Is i5 sufficient for Photoshop?

Please recommend some models (no Apple) with good service & warranty.

1. Haswell
2. Light gaming
3. Photoshop
4. FHD screen
5. 14-15 inch
6. Budget <3.5k
7. <2kg if possible

Thank you.
*
Less than 2kg for 14-15" FHD screen below RM3.5k?

There's none that I can think of because of that weight requirement. The closest is probably the MSI GE40 at around RM3.9k. But it is known to have heat issues due to the thin chasis and the graphics card.

I thought he meant 1600p lol

If it's just 900p, there's quite a number, just depending on the screen size.

Example for 14 inches, there's the MSI GE40

15 inches there are the GE 60 variants from MSI which has FPS resolution. There's also the Acer V7 with FHD IPS display

There's the Lenovo Y510p which has FHD resolution also. Illegear RE 15...

For 13 inches there's one nice Samsung ultra book at RM3k, can't remember the model number. There's the Acer aspire S7 as well

So there's quite a few lah, better to just mention what size you want.

1. Preferred Brand: Anything means reliable in terms of Support & Service as well as product. Not really need touch screen. And not really care about batt life or the weight.
2. Budget: 1.8~ 2k
3. Usage: Photoshop, Catia, Gaming (world of tanks)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14"~15" 4GB Ram and nvdia GT740m or equal.

Ok here's the thing, current laptop is Acer 5920G, bought it 5~6years ago. at that time its 4.5k. so it is not a surprise it could last this long.
Thought i had to replace the HDD and change the RAM to 4GB.
However good things can't last forever. Symptoms of old age are showing.

Nowadays, i kind of loose hope for Acer laptop around 2k price. quality and build wise i dunno can last how long.

Got my eyes on Lenovo z400 non-touch, but seems discontinued? and some still sell but the price varied to rm2199.

Initial budget is just 1.8k. some of lenovo g400s, s410p, almost catch my eyes, but the 720m GC is so-so.

I dunno how good is Dell these days.

I hope my laptop can wait till early next year.
So that new laptop or current laptop to drop more in price.

Any suggestion of current model and new model that might came out with the above requirement and price tag?

Thanks~

Dear senpai...

My friend offered me his laptop. This is his specs:

Alienware M17xR4
Core i7-3820QM,
16GB Ram,
2gb nvidia gtx660m
DVDRW/BDROM
640GB HDD,
Stealth Black
17.3" (1920×1080) Full HD WLED LCD Panel
Wireless with Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam,
free mouse n Carrying Case,
1 year warranty = Rm4500

What do you think?
*
I wouldn't get it. You can easily get a GTX660M or equivalent laptop below RM3k.

Get the MSI GS 17 instead, GTX765M, i7-4700QM, 17" FHD and at 2.6kg only

Or go for the Illegear RE-17

want to ask,
can help list out the model that the casing is aluminum or at least the palm rest area is make from aluminium,
with price around 2k-2.5k
thanks
*
Errrr, I think there are quite a number of them, go to any shop and pick and choose?

Anyways, just a heads up: Aluminum is a better heat conductor that plastic.

does the first 4 laptops you recommended (macbook, vaio, dell...) heats up quickly?

Hows the lenovo y510p's battery life?
*
He did not recommend Mac, Sony or Dell....

Battery life should be similar to most laptops with 6 cell batteries. Don't expect anything extraordinary unless you are getting an ultrabook with ULV processor and only integrated graphics card smile.gif

i5 4200u compare with i7 4500u / i5 3230m
i7 3630qm compare with i7 4500u / i7 4700hq
on term of processing power / power consumption
thanks
*
i7 4700HQ>i7 3630QM> i5 3230M > i5-4200U

From left to right: Highest processing power to lowest processing power and also highest power consumption to the lowest...

just read it, changed my mind. the screen is abit disappointing for photoediting sad.gif

How serious are you in photo editing?

