one thing i discovered in the last few days...
if u r heavy into playback of videos with digital (dd/dts) and hd audio (ddtruehd/dtshdma), you gotta get a box with a native player that can do that. if u rely on kodi for usb playback, it is becoming a nightmare for android devices. i can't fully understand all of it after reading and reading but i can tell it is becos kodi is setting a new std for v17. it gets worse with differences in android 5, 6, 7! in short, android boxes and androidtv firmware (and their chipsets) that do not comply with kodi 17 will be in a mess for dd and dts audio streams, no need to talk hd audio. feel free to read all these: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252064 http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=229348 http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=28...8984#pid2408984 https://www.reddit.com/r/nexusplayer/commen...ing_20_instead/ http://www.multipelife.com/passthrough-ac3...-with-kodi.html |

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Jan 28 2017, 11:55 PM) one thing i discovered in the last few days... Basically, Kodi development refused to do Amlogic's job any longer from Kodi 17 onwards. Prior to this, a lot of hackery has been employed to get HD Audio working and with the recent shortage of dedicated Kodi for Android devs, the foundation simply has no choice. Good thing is, the folks at Amlogic have taken notice and claim to be more helpful.if u r heavy into playback of videos with digital (dd/dts) and hd audio (ddtruehd/dtshdma), you gotta get a box with a native player that can do that. if u rely on kodi for usb playback, it is becoming a nightmare for android devices. i can't fully understand all of it after reading and reading but i can tell it is becos kodi is setting a new std for v17. it gets worse with differences in android 5, 6, 7! in short, android boxes and androidtv firmware (and their chipsets) that do not comply with kodi 17 will be in a mess for dd and dts audio streams, no need to talk hd audio. feel free to read all these: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252064 http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=229348 http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=28...8984#pid2408984 https://www.reddit.com/r/nexusplayer/commen...ing_20_instead/ http://www.multipelife.com/passthrough-ac3...-with-kodi.html I also believe that it's one of the primary reason the guys at Minix are delaying the release of their next hardware. Another plus point for Minix devices... They work directly with the Kodi team to release custom Kodi app for Minix devices. Expecting the same for Kodi 17 after its stable release. QUOTE(dwRK @ Jan 28 2017, 11:57 PM) Surprisingly q5>q10 for some 4k playability...but I dunno why... Hmm, from the reviews it does appears so.. Since they are both using the same CPU & GPU, reads like a firmware issue. Hopefully one that is resolved with a firmware update for the Q10 Pro.Use this page to launch into the q5 & q10 reviews... http://www.eyalo.com/2738/himedia-nougat-update/ This post has been edited by voncrane: Jan 29 2017, 12:24 AM |

Himedia, Minix, vs the rest...
What is important to me & never mentioned in detail in most reviews...half the time I use my Himedia like a USD350 Sonos Connect just to play music...by using the HiControl apk, I can see what is happening and control the box with my phone. I don't need to connect or switch on my TV. Minix has headphone out/mic in... Good to use as a "NUC PC" for skyping, recording, etc... This post has been edited by dwRK: Jan 29 2017, 09:25 AM |

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Jan 29 2017, 02:08 AM) where was that mentioned? can't find... Probably not relevant anymore with new firmware. Review was on initial fw, and the issue was on a few types of 4k only. (PS that page has link to both reviews if you are still interested.) my box is on latest firmware, haven't noticed any problem with 1080p, 4k, or hd audio. IMHO, q5 vs q10, mainly form factor...16gb to complete spec wise as top dog...some people needs it others don't...but nice to have anyway... |

Use of ext memory is not good for fast input/output.For installing lots of Android apps I suppose. Games (which I think I won't need as I don't game on my mobile also) Hmm... Will be sluggish, some apps will not even work. A 8gb gross net of firmware, apps, junk, cache leaves u with too little for certain apps like popcorntime and kodi quasar. Will be struggling to clean, remove this and that all the time. Trust us who have used 8gb boxes. |

QUOTE(Lurker @ Jan 29 2017, 11:46 AM) Why is the 16gb flash memory important if one can use external memory? Internal eMMC memory is faster and makes the user experience more pleasant particularly loading apps...external sd/hdd is snail pace good enough for media storage. For installing lots of Android apps I suppose. Games (which I think I won't need as I don't game on my mobile also) Hmm... As a first box...i think we all would agree and recommend 2/16gb as the entry point... I'm really curious why Himedia choose 8gb for their #2 box... |

QUOTE(dwRK @ Jan 29 2017, 03:39 PM) That is the base model... slim, small and powerful.Excellent for usb playback, home theater, samba. Without kodi, can take a lot of apps. With kodi, all good except quasar. I had wanted a "q5proii" with 2/16gb, like q16. I doubt himedia will do it now. Resources better used on kodi17 wrapper for audio passthru. Next gen, wud like to see kodi 17 audio sorted out, 3/32gb. I will then get one, retire the last q5ii. This post has been edited by AVFAN: Jan 29 2017, 04:00 PM |

QUOTE(dwRK @ Jan 29 2017, 05:33 PM) Base model for high end entry perhaps got cheaper models... h8, h8plus...but yes, q series with hisilicon chipsets have now become their flagship line. as for the low end segment, RM200 or so, it is very crowded, dozens of makers worldwide, cut throat prices. himedia like some others will have to move up the value chain, like all biz. |
