oh,
u already into fb ipoh foldies.didnt notice that,sorry my bad laugh.gif .
shah alam also can maa,..just start 1st then the crowd will come later.we all start in a small group 1st,then people will notice until now icon_rolleyes.gif

btw,
the best and effective upgrade is ur crank.from 6speed u can get 12speed or 18speed only from crank.but if u upgrade only the casette,u only get from 6 to 10 max...so why bother to get the casette?

http://www.bicyclebuysell.com/item/254652/...-hybrid-folding
the link above sell crank for only rm70.u can get 18speed with the crank.for me its worth it lah event without fd,its not a big matter to me.i already using shimano sora 50/34 on my vybe without fd.already achieve to climb bukit berapit (up north and down south) without "sorong" the bike with those cranks (on the way to taiping with 50-32 and on the way back cannot tahan already with gear setup 34-21)

p/s :- sorry,i didnt mean for show off,but its a good & true fact when upgrading ur crank will give u better gearings thumbup.gif

so crankset - 52-42-30 --bout size length 170mm? can fit most BB rite?
w/o FD & shifter. means how to change front gear during ride?

wat if. - change crankset -rm70 assume can fit my bb no extra etc
then FD & shifter -rm100
cable housing RM40? so total will be around RM200 = 18speed ../(52t is the most thing i want)
------retain my current 6 speed freewheel cassette
bout cassette -they re 2 type rite? if >9speed -need to change hub?

step down ur foot, and get dirty fingers by pick the chain and put what crank u want to use.i used sora 175mm and still good.this is normal bb cranks and can fit almost all folding bike accept dahon clinch that use bb30

shifter come in pair, its hard to find that sell in separate.u need to consider also fd hanger to fit the fd unless u make a hanger urself by welding it laugh.gif

oh ya,
dont forget to get a new chain to support the bigger crank! sweat.gif

yap, below 8 speed are skrew in type of cassette.unless u can find wheelset cheap cheap...

try to see it clearly.front bike is my dahon vybe and at the back is dahon speed p8
see my crank,no fd coz a bit tight to put hanger for the fd icon_idea.gif

to tell u the truth,in budget consideration just change the crank only lah without fd and shifter.simple and save cost.the draw back is u need to stop and dirty ur hand to pickup the chain to change what size u want.thats all wink.gif

freewheel = screw. we call it cogset. usually 5,6,7,8 gears

cassette usually means those freehubs. 8,9,10 gears.

on rare occasion we can also find 9-gear freewheels, but those comes in limited quantities. no quite advisable to use these though as it might not fit your existing frame.

anyway that 13-34T 8-speed seems like good gearing. progressive. now only need a strong pair of legs to maximise it.

6-7sp is not enuf . just like my current bike. i ll ride santai but sometimes needs speed la..climbing little bit like botanic taman shah alam, etc. so 16sp is my aim. then i ll try uprade the front part 1st.
crankset - 44/32/22 - aso got nice deal - but more concern with bb (length/seal bering/square tape- all dat ). most cheap one dont sell with bb. If use my current BB can fit new crank with 3 chain ka? current are single chain only

FD if i gonna use 3 chain crankset - need FD with 3x (like below - 3x9speed)? or just can use any- http://www.bicyclebuysell.com/item/261910/...-derailleur-3x9

my bike https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=102...&type=1&theater

clamp - which one do u think?

must ask 1st is the bb come in package.usually in one package.usually all bb in stdt size.my friend already change the crank without change the bb.unless the crank stated different sized of bb..

44/32/22 are not the best ratio for folding bike IMHO,my old mongoose bike also used that ratio but i change it to 52/39 and its good!but if u indeed purpose ur fb as cadence machine,so can use that ratio.will pedal like cartoon lah...

for good upgrades,
the fd i think u need to get 3x10 better lah.no need to buy again when u already on 10speed icon_rolleyes.gif

Before you all go jumping into the triple crank, I think I better explain the complexities. The normal triple for foldie is road bike type which is 52.42.30T and not the MTB chainring.

When you buy triple crank , especially from the guy posted up there, don't get the Truvativ ones, he has other 2 types which are square tapered ones. The square tapered ones fits directly into most existing bottom brackets. If you insist on the Truvativ one, buy the bottom bracket as well. I think he has ordered. This guy charges you RM20 for courier but the charges are always less than RM10. So, negotiate before hand. The other 2 brands, Prowell and another chinese branded ones are also OK larr! The Truvativ uses the power spline BB which is now not in production but there are still stocks here and there.

Also it is better to use double crank though. The gear inches for a triple is 94.54 inches ( if you use the 11T at the rear) to 18.75 inches (if you use 32T at the rear). Whilst if you use double chainring the gear inches will range from 94.54 inches to 24.37 inches which is 6 inches less than a triple. The advantage is immense though if you use a double as the shifting is smoother than a triple. If you insist on a triple chainring, you HAVE to get the FD adapter similar to the Lite Pro type. The other type as use by Java bikes (the rectangular type) is unable to shift properly. Also for a triple you need either a longer spindle BB eg. 126mm or at least 122 mm which is hard to come by. This is because the adapter with the FD range is limited. Either that or get the Token spacers and add accordingly.

Also when you fit in the triple, when the granny gear is in use (the smallest chainring), the last four settings on the rear cassette is not usable. Means you can only use the last 4 or 6 (depending on how many speed your RD is). This is because the chain will sag ( londeh!) You cannot shorten anymore as well because the big chainring with the largest cassette setting needs a longer chain. This is because the chain stay of a foldie is not as long as the normal sized bike. Also you will need a long caged RD, I use them and at the last setting the pulley is about 2 inches from the ground but at this setting we are riding slow anyway so no danger there. Also if you use 2.0 tires (like the Big Apple) , the pulley is already touching the tires. I use a 1.75 inch Maxxis , so it is OK.

Anyway, you will improve when you ride a lot. So, just be patient and keep on riding. The granny gear on my bike is redundant anyway and is never engaged at all nowadays as the middle ring is sufficient to even ride up to Fraser's Hill. This is 42T and if the bike was a 39T second ring, it will even be much more easier. So, my suggestion, double is more than enough. If a double is still hard to pedal, you can switch to a compact crank later which is 50/34 T.

The pulley at the lowest settings using long cage. The chain needs to be adjusted in length carefully.

user posted image

The sagging chain when granny gear is used. The last smallest cogs are not usable but the same ratios are also found using the middle ring.

user posted image

The pulley at the largest cog, very near the tires and 2.0 inch tires like Big Apple are not usble!

Hi guys,

newbie to the foldie world. tongue.gif so far i'm pretty contented with my humble 16" TRS spirit. any TRS owner or ex owner here? any pertinent advice? hmm.gif

maybe looking to upgrade soon. but for now i shall stick with my humble one till i increase my cycling cadence and familiarise myself with the mechanics of a foldie.
