I come across many UK uni website stating good honours degree as the prerequisite for entry to masters programmes. Does anyone know what is the criterion for a good honours degree other than first class? Is third class counted as good?

Oxbridge wouldn't bat an eyelid at you if you getting nothing less than a first class from a top rated university. Other top universities demand nothing less than a 2.1.

Wish to ask about the expenses, including tuition fee, living expenses, etc. to study in the University of Sheffield for postgraduate studies, e.g. PhD, in electrical/electronic engineering.

Thanks.

i went to the EducationUK earlier this month, the tuition fees is around £10000 ~ £11500 for postgraduate studies. that would be around RM80000 ~ RM90000 for the whole programme.

as for expenses, i never got the chance to ask about it, but i managed to get a few of prospectus of various universities.

this is what i get from Univ. Of Manchester's prospectus which the postgraduate total estimated living expenses for 2006/2007 session:

duration : 51 weeks.

Accomodation(Self-Catered) : £3700
Meals(Self-Catered) : £1600
Books : £410
Clothes : £410
Transport : £400
Other Expenses : £1500

TOTAL : £8160

and of course, this is just a rough figure and definitely depends on your lifestyle. So if you count it, it's around £680 per month. Hope this helps. And yeah, just to notify, according to this prospectus, the cost of living in Manchester is cheap when compared equally to other major cities in UK such as Birmingham and Nottingham, but are less expensive than London. Anyway, good luck for your studies.

Thanks for your reply...
Wow... the currency exchange rate now is £1.00 = RM8.00 ah? Very high...
Where is Universitiy of Sheffield? Is it near to London?
Do u have any idea of the tuition fee for postgraduate by research, e.g. PhD research program? I believe, postgraduate by coursework will be more expensive.
Thanks

£1.00 = RM7.00 , I guess.
University of Sheffield is located at above of Manchester. It is quite far away from London, approx. 6 hours by train to get to London.

the calculations on the figure isnt that correct tho. i just estimated £1 = RM8 while the true value is around RM6.97 or RM7.

but the above estimation, i just copied it down from the book. And yeah, i've mentioned put a condition there, those are merely rough budgets, it will still depend on your lifestyle.

Tuition fees does not depend on one's lifestyle.

So, are you sure that the fees are £10k+ for the a postgrad degree?

Boxsystem: More precisely, you answered the following:

QUOTE(boxsystem @ Oct 31 2006, 05:27 AM)

My answer: A PhD course in the UK runs for three and a half years as standard; out of that three years is research and half a year is for the write up.

I quote the fees for Imperial College (which is probably a couple of thousand £s more expensive than other decent universities):

Overseas students-Postgraduate research

Petroleum Engineering/Geoscience £19,300
Department of Chemistry £16,500
Clinical Medicine £21,500
Mathematics; Centre for History of Science Technology and Medicine; and Humanities £10,250
All other postgraduate research £13,300

This gives you a range of £30,750 to £57,900, for just what you pay to the university alone*.

Living expenses in London? On the conservative side, £10,000 for a full year.

So the total costs of the 'cheapest' PhD, at one of the highest rated universities in the world, in London, would be in the region of £65,000 ~ RM500 000. But of course if you go to Imperial College you really wouldn't be doing humanities, you'd be doing something more science based, so the total cost could jump up to over RM700,000 (at the medical level).

Let's pick a more 'realistic' PhD, let us say Sheffield. Their Arts postgraduate research fees can cost anywhere between £8,500 to £16,000. Science postgraduate research fees* have two bands at Sheffield, starting from £9,940 and £11,340 and jumping to £17,940 and £19,340 respectively. The medical research fees are comparable with Imperial's. Let's choose the lower science band. Living expenses at Sheffield are probably around, let's say, £9,000 a year (just a ballpark figure I am throwing around). The total cost of the PhD? Probably around £60,000, or higher.

*Does not include bench fees (contribution towards research materials), which can another £5,000 a year.

The University of Bristol has quoted on their site that a biochemistry PhD, including bench fees, will cost £77,340

In summary: Your figure is no where near my estimations, or official university estimations, I'm afraid.

I think his 'postgrad' refers to 1 year taught Masters degree.

Am 'shopping' around for one and they're all between £11000-£12000 for tuition fee.

i'm currently doing PhD in sheffield, and agrees generally with elb's figures. my PhD in architecture costs GBP11k a year (for 3 years minimum). living expenses is about GBP400-GBP600 a month depending on lifestyle and where/what kinda house u live in.

my house alone is GBP380 (3 storey, 3 bedrooms) and i live with my wife. bachelors should expect to spend around GBP200-GBP300 per month just for accomodation rents.

to correct goliath:

sheffield is only 3 hours from london, and it's to the east of manchester. just look at it this way:

sheffield -> london is like KL -> JB or alor setar -> KL. biggrin.gif
