Accomodation(Self-Catered) : £3700
Meals(Self-Catered) : £1600
Books : £410
Clothes : £410
Transport : £400
Other Expenses : £1500

TOTAL : £8160

and of course, this is just a rough figure and definitely depends on your lifestyle. So if you count it, it's around £680 per month. Hope this helps. And yeah, just to notify, according to this prospectus, the cost of living in Manchester is cheap when compared equally to other major cities in UK such as Birmingham and Nottingham, but are less expensive than London. Anyway, good luck for your studies.

Actually studying in Nottingham is not that expensive, studying in Nottingham, living cost is not that expensive, needs around £350-£450 per months. this including accomodation and also meals. for accomodation is rent a room (in the city), meal will cook yourself. As food is not that expensive, unless you want to eat very very good la. transport, if travel around Nottingham, there is bus card that you can buy. that will save a lot for transport.

i'm currently doing PhD in sheffield, and agrees generally with elb's figures. my PhD in architecture costs GBP11k a year (for 3 years minimum). living expenses is about GBP400-GBP600 a month depending on lifestyle and where/what kinda house u live in.

my house alone is GBP380 (3 storey, 3 bedrooms) and i live with my wife. bachelors should expect to spend around GBP200-GBP300 per month just for accomodation rents.

Do u know the tuition fee plus bench fee for PhD in Electrical Engineering at Univ of Sheffield?

Thank you

PR? You can only get a PR after spending 10 years in the UK / working with a work permit for 5 years. The most direct way to get a PR via studying only is:

A levels (2 years)
Undergraduate + 1 year internship (4 years)
Postgraduate Masters (1 year)
PhD (3.5 years)
Total = 10.5 years.

Of course, it helps if you did your O levels in the UK as well. If you're an international student doing technical studies, well, that's all a handsome sum of money to pay, assuming you get no scholarships.

Hi, i start my account in lloyds bank and plan to put some money in fix deposit. but the staff inside tell me that probably i cannot have exemption for the tax as i'm international student (this mean the interest i can take is deducted by tax, lesser). However, they are not sure yet and need to reconfirm. SO i need to seek for help here as anyone face this thing before? Btw i did receive a letter from my uni confirming that i'm student and will not need to pay for the council tax. thus, is council tax same as the tax mention by bank?

if i'm not mistaken, councul tax is the tax of the renting for your accommodation. it's true that, student in UK don't have to council tax. er, i think you need to ask what tax that the bank officer mention.
cry.gif i still can't open any bank account le, i keep having problem about the uni's letter to open bank account. especially natwest, my uni letter have change few times... blink.gif haiz...

Council tax is basically residential tax. It has nothing to do with taxable interest.

You can actually claim your tax or get exemption from paying tax.
You should get a council tax redemption paper from your department and you should fill in a Tax claim form and send it back to your council tax office.

income tax and council tax is two different taxes that has got nothing to do with each other. council tax is a tax that u must pay for residing under a specific city council. only students, elders and special-needs people are exempted of such taxes.

income tax applies to taxable incomes, in this case, interests from fixed deposit. as far as i know, international students are not exempted from paying this tax. so u will have to pay those.

Ha that helps a lot. ya the bank confirmed with me too. but they said if u really want u can call up a department and ask them to give u an appropriate form to fill in... Thanks tongue.gif . Btw, so this means for working as a part time, our salary will reduce also because of income tax? notworthy.gif

IIRC you can claim them back if you're still a student.

Which bank did you go for?

IIRC, I don't have any problem with Natwest last time because they know which one is the surname and so on. Normally,

First name = Your last two name

Last name = Your surname/family name.

Besides, they need my accommodation address, university acceptance letter and my passport. However, I'm not sure whether this rule has been changed or not smile.gif

Dont worry pal biggrin.gif . i had the same problem as u too. but solved already because my uni staff go to talk with them. (the staff also get angry about their sys as i went and back for 3 times!!! in order to get my account opened). Their advice are try to follow what actually is in ur passport, as long as they can confirm which one is your first or family name then is ok. Try to avoid using middle name. so i just put my middle name stick with my first name icon_idea.gif . so that is some exp i get from them.
KAM BA DE thumbup.gif . U must not give up wor, else u will no money to use doh.gif . Cheer!!

yeah, i know a lot ppl have christian name. actaully if you don't hv christian name, then the last 2 name is your 1st name. but if u you have christian name then the last name will be the middle name. so the last name will be the your surname.
anyway over here, can also if the christian name and middle name put as your first name. but not if you deal with the bank over here. nowdays they quite strict over these thing.
just finish open the bank account. but have to follow their system, which is using the last name(in my passport) as surname. well, wait until i got the letter from embassy and state the which one is my surname then i can change my real surname. haiz... friend, if anyone coming to study over, make sure you hv this letter, otherwise you will ended up like me.... sad.gif