I highly suggest you seek a person who can "loan" or colour calibrate your laptop for a fee, I was doing this service quite regularly last time but stopped already when I sold the device. Btw, the device cost around RM400+ for a basic one, I'm using the Spyder 4 Pro which costs close to RM700. That was how serious I was about photo editing lol. Plus, the prints that I do is from a Master Printer who prints for Malaysia's top wedding photographer brows.gif After calibrating my Dell U2311H desktop monitor, colours were perfect, 94% sRGB and everything came out exactly as what I see on the computer. Simply fabulous when you see your own work on print. It's just awesome rclxm9.gif

how accurate can it be calibrated? i mean, can every screen be calibrated till 99%?  but in the mean time, the glossy screen and hand prints is a headache too.
*
Colour accuracy after calibration will depend on the quality of the monitor itself. The higher the quality of the monitor, the close it gets to near 100% colour accuracy. Also, it depends on the colour gamut of the monitor itself.

But of course, the most important point in colour calibration is to correct the White balance first, as this is the most disastrous thing. You think you are editing a person's face to slightly brown, but in reality it's very brownish (almost orangy). Why? Your monitor is too bluish (cold White balance), vice versa.

The other points are correcting blacks/whites, contrast ratio, etc

Most laptop monitors typically have 60-80% sRGB values, the better quality monitors should have higher sRGB values, maybe like the Macbooks or the Ultrabook IPS monitors.

p/s: Don't get me wrong, the sRGB values are constant. It just shows how much colour data your monitor can display with respect to sRGB (almost anything you see on the internet is sRGB). My monitor which has 94% sRGB for example can display 4 shades of orange, while let's say your monitor only has 60% sRGB, it can only display like 2 types of orange maybe?

These are all that I know lah, don't really know the details...

infernoaswen There's actually one Samsung Ultrabook but slightly off budget, but the 1080p screen, 128GB SSD and HD8570 discreet graphics card is definitely worth the money IMHO smile.gif

I saw there are a bunch of laptop having spec of I5-4200U/M with GT 740M..I want to know that out of all that, any of them have SSD/Msata, or light and good battery life or good ventilation?
btw I saw most of them coming with 4G ram, can I request the shop to make it 8G? I afraid some laptop might seal up and adding ram yourself will void the warranty. Thanks
*
The price range for those laptops are RM1.8k to RM2.2K usually, so it's not possible to expect them to have SSD.

You can easily buy an SSD and change with the HDD, no biggie here. (caution: Dell Vostro 5470 supposedly is not compatible with SSD)

Same goes to RAM, just plug in another ram stick.

Voiding warranty? Quite a common misconception. The only way to void warranty if you temper/tear the sticker which says "void if tempered". HDDs and Ram usually do not have such stickers on them. It's usually on the motherboard itself iinm, do correct me if I'm wrong.

The z510 screen resolution is 1366 x 768 or 1920 x 1080 ?

Of course 720p.

The cheapest 1080p screen you can get is the GP series from MSI, around RM2.5k above if not mistaken.

Looking for lightweight laptop for girl

1. No preferred brand but preferred not to be Dell or HP
2. Budget < 2k (with this price is it impossible to get SSD?)
3. Usage: No gaming, only for office work such as word processing, powerpoint
4. screen size < 15 inch as the main criteria is easy to carry around

Thanks in advance!
*
Get any note book below RM1.7k, get something from Dell IMHO (good warranty support) and buy a 120GB SSD to replace the slow HDD

You can get a Y410P DOS with GT755M at RM2.6-2.7k

Or an Inspiron 14R at RM2.6k with Windows 8

Hyes sifus!

Can help me recommend a laptop for my mother (a lecturer + phd part timer)

1. Preferred Brand: Any reliable brand
2. Budget: around rm1k - Rm2k++
3. Usage: office, math type, vlc, simulations, matlab
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: maybe 13 or bigger (she's old), but at the same time lighter (mobile - easy to bring to classes or conference for presentation)

I am a bit torn apart on the size and weight. I don't want her to stretch her back that much if the screen size is too tiny but at the same time I don't want her to bring a brick all around...

Also, is touchscreen the new in-thing now? Should I consider getting that for her as well?

What do you guys recommend?

Many thanks!

P/s: Oh I don't mind what OS it is and already have Office installation discs. smile.gif

Grab the Dell Vostro 5470, it's pretty damn worth it!!!!

i5-4200U, 14" screen and 1.6kg only!! Super light biggrin.gif
