You can't get Apple with that budget smile.gif icon_rolleyes.gif
Please be more specific on the course that you are going to do in college / university.
15" will not be light (i.e. < 2kg).

QUOTE(pqNel @ Dec 28 2013, 12:18 PM)
Hyes sifus!

Can help me recommend a laptop for my mother (a lecturer + phd part timer)

1. Preferred Brand: Any reliable brand
2. Budget: around rm1k - Rm2k++
3. Usage: office, math type, vlc, simulations, matlab
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: maybe 13 or bigger (she's old), but at the same time lighter (mobile - easy to bring to classes or conference for presentation)

I am a bit torn apart on the size and weight. I don't want her to stretch her back that much if the screen size is too tiny but at the same time I don't want her to bring a brick all around...

Also, is touchscreen the new in-thing now? Should I consider getting that for her as well?

What do you guys recommend?

Many thanks!

P/s: Oh I don't mind what OS it is and already have Office installation discs. smile.gif

QUOTE(pqNel @ Dec 28 2013, 01:29 PM)
thanks! looks like a winner...

But, I couldnt find a port to connect to projector...  hmm.gif
*
On the connection to projector:
She may try a HDMI/VGA adapter (btw, lots of newer projector models have HDMI port now).

The issue is VGA port is actually quite thick, so most of the thin and light laptop could not fit it in (there are ways, like a hedge shape for the keyboard base so that VGA can fit in at the back), and also a lot of new laptop don't have VGA port already.

Does she do any 3D graphic in mathlab or simulation? If so, discrete graphic will be good, that's why the Vostro 5470 is a good idea.
Vostro 5470, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2249, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell
Vostro 5470, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm) + (1366x768; Touch)@RM2549, 4GB, W8.1, 3-cell

If she don't do heavy 3D, and she really want VGA, and 13" is not too small for her eye, then this is nice:
HP
ProBook 430 G1, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400 + (1366x768, anti-glare)@RM2399[1.5kg], 4GB, 500GB (5400rpm), W7P/W8P, 44WHr, spill-resistant keyboard
The anti-glare screen is a god send smile.gif

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

3. Usage: autocad,solidworks,pro e...
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: any

Thank you.

Your budget is at a no-mans-land, in a way hmm.gif
Solidwork and Pro E really can make use of Quadro / FirePro GPU, but models that spec with them are out of your budget.

Dell
Precision M4800

HP
ZBook 15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia Quadro K1100M + (1920x1080; anti glare)@RM6399, 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8

www.illegear.com
Illegear RS-15, i7-4700MQ + AMD 8970M + (1920x1080)@RM5799[3.1kg][Onkyo, SoundBlaster X-FI MB3], 8GB, 500GB(7200rpm), Multi-Color Programmable Backlit Keyboard, FreeDOS, [CPU Options: i5-4200M - i7-4930MX] [GPU Options: AMD 8970M, Nvidia GTX765M, Nvidia GTX770M, Nvidia GTX780M, Nvidia Quadro K1000M, Nvidia Quadro K3000M

So you are basically left with consumer class machine with consumer class GeForce GPU (AutoCAD is good since latest version has migrated to DirectX).

Asus
N550JV-CN077H, i7-4700HQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte)@RM3799[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard

How much is Dell M4800?
what do you think of Dell Precision M4600/M4700, Lenovo Thinkpad W520/W530, or HP Elitebook 8560w/8570wz?
Are they found-able in Malaysia?
HP Elitebook 8470w is around rm5100.

So most of the mobile workstation are basically more than rm5k? doh.gif

M4800 is expensive, > RM6k tongue.gif We don't have detail spec and price anymore, you have to ask Dell distributors for quotation.

Precision, Thinkpad W, Elitebook are all good stuff.
Those are older models, you really need to do leg work to find stock (and make sure they are brand new sealed unit, not display / refurbished unit.)

EliteBook 8570w, i7-3520M + Nvidia Quadro K1000M + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM6299, 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W7P/W8

Precison M4700, i7-3720M + Nvidia Quadro K1000M@RM5800, 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W7P [Screen Upgrade: FHD, FHD IPS RGB] [CPU Upgrade: up to i7-3920XM] [GPU Upgrade: Quadro K2000M] [RAM up to 32GB]

Yes, mobile workstation is expensive. If you don't need mobility, stick with desktop, a lot cheaper smile.gif

If you can still find EliteBook 8470W brand new unit, by all means go for it smile.gif
SSD will improve responsiveness a lot whenever laptop need to save/read file, do window swap file, boot up, ... you can make do with HDD 1st, and upgrade later on if you want. 256GB is ~ RM600. SSD price is dropping fast every year, so may be 2 years later, for RM600 you can get SSD of much larger capacity.
"no-man's-land" - neither here nor there. Your budget is a bit short for a great mobile workstation, but too much for a consumer class machine smile.gif

hahaha.. bro.. i revised my budget abit. RM3100 is the furthest i can go.. i've screened thru some models and i find that Lenovo y410 and MSI GE60 2OC-097US 15.6" are equally good.. except that MSI has a bigger screen .. Do you mind providing me some other brands that are on par with these? I couldnt make up my mind @@

Foundation in science probably will not use any software that is too CPU/GPU demanding.
But models at RM1.5k price range normally give off a bit of "flimsy" feel, so you need to make do smile.gif
If you really want 15", then:

Acer
E1-572G-54204G50k, i5-4200U + AMD HD8570M@RM1699[2.35kg], 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

G500S, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT720M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

FreeDOS mean you need to get and install OS yourself. You should be able to get cheap legal OS from school.

hahaha.. bro.. i revised my budget abit. RM3100 is the furthest i can go.. i've screened thru some models and i find that Lenovo y410 and MSI GE60 2OC-097US 15.6" are equally good.. except that MSI has a bigger screen .. Do you mind providing me some other brands that are on par with these? I couldnt make up my mind @@

if you are movie enthusiast, you should take full HD screens. for other brands, there isnt anymore.

EDIT : price can be negotiated. try get Y510P for RM3200. icon_rolleyes.gif
