...Brand = Vitacon, made of Titanium....Ori Canon would be some type of Hard shell plastic..... But costs more than RM400. Lense adapter for S3IS from Canon is RM100 - RM150 range....

i've always been thinking the effects of bokeh. can it be done with s2 or s3? blur alot or blur abit only?

i have yet to try to snap potrait pic with bokeh. what is the best setting to have good bokeh? what i know is need to have large aperture/small f-stop. how about the focal length, will zoom in yield better bokeh result?

Longer focal length (zoom) = more background blur.

Eg.

f2.8 300mm will result in a more blur background than f2.8 150mm.

In Malaysia, the Wide lense can cost anything from RM200 - RM600.... But the Ori Canon one had the least distortion....

The only external flash you can attach to the Canon S3IS is the slave flash vis the tripod mount like what Darren said. There is no hotshoe unlike the G7 which does :

Yup it does. Sensor triggers the minute it detects your main camera flashes.

It will look more out of place with the S3 IS cos the camera body is black. Tried it at the shops already... but there are other 3rd party models which are cheaper and run on AA batteries unlike this which runs on lithium which is expensive.....

nope, i din use any extra item. just the S3 IS itself

to get blur effect

1. Use Super Makro (make sure the background is far from the object)
2. Use 12x Optical Zoom, use makro mode, aperture F3.5 iinm

Hi Ganz.
Izit u bought it during the Canon Digital Camera Fair 2004 at KLCC? Dealer is Fotoflash right? The warranty is free extended to 3 years. And i sent a email to canon yesterday, received a call from canon this morning, tell me send it to fotoflash to claim warranty.

Yeah.... Good practise before stepping up to DSLR. Also on Sunny days, the LCD Isn't bright enough, so you're better off composing your shot viewing the EVF..... wink.gif

Yup.... what you say is true and important for conserving batteries. But I still feel a bit weird taking pics using the evf with such a short lens. I feel more comfy when I attach my converter + Filter + Wide/Tele converter. At least my lens barrel is longer like a true DSLR...... But cannot fight ler.... sweat.gif

Safe bettery juice cos you don;t have to power your swivel LCD mah......

Anyway, so far I know only 2 available adapter for S3 IS. One is the original CANON one which is LAH-DC20 and another from "lensmate". The CANON adapter is on a 58mm thread and the Lensmate is a 52mm IINM..... sweat.gif

for watever device that is.. i'm sure it is best to take out the battery if not using for a long period of time.. battery may leak and some other reasons too.. correct me if i'm wrong..

i was wondering if there are any fisheye lens adapter for s3? i was told that wide lens is similar to fisheye.. I actually thought wide lens has got a wider view but not distorted unlike the fisheye.. i'm really curious.. enlighten me bout it.. coz i really like fisheye images..

i prefer original fisheye images than photoshop's spherize..

If you talking about the Canon SLAVE flash. Yes, its wireless. Its triggered when its sensor detects a burst of light from you cam flash, and fires its own as well. As long as your cam is in the same room as the flash, it should be able to trigger when your cam's flash fires.

If they DO release an S4 IS. It better be a major step up from the S3IS. Hate to see the case like when the S3 IS was just a MINOR improvement over the S2 IS.

will the price for S3 goes down with S4 introduction or they'll just discontinue the S3 production?

If there's a major improvement for S4 as julchin would have wanted, then there's a fat chance they'll continue selling S3 as S4 will be on a diff class alredy smile.gif

Mind to ask, DSLR is it the what D40 or EOS30 model? This is for professional use and yet are so big and heavy. Is it convenience to use?

out of question..

i f we comparing dslr function with prosumer.(s3/s4) than i think it kind of not fair..

i still treasure the functionality of video mode with my s3 smile.gif), live view with the tilting angle and zoom factor..

quality wise? well.. most.. i think all of my pictures print with 4R size..
the only issue. is night/ low light photo.. it ok.. but not up to dslr with prime lense quality or bounce flash.. muahahhaha

I am not selling my S3 anytime soon. Maybe until kaput or I can exhaust all the functions, but so far I don't think so.

