bring watever u can tongue.gif jkg anyway bring most importantly documents (passport, medical report, chest x-ray etc.) ur laptop, a few warm clothes (1 or 2 sweaters/sweat shirts, 1 or 2 long johns, mayb a jacket will be useful too), 1 or 2 sets of formal attire for ur functions, dinners and so on (buy the other clothes there its much better and more suited for the weather there). food just pack a few packets of 5 of maggi and canned food not too much of u'll get stop at customs there. money..... bring some in cash form and travellers cheque others in bank draft. don try to bring too much of clothes or food though ........ 20KG limit aint much.

oh yes... if u can, get the cooking utensils and bed sheets , pillow cases and blanket there. there r some companies who in collaboration with the uni accommodation who can sent it straight to ur room. this so far what i know and what i'll bring to UK in october (got those tips from my seniors)

got a question to all:

For visa app, who can certify copies of documents? is it the commissioner of oath? and do one need to give financial documents if the student is fully sponsored?

thankx in advance. and oh ya @acwc, hope i answer ur question. @others: pls add in (or correct me/give better advice) coz I'm also in the same boat as acwc

Yeah, MEng and BEng intakes are the same. For this year, it's 4th of October. Next year it will be around the same date.

For application, you gotta apply latest by Jan15 the year you wanna enter uni. They only have one intake, i.e. October every year. Cheers smile.gif
*
It's still possible to apply after Jan 15 as long as there's still vacancy available...
I applied in late May and i somehow managed to secure a place... tongue.gif

wokay... thankx u both. it seems hsbc is quite good. is it the student account? (or is there one?)  will check out later anyway. more importantly any good perks from that bank??? and as for natwest and llyods are they good banks? they have quite some benefit (though im nt sure if they are useful). such as natwest giving the public transport discount card (or something like tat) and llyods a bunch of things. pls give some advice on them.

oh for mobile phone, what do u think? shud i get a postpaid or prepaid? and what telco? so far i only know 3, O2, vodafone. recommendation pls biggrin.gif

@Geminist: yea..transport to uni wont be a prob since i'll be right beside the uni (south kensington area there). i'm going in first year so im also in campus accommodation. How much is PruHealth premium p.a.? or u have to pay per month?
*
It's about £25 per month, I think you get a few percent discount if you pay annually but I worked out that it's better if I stick the money in the bank. As a student, I would suggest going with the most basic cover, i.e. covers you for hospital treatment etc.

Check on PruHealth website. I got this for a while now so I guess the price would have increased.

I have never seen people being checked their bags before. They are more worried whether you are an illegal immigrant. However, don't push your luck and just be sensible, i.e. don't carry so much pirated installation discs on you etc.

You are saying...if the parent are Malaysia HSBC Premier account holder and you yourself aren't, there are still benefit?
Yes

And what sort of UK HSBC are you talking about? Basic Account, Passport Account or Student Account? Or are you say, they open a UK Premier Account for you with no monthly fees?
Premier Account with no monthly fees. As long as ure parents maintain a steady premier account back in Malaysia.

And what sort of Debit Card? Solo? Visa Debit?
Maestro Debit Card . Works just like any other debit card in the UK.

And must you maintain £50,000 in UK HSBC to qualify?
No

I checked. Credit interest in current account is 0.1% up to £10,000. Not a lot considering RBS gives 2% for Student Account. And Premier saving account interest is 3.2% for £50,000 which isn't a lot either.
Im not too sure cant be bothered to checked my pass account statements .. but if im not mistaken it was around 3%

And which department in Malaysia HSBC you have to approach to get that introductory letter?
Preferably the same branch that ure parents opened their Premier Account in. Get their Premier Relationship manager to draft the recommendation letter for you.

I hope this helps .. HSBC has served me well this past year, i would recommend it ;p
*
i got my recommendation letter but i wasn't told that i would be getting a premier acc as well.. haha.. u sure that they gave u a premier as well?

btw where did u open ur acc there? i am going to birmingham and as far as i know, they don't have a single branch with a premier centre there

yes .. a premier account .. i got mine, so i don't know why they wont let you . just say ure parents have intentions of investing some money later on when you meet their relationship manager .(he never bugged me regarding my parents the 2 years i was dealing with him so don't worry) and make sure you head up to the premier floor directly and don't go to the normal levels to open ure bank account . their normally on the top most floor of any HSBC branch.

i'm not sure about birmingham but im pretty sure they have a premier department in every HSBC branch .. even towns as dead as chelmsford has a premier department in its branch.

wad's so good about maestro debit card ? its all the same (visa) ...and im using lloyds tsb, i never received any interests... and I could change mine to HSBC premier, but what's the benefit ? it's not like i have 10-20k quid in the bank account....so does the interest matter that much ?

dont worry. they wont look for medical report. they dont look at the x-ray for detail as well, they just want you to have it, in case they want to look into it.

if you want to earn money via interest, put your money into saving account or ISA and don't touch it. you can get abt 5% annually.

only applicable to visitor on visitor visa only.

and the queue at airport is always long.

beside you have to tell the seller that you want to claim vat for that item when you pay too.

premier balances out ure money between ur current and savings account . you could set how much you want in the current account and leave the balance in ure savings account and gain interest on that . they balance out the accounts daily depending on how much you have used from the current account .

at 2k in the savings account your looking at nearly 10quid a month on interests alone .. thats 1 crate of free guiness my friend(with 2 pounds to spare on a bottle of woodpecker haha) . how can you miss out on that ;p

hm i dont think it applies to visitors only. its applicable towards students as well as long as the purchase is 1 month before the date of your departure.

vat is not worth the hassle to claim if your only going to shop below 50 quid in one particular store brand .
