I prefer the Minix Neo A2 Lite Airmouse.. It's handy, has a nice weight to it without being heavy. Feels solid and not lightweight and or plasticky like most remotes out there. Soft tactile feedback. The top side contains essential playback and navigation keys. Power button uses IR connection and so it can put the Neo U1 to sleep, wake up, perform a full shutdown and also power up. All without having to physically touch the Neo U1 box. Tested & signals from about 12 feet away work.

Cons would be.. No backlit keys and the "_" button is missing. No Idea how the Minix team missed that.

I want to get a TV box for my parents in hometown, currently using unifi VIP5.

What I need from this box:
1. can be customized, which mean can jailbreak and install 3rd party apps for more future proof
2. Unfortunately our hometown TV doesnt support HDMI, and I am not capable to change a whole new TV. So is there any TV box can support RGB or maybe I can get hdmi to RGB cable ?
3. Budget is around under rm400, is that sufficient ?

The more important question should be... How much does it cost at the moment?.. Scout around, lots of online and some physical shops sell it. Hint: Lyn's very own Garage sales section.

1. Most boxes can do this. However, I'm a Minix fan and may seem biased.. smile.gif
2. Fewer boxes have supported the older RGB signals.. There are plenty of HDMI - RGB converters to choose from. So you might need one.
3. Budget's reasonable.. Perhaps you can look around for samples of box models around your budget, post back here and a best recommendation can be offered.

key word is parents.

how old are they?
are they used to astro?
do they use pc's, tablets, smart phones?

these "boxes" are not plug and play; not push channel buttons only.
need learning, attention and patience to make it work well.
if they can't handle, u will need to know how.

i just passed a box and "trained" a sibling's household how to use a box.
the box is 3 yrs old, my oldest, let them try and play, see how they take it.
primarily for kodi live tv stations and a couple of chinese movie/tv apps.
works fine with 5mbps.

i will know in a couple of weeks if they like it or not.
but for sure, i will need to update/maintain it in a couple of months time.

I assume and hope that there will be "free channels" for the coming Olympics.

If you come across some good ones then, please share.

Thanks.

when did u buy it? price?

can google... it is a dual core 4.1 jelly bean 1/4gb android - such specs... at least 3 years old.

the specs aren't clear, but it seems to say it can only read flash drives, i.e. pen/thumb drives.

yes, this is very interesting.

we await the availability and price.

also interesting that more and more TV's will come with androidtv - will there be a need for boxes anymore?!! biggrin.gif

One of these new partners is Chinese electronics company Xiaomi, which is announcing a new version of its Mi Box that will run on Android TV, support 4K, and will ship to the US. Earlier versions of Xiaomi's box were only available overseas, and supported HD video but not 4K. The new 4K Mi Box works with a Bluetooth remote equipped with voice recognition and also has built-in Google Cast tech so you can cast content from iOS and Android devices. Xiaomi hasn't said yet when the new box will be available or how much it will cost.

Google also said that new TVs from Sony Bravia and RCA will ship running Android TV, as well as a Sharp's Net Player. In Europe, Android TV will be available on Beko, Grundig, and Vestel TVs. And Google Cast will work with soon-to-ship TVs from Toshiba, Philips, Magnavox, Westinghouse, and Polaroid. The new TVs are expected to become available this summer.

google and u find some nasty comments on this box.

i would suggest u take the opportunity to change to another box.

top up to rm400, 500, 600 even.

get a box that is current tech, last u >3 years.

look for quad core, lollipop 5.1, 2/16 gb.

or better still, octa core, marshmallow 6.0, 2/16gb.

and take the chance to ask them to install the impt/good apps for u.

if not, u get a blank box, will need to DIY... do u know how?

** i assume u not only want usb playback but want to use android functions, have good broadband speed.

androids run on different op sys, not pc windows.

if u have not used androids before (like in an android phone or tablet), will take some learning and getting to know it - how to navigate, install apps, delete/copy files, etc.

a blank box = only firmware and manufacturer installed utilities/apps.

most box users will want browser, youtube, file manager, googleplay and some movie, tv apps.

if usb port can't read hdd/ntfs, chances are the firmware is out of date/corrupted or manufacturer policy not to allow it. the hardware can take it, like some older boxes i have seen.

this was seen in many bluray players and smart tv's with usb drives - but that was >5 yeare ago.