q1 - S1 .. someone looking for it at garage sale.. instead.. pray for ur s1 to kaput then exchange it s3 for free like i do.. muahahhha

q2- yearh it true.. why everybody tend to divert the topic into d40 and 350D?? way out of league for this camera...

q3 - about s3.. i'm still busy right now.. don't no when it going to end.. but i love to start with the DIY stuff.. smile.gif yesterday i check LAH for s3 it cost me RM160.. i know there is third party lense hood but dunno where to find it.. kekekek

malaysian people got lots of oney i think.. easily grab the dslr.. kekeke left out prosumer

LAH hoodset at RM160 very expensive!!!!!!!!!!!

The retail price for the hoodset is RM150 only not yet discount somemore!!!!!

My advice get the ori Canon hoodset. It more compatible than using third party lens hood.

Last time I got mine at RM140 at Canon The Curve. You need to get a 58mm lens filter & a 58mm lens cap as well. I think all together is about RM220.

I got my LAH-DC20 for the S3 for RM120, But its at SImLIM Singapore. I couldn't believe the prices here, even the Canon Tele and Wide converters were extremely expensive here. Singapore is RM100 cheaper at least......

I'll probably switch to a DSLR but will keep the S3 for its Video Recording and tele features....

You can get them at CANON Stores like the one at Midvalley Megamall. It might be cheaper if you head on to camera shops but Im not too sure how much cheaper. Last I checked, the RRP for Wide and Tele were RM430 - RM490 each.

If you are making a trip to Singapore, You can get them Much cheaper. Last I was quoted SGD$160 which is RM360 here for the Ori Canon Ones. Or you could get a 3rd party Lense for around SGD$ 60 -120. I did the latter..... smile.gif. Cost me SGD$120 For Wide+Macro combo.....

I think quite a few users still here. Those like me who haven't shifted to DSLRs yet. But also many EXusers.....

Since its been a while since ppl posted Pics, I think I'll just share one.

Took this pic in Penang during CNY. Too bad Noise was evident at ISO400. I regret not bringing my tripod for the Sunset pics that day..... sad.gif Didn't do justice to the beauty of the sky that evening.....

Anyway, I think if you guys wanna spend on accessories, a lense adapter+ hood and probably a Macro and a Wide lense would be enough. Fisheye and the rest are best left for DSLRs. But the ULTIMATE thing that HAS to be purchased are CPL or UV Filters with the former being the most usefull.... thumbup.gif

Yup icon_idea.gif

After you put the lens adapter with the filter then put on the lens hood your photo will get block from the four corner of the edge. If without the lens filter it will solve the problem hmm.gif or get you can get a zoom lens as your filter that will cost you RM399 rclxub.gif

YES YOU CAN. CPL filter is the next logical step. I purchased Wide, Macro and Tele lenses for my S3 IS from Singapore, and in the end, found out that only the WIDE would work well with the least distortion. My tele(2.0x) is practically sleeping in its box. The best tele(100% compatible) is the one made by CANON themselves exclusively for the S3IS. 3rd party Teles will be at best 80% compatible. But CANON's are darn expensive with the price hovering above RM450.... cry.gif

Yes, The edges would be blacked out by the lense hood, even the ori CANON one (LAH-DC20) once you've attached a UV/CPL filter which sucks.

1. It's pretty good.
2. Yes.
3. This camera is a consumer-type camera.. it has a smaller sensor size and the mechanism in which the picture is taken blablabla is different from a dSLR.

If you get the 52mm one, you MIGHT have to order it from online sites but the CANON 58mm one is readily available in KL/Selangor. Besides that, the 52mm lensmate will require 52mm lenses which are cheaper I think. Other differences are that the lensemate is made of metal wherelse the CANON is some sort of plastic.

i'm thinking the same one.. but maybe with other slave flash... (cost i think).. but i only gonna start my diy soon after completing my job at pekan pahang...

from the net sources, it is a very pretty good lighting system to have... plus they also show few prototype of tthe bracket..

kevin.. which ring are you refer to? the manual focus ring? for canon.. u still can use the manual focus,, but very difficult one to focus on..
