Any Sigma 35mm F1.4 A owner here?
How is your lens performing straight out of box?

Today went to lowyat and try a unit.
I didn't bring my d700 so the shop borrowed a d5200.
At f/1.4 it was kinda oof, even at f/2...centre is still oof.
worse than the 50mm 1.8E I had. shakehead.gif

Asked whether got another unit, that ah beng gave an annoyed face.
Selling 3rd party lens but don't know 3rd party lenses famous issues doh.gif

Now have to try with other sellers.
Luckily didn't buy online.

Guys, I'm going to buy my first dslr, Nikon D3300, did some survey around the city, can help me to decide which place to buy? icon_question.gif

Nikon store KLCC: RM 2198 (3 years warranty, 8gb sd card, Nikon dslr bag and N-70 tripod)
Fotokem: RM 1999 (1 year warranty, 8gb sd card and Nikon dslr bag)
Harvey Norman: RM 1950 (1 year warranty, 8gb sd card and Nikon dslr bag)
J-one (AmCorp Mall): RM 1920 (1 year warranty, 8gb sd card, Nikon dslr bag, screen protector and a tripod that is not so compatible with dslr?)
DC Pro Cam (AmCorp Mall): RM1900 (1 year warranty, 8gb sd card and Nikon dslr bag)

The Nikon KLCC one looks tempting to me because of the extra 2 years warranty, the Nikon tripod and a peace of mind that everything is going to be 100% original. So I want to ask does the extra 2 years warranty worth the money? Does a Nikon dslr break down easily within 1-3 years? I couldn't find any information about the N-70 tripod on Nikon's website. Is it a good tripod?

Btw, I'm thinking of buying a messenger bag, Think Tank Urban Disguise 60 V2.0 bag for my dslr, laptop, chargers, documents and books. J-one quoted RM590. Is it too overkill for such a cheapo entry level dslr? unsure.gif

In the meantime, any D3300 user around here? How does this camera compare to its competitors? Can share your experience in shooting family, pet photos, etc and whether it's good enough for a user coming from Ipad camera like me? rolleyes.gif

Welcome welcome~

The D3300 is definitely up to the task nod.gif
Can consider the D3200 and D5200 as well if you want, should be cheaper, without too much difference in performance thumbup.gif
Personally I've never seen any DSLRs breakdown within 3 years hmm.gif Most are very well built... and if you are really unlucky to get a lemon unit, you should be able to notice the faults within the 1st few weeks, which is still within the 1 year warranty period icon_rolleyes.gif

Perhaps you can try and ask "digitalfm14" in garage sales and also bro Yannick here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Yannick-Came...7834827?fref=ts
I buy everything from Yannick because of his good service thumbup.gif

As for the bag, I think its too expensive for that DSLR, you could buy a 50mm prime lens already for that price! laugh.gif
I don't think you need to spend so much on the bag, around RM100-200 already can get a great one icon_rolleyes.gif

So I did another research on the net and found out that the extra 2 years warranty is worth around RM300 in US...
http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/...-(2-Years).html

I will probably be buying my first dslr, D3300 at Nikon Store KLCC. Anything to watch out for when buying? Btw, Think Tank bag really looks very nice and pro and look more like a business bag than a camera bag compared to other camera brands. rclxm9.gif

Do you really need the 3 year warranty? Only if you're really unlucky (or careless) you'll encounter problems with a new camera. Might as well take the best deal from the other options, save a little money at least and get yourself a tripod + bag.

If you have already set your eyes on the deal from KLCC, then just go for it nod.gif

Skills and your photos will decide whether you are pro or not, not your bag and gears laugh.gif
Most people started off very enthusiastically, buying expensive and the most recent stuffs, then after a few months they lose interest and shelf everything, which is sad sad.gif
Unless if you are very sure you are interested, don't spend too much on your 1st DSLR and accessories icon_rolleyes.gif

If not mistaken Fotokem you could request for warranty extension to 3 years... and that Nikon store KLCC is owned by Fotokem isn't it? So should be the same 3 years warranty, 1 year by Nikon 2 years by third party.

Dell IPS monitor are pretty good, quite close to MBP retina or 27'' iMac screens.
They got pretty similar results too (sRGB, Adobe RGB range) when I calibrate them with spyder.

Regardless, it's best to calibrate all screens even if they're Mac LCD.

I'm a D3200 user and I get to play around D3300.

Let me share my price of my D3200, i got mine at a huge discounted price @Rm1799 around Aug 2013 along with 3 8gb c10 SD, 1 standard bag and 3 years warranty(Nikon 1, fotokem 2) & a free phone! Lucky Draw rclxms.gif
Anyway, some may say aiya, fotokem warranty no use one la... but for me, nikon store Rm2198 for D3300 w/ 3 years warranty is totally worth it. just for 1 reason, peace of mind. At least I got covered for any issue within the 3 years. All electronics most important is warranty because there is a failure rate~(touch wood).. but peace of mind matters to me la.

NEVER GET CHEATED BY THE FREE TRIPOD! Those are crap! exchange for a SD card or whatever filter or strap or stuffs.. save some budget to get a REAL tripod(Rm300 ish for entry).. Trust me, experience first hand my DSLR almost crash to the solid ground. rclxub.gif

I used to think to buy a cool ass bag for my camera to carry around and snap photo like a pro.. as advertised in Youtube. But after 8 months owning a DSLR.. meh, unless I'm super got feel today, I won't be carry that heavy dslr. For beginner without much gear, just buy a camera insert and throw into any bagpack of yours. I'm using Crumpler Haven L for my 3 lens, body, 4 memory cards, cleaning kit & charger and cable. So for any shooting now or travel, I just grab the whole thing and throw inside my bag and off to go. http://www.crumpler.com/us/haven-l

Like any sifu here will said, camera brand doesn't matter.. Well it does matter for lens choice and photo quality and price. but you won't go wrong with any brand.. just you want to be either the hipster Nikon or Pop-culture Canon or tech Sony kind of guy.. haha

D3300 is good enough for family photo, pets and such..

Oh ya, one thing good about Nikon is the interface is good nod.gif .. for beginner, it is super friendly to get to know about exposure, shutter speed, aperture and stuffs ~

I got the crumpler haven(m) too. Makes it really convenient for me to just bring along any bag. Camera bags should be functional and inconspicuous.

Recently got a mindshift panorama 180 backpack. Really convenient, especially for travel photography. Quick access to your camera while having both straps on.
