Hi, is a Streamyx 4Mbps good enough for android streaming box? If not, can the movie be downloaded instead of watching live streaming? Can 3D movie be downloaded as well?
Thanks in advance notworthy.gif

4mbps can get SD videos, cannot get HD smoothly.

download... can, either with torrents or the download feature of certain movie apps.

of course, slow speed = take long time... and u can't use the device for something else at the same time.

I'm okay with SD, until TIME broadband come to my place the streamyx is all I can subscribe to doh.gif
Streamyx will throttle connection speed to snail pace once detected Torrents, unlike Unifi.
Is there any android box that can download the streaming content directly instead of going through the torrent way?
Thank you all for replying notworthy.gif

the box is just a box...

it depends on the app.

not all but some apps have the option to watch or to download.

even iflix has download option.

but take note diff apps offer diff videos for same show, some better than others, typically little info about the file.

also, can have reliability issues... like stuck halfway and u don't know... very frustrating.

downloads, torrent is a lot easier to manage - to choose, monitor, discard, etc...

What are the names?

Most of the boxes originates from China. I look at HiSense, specs wise it seems good but are there any contents in English?

Also, these boxes; do they require monthly subscription?

Minix Neo U1

i went to buy it in Digital Mall... i asked the retailer if they could update the firmware to the latest version just released 006 ..they say they cant do that ...so i didnt buy it yet

So i wondering which FW is actually in the box and will i be able to do it myself ..they dont know..

On the Minix site it says can update to 006 using the OTA IF version 005 is already in the box

What happens if say only 002 or 003 is in the box when i buy it ..do i have to go through each update one by one or just straight to 006? how difficult is it ? Can use OTA? dry.gif confused.gif

Sorry if this has been answered before.

Thanks.

Here, do some light reading and familiarize yourself with the process.. It's fairly easy and you'll end up performing flashes yourself anyway.. Can't depend on sellers to upgrade firmwares for you.. If the device ends up bricked? Will you still accept responsibility and pay? Buy the U1, check firmware version, if lower than FW005 (20160129), then flash it and OTA update to FW006, else OTA to 006. This only has to be done once...

Ok many thanks for the info.i will look through that again.

Am i correct in thinking if it comes with FW 002/3/4 then i could also just use the OTA for each yearly update...one by one..maybe simpler for me ?

i'm using xp on my 9 year old lap top..not even sure if i can do the flash thingy's.. not too confident to try that just yet. (i don't even have a smartphone lol!) if the sellers not to confident to do any upgrade it makes me think twice .

No... As you would have noticed from the direct link provided earlier... OTA firmware flashes are only possible from FW005 (20160129) and not earlier... I doubt it'd ship with an earlier version but just in case it does, the flashing instructions provided to flash FW005 (20160129) are pretty clear and even include pictures for the faint of heart. Please reread my earlier post.

No offense, but when you buy any typical smart device today... devices with firmware upgrade options, you as the buyer/user is expected to handle upgrades and not the seller. The sellers not agreeing to the upgrade is simply a standard precaution. If you encounter any issues, which you won't all things considered (follow flashing instructions), that's why we have warranties and return policies..... As for confidence, I'd advice you to build some pretty quick as that's what you'll be in for when you get an Android box, especially ones that provide support... Provision of firmware updates (bugs fixing & intro new features) and flashing are strengths of the Minix Neo U1 and should not be regarded as weaknesses. Lastly, flashing the firmware is relatively safe.

P.S. I get the idea that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.. Windows XP "was" great and all... However, its 2016 and time to upgrade to at least Windows 7. tongue.gif

excellent question!

in theory, an android box is just a box with an android put inside + maker's firmware + additional goodies incl proprietory ones.

in theory, a smart android tv is just a tv with an android put inside + tv maker's own...

i would think not all tv's come with the same android, so you need to check one by one. i also think some are not standard androids but customed for the tv maker's needs.

i can only say this tv has an android that is pretty standard, i.e. "open to user requirements", 2/16gb, lollipop 5.1.
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3811168/+440#bottom
it can take netflix 4K, iflix, popcorn time, kodi, china apps, whatever... becos i have tried all of them!

the comparison of alternatives does not stop there since there are issues like ease of use, navigation, usb playback, native player codecs, audio output/arc limitations, etc. where a box can be superior. not a simple decision/choice, imo.

i hv no idea about any other tv, even same brand but diff model.

hope other smart tv users can comment here or in this android tv thread:
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3794905

as 4k and HDR tv's are hitting the market now, one can only expect they come with better and more powerful androids to complement the offer. meanwhile, we can expect android boxes to improve and be one up - come with the latest tech like dts:x, 60fps and maybe 8k... laugh.gif

In addition.... Summary: Android TV O.S. is not the same as Android O.S. So be careful and make sure to clarify the specific Android variant on the TV you are interested in purchasing. This thread caters to boxes running Android O.S. Lastly, yes Netlifx can be installed on either OSes, as there are specific apps built for them..
