Don't expect good battery run time with that quad core CPU and high medium GPU.
Count yourself lucky if you get 4 hours surfing the web with either models.

1. Preferred Brand: Asus/Dell/Lenovo/MSI/ apple maybe?
2. Budget: RM2k - RM3k
3. Usage: Surfing the web, movies and light/moderate gaming (Diablo3)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 11-14 inch
Would also prefer laptops that are less than 2kg

Was looking at the Dell Vostro 5470 because it has gt740m graphics card and also only weights 1.6kg.

okay few more questions!

Does watching 720p or 1080p (both youtube and downloaded) triggers the GPU instead of using the iGPU?

Did some research but i can't find a solid answer. rclxub.gif icon_question.gif

Closest would be these I suppose
11.6"
Acer V5-132P-10192G50b, 1019Y + Intel HD + (1366x768; touch)@RM1399, 2GB, 500GB, W8; color: light blue

Asus
VivoBook S200E, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000 + (1366x768; touch)@RM1699[1.38kg], 4GB, 500GB, W8; colors: Grey/Pink/White, 2-cell, 1 year
VivoBook S200E, B847 + Intel UMA + (1366x768; touch)@RM1399[1.38kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8; colors: Grey/Pink/White, 2-cell, 1 year

Lenovo Ideapad S210T, i3-3217U + Intel HD +(1366x768, touch)@RM1699[1.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W8

Better check on the availability of ports first. They probably don't have everything you want nod.gif

Those are great, but it doesn't come with Office. Which I will need to pay another 200 bucks for it (I don't trust pirated softwares due to bad experiences). As well as 50 bucks for Antivirus (I don't trust free antivirus due to bad experiences as well)

How does the laptops recommended above stand an advantage over Surface 2? I don't mind not running full windows cause I don't really use custom apps like photoshop etc. And I am very focused on the screen resolution and pixel density cause I use it for movies, Youtube and other video viewing activities (Surface runs at resolution of 1920x1080 and pixel density of 208 dpi). As well as battery life cause I use it in colleges and Uni which I don't really want to charge everytime (Surface 2 have approximately 10 hours of battery life during video playback)

Sorry. Should have elaborate more on "better quality". Currently I am using 5 years old Dell Inspiron 14. I dont like the not solid feel of the laptop, prefer brand comes with better built which can last me for few years usage without much problem. How is I raise up the budget to RM3k?

Thanks.

get aluminium laptop (unibody) with nice keyboard (laser cut holes; not those keyboard attached on it = aka inspiron 14 style) and good touchpad....

nothing beat the experience of having nice built quality laptop, instead of just wanting best bang for bucks with specs.. where oftenly built quality is overlooked by buyers....

especially you using a laptop more for 5 years.. i would say 3k... even increase to 4k price... is ok, if you want to get a nice, good, high built quality laptop....

please consider also...
MacBookAir 11", i5-4250U + Intel HD5000 + 128GB SSD@RM2999[1.08kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
not best for game due to 11", but if you want to play some hours of light gaming, it is do-able.. (dota, diablo 3, starcraft 2 etc...)

else it is very good overall...

those TJ suggested = laptops
surface 2 = tablets

laptops = lower battery life, higher performance, more "normal" laptop where you can do most of the stuff you normally expected.. higher harddisk space for storage...

surface 2 = longer better life, good for browsing and movie.... but low harddisk space

and if you are a student... i would expect you to do some assignment, courseworks, theses... i wondering for can you do it using surface 2... if surface pro 2 then will better fit you as your only primary rigs...

Can consider this one brows.gif
14"
Dell
Inspiron 14 7000, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400 + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2699[2.02kg], 6GB(soldered), , W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr, No ODD

*price in RRP, negotiable
*the mSATA SSD will give you a much smoother computing experience than just having a lot of CPU performance
*use remaining budget for warranty extension to 3 years
*
Based on PF T.J's recommendation, I checked the specs on the website. But no LAN port, VGA (still need this as some projectors do not support HDMI), no RAM extension bay in case for an upgrade,

Any other recommendations? No HP - always bad experience with its hardware.

Hi Gurus

Need some recommendation for notebooks/laptops

1. Preferred Brand: Anything but Apple. Anything means reliable in terms of Support & Service as well as product.
2. Budget: 3k
3. Usage: Business with lots of application testing and productivity tools running - I need CPU speed.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: min 14"

Thanks y'all

No news of Surface 2 in Malaysia yet right? hmm.gif
Anyways, MS Surface are 10.1" in size; your requirement is >11.6"
And you can forget about ports if you are going for a tablet/hybrid brows.gif

But nevertheless its a great choice as long as you don't use less common applications nod.gif
