hi guys, i am just wondering if there's any recommendation for android box that is good for some casual or action games. Read online and got to to know that Nvidia Shield is one of those box for gaming but it kinda expensive.

Any suggestion? Thanks.

A few questions.. What's your budget? What specific game titles are you interested in? Guessing you'll be planning on getting a game pad as well, you should. True, the Nvidia Shield TV box is pricey, but there is no doubt that it's the best ATM. Probably overkill for most especially if one doesn't have a PC equipped with a capable Nvidia graphics card for streaming.

On a general note for all, I've taken delivery of the Minix Neo U1 + Neo A2 Lite Airmouse and as usual, will be able to provide a real user's review & answers to specific questions about the Neo U1 & the Airmouse. I still have my PS3 controller for gaming, not tested yet but I do not expect any compatibility issues. My initial thoughts are, it's pretty snappy, noticeably faster power up and shutdown, plus updating the firmware was a breeze. The box shipped with FW004 which doesn't have OTA capabilities (introduced in FW005), however, I was able to straightaway flash the latest firmware FW007 - 20160415 directly over the FW004 firmware using a Windows 10 PC & USB 3.0 port.

Is there any android tv box that takes a 4G sim card? I currently have no wifi at my place, and some telco now offer free Youtube / Spotify streaming.

Thanks!

It's highly unlikely that you'd be able to buy such an android box as such a feature is of little to no importance to the average buyer. You are better off buying a 3G/4G MiFi device and using that instead. There's also the option of using a capable smartphone as a portable mobile hotspot.

I should have some time over the weekend to toy with the Minix Neo U1. However, posts from current owners have been positive and it does fall within your budget. I'm familiar with games like Asphalt Airborne, Dead Trigger, Shadowgun, Modern Combat, etc.. All played smoothly using the PS3 controller on the Minix Neo X8-H Plus. I would test Republique, but seeing as its a paid game... Eh.. smile.gif

Hmmm...How about china android tv boxes? what do you think? i mean they are cheaper if compared to units from more recognised OEMs.
I did some research online, and it seems that most chinese made android tv boxes are capable of media / tv streaming...but not really for games.

Cheap no good, good no cheap... Every car is capable of driving from point A to point B. However, some cars drive much better and provide quality after sales service than others. Same principle..

many boxes of many brands incl premium ones are made in china! biggrin.gif

i mean they are sourced in china, manufactured in china factories. looks closer at the labels on the box.

but it varies for diff brands and cos. as to what firmwares they put in to cater to what markets.

the ones that sell more outside china will have more eng/int'l appeal - incl games.

those that are meant for china market will have just chinese games. some don't even have google and youtube.

but if u know androids well, it can be made to work anyway u want with the right apk's and patches.

Here are some more real world usage info about the Minix Neo U1..

*Running latest firmware FW007 - 20160415 (Lollipop).
*Left the box powered on to run for about 14 hours and its still quite cool to touch at the end.
*Internet connection via Ethernet cable + spoofed WiFi connection for certain fussy apps like Asphalt 8 that demand a WiFi connection to work.
*iFlix works: Playback is SD as supplied by iFLix. Subtitles work too. Was able to detect TM's Unifi current promo and so no login required. Watch history is shared among registered devices.
*Astro On The Go works too... Granted I do not own an Astro account but tried a few free to watch movies and shows and they all played fuss-free.
*Hypptv Everywhere (Tablet) works too.... SD quality as expected, so better to use the Hypptv box instead and get HD.
*Fast cold boot up and shutdown. Same with sleep and awake mode.
*A couple of H.265 files that refused to play smoothly or at all on the Neo X8-H Plus, played smoothly on the Neo U1... So that's a plus!
*A bunch of the usual ehem apps work too.
*Downloaded Asphalt 8 Airborne and for some reason, the game isn't detecting the USB connected PS3 controller... More investigation into that is required. Might have to root and try the Sixaxis app.

KODI
*Downloaded the latest 16.1 Jarvis from the Google Play Store. For Neo A1 Lite remote users, to get the back button working properly within KODI, create a compatible keymap file and store it within the hidden Keymaps folder under KODI. I posted a copy earlier of a working keymap file for the Neo X8-H Plus. Same code works on the Neo U1.
*To avoid jitters, jerking, etc during video playback. Activate the "Adjust display refresh rate to match video" feature under VIDEOS - SETTINGS, to automatically set the refresh rate which is best matched with the video that is playing (default off). This potentially allows for perfectly smooth video reproduction, as video material can be recorded in a variety of frame rates (23.976fps, 24fps, 25fps, 29.97fps, 30 fps, etc.) which need to be properly matched by the refresh rate of the display, in order to be displayed smoothly. You can select "always on" or "start/stop". I've been using "Start/Stop", which means the refresh adjustments only take place during Start or Stop.
*HDMI passthrough works... Same result through HDMI-ARC.
*Only Jarvis was also able to output any sound and smoothly play a Blue-ray file that shipped with Dolby Atmos track. Well, since I currently do not own a Dolby Atmos capable receiver, the base Dolby TrueHD track was passed-through instead. That's normal and the sound's terrific.
*Installed a bunch of addons including Quasar and no crashes yet. The Beast build which I prefer has been pulled by its creator recently and so, going old school.

Well, that's all for now and hope it helps those still on the fence... Will update as note-worthy developments occur... Summary: I'm loving the box.

can u do me a favor...

kodi/quasar, on yr new box, set to external hdd if insufficent memory... try 6, 8, 10gb videos.

see if there are any judders.

i seem to notice the judders become more acute with bigger and bigger files for the same setting.

also, i tried various file sizes on kit kat 4.4 and lollipop 5.1.

kitkat is smooth only up to 1gb/45min or 2gb/100min files.

lollilop is smooth up to 5gb/100min files but also succumb to judders with larger/longer videos.

thanks.

Sure, I'll do that and report back. Free memory on the box currently stands at around 10GB and Quasar download path set to local storage.. IMO, in the past using Pulsar, preferred to download and play locally, files over 10GB. Nevertheless, Quasar might fare better at handling cached content..
