But it seems to be the cheaper of the two, coming with 750m and i7, albeit having a smaller screen and no fancy steelseries kb also a slower hard drive.

You can get a Y410P DOS with GT755M at RM2.6-2.7k

Or an Inspiron 14R at RM2.6k with Windows 8

Well I guess I'm going with the Y410p. Does DOS mean I have to get my own OS?

I am eye-ing on Inspiron 14R,
Y410 seems better spec with a little bit money add on, but not sure if 17 is necessary, afraid it might not be so useful for me

I would say if you know you don't need so much power, by all means just get 14R. With lesser power means longer battery life and lesser heat produced, which also grant your laptop little more life. IMO smile.gif

Oh, that sucks.. plus windows 8 the y410p also 2.8k already.
If I'm willing to go to the 2.8k range, would the y410p still be the smartest choice?

thanks is it important that i take i7? if i7 makes a difference i wouldnt mind topping up a couple of hundreds
*
no, CPU is not the bottleneck for gaming at your budget. Concentrate on getting the best GPU you can afford.
If you add a few hundred, you can consider this:

Lenovo
Y410p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT755M(GDDR5)@RM2899, 4GB, 1TB, DOS, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty

Either this GT755M or the GT750M of the Inspiron 14R is the best GPU you can afford.

smart or not is 1 matter smile.gif
Nevertheless, the GT755M in Y410P is the best GPU you can buy with that budget.

4. Preferred laptop/screen size : <17

eh, I thought previously you have "limitless budget"? tongue.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

ok, try this:
www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-15, i5-4200M + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080)@RM3499[2.6kg][Onkyo, SoundBlaster Cinema], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), FreeDOS, [CPU Options: i5-4200M - i7-4900MQ]

Has Christmas promotion, but only free thermal paste for RE-15. Use the remaining of your budget to get OS (if you need), and change the HDD to SSD.
Then the game should not lag smile.gif
Other option you should consider is the 95% NTSC gamut screen and calibration, but it may throw you off your budget.

Those are actually standard maintenance procedure for all laptop smile.gif it is just more imperative for thin ultrabook as it have less room to dissipate heat.

Hyes sifus!

Can help me recommend a laptop for my mother (a lecturer + phd part timer)

1. Preferred Brand: Any reliable brand
2. Budget: around rm1k - Rm2k++
3. Usage: office, math type, vlc, simulations, matlab
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: maybe 13 or bigger (she's old), but at the same time lighter (mobile - easy to bring to classes or conference for presentation)

I am a bit torn apart on the size and weight. I don't want her to stretch her back that much if the screen size is too tiny but at the same time I don't want her to bring a brick all around...

Also, is touchscreen the new in-thing now? Should I consider getting that for her as well?

What do you guys recommend?

Many thanks!

P/s: Oh I don't mind what OS it is and already have Office installation discs. smile.gif
