Hey all got a few stuff i feel like asking before i go. biggrin.gif

1) Allowance. Do you think GBP270 is sufficient for living expenses per month? (this money if for duit makan and entertainment bla bla NOT for accommodation)

2) What bank do you use? Recommend me one.

3) Insurance? What type and which company?

4) E&E. How hard is that subject? I heard that complex numbers are rather important. Tell me what other things are important for this subject.

Lastly, anyone going Imperial College here? If you are, pls intro urself too! want to get to know more (senior or juniors or same year). And also those going to London to study in general. THose taking E&E are also welcome to intro so that there can be exchange of info tongue.gif

HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!!!! notworthy.gif

yes it is. as long as your school accept payment via direct debit, then that is it.

doesnt really need windows mobile phone, but a computer with a broadband for skype out is fine. i use skype out as well besides with my o2 free minutes.
1. yes gbp270 per month for food, little entertainment and transport is pretty sufficient.

2. hsbc has never failed me so far.

3. not bothered atm. for health, i am covered by nhs, for professional indemnity, i'm covered by the company. for own properties, not bothered to get one.

4. plenty of calculations.
*
QUOTE(Geminist @ Sep 7 2008, 04:44 PM)
1) Just as youngkies pointed out, it's enough to survive comfortably.  However, have you considered transport as well or are you staying near to the university?

2) HSBC.  They are very stingy with their interest rate but so far, the customer service is pretty good.

3) I do not like NHS, so I am covered with PruHealth.  It's a health program where you get more discount if you stay a healthy lifestyle.

I am also covered by an accident insurance with AXA.  In total all my insurance cost me about £30 per month.
*
wokay... thankx u both. it seems hsbc is quite good. is it the student account? (or is there one?) will check out later anyway. more importantly any good perks from that bank??? and as for natwest and llyods are they good banks? they have quite some benefit (though im nt sure if they are useful). such as natwest giving the public transport discount card (or something like tat) and llyods a bunch of things. pls give some advice on them.

oh for mobile phone, what do u think? shud i get a postpaid or prepaid? and what telco? so far i only know 3, O2, vodafone. recommendation pls biggrin.gif

@Geminist: yea..transport to uni wont be a prob since i'll be right beside the uni (south kensington area there). i'm going in first year so im also in campus accommodation. How much is PruHealth premium p.a.? or u have to pay per month?

Since most of the newer posts are from IC's student, there's something I want to ask, is the Bachelor's intake date same as the Master's intake date?

I mean the dateline for the application, I'm going to apply for the next year's intake, it's on September if I'm not mistaken.

Thank You.
*
do u mean master intake date as in u take the MEng course from 1st year (undergrad) or ur going for postgraduate?

For visa app, who can certify copies of documents? is it the commissioner of oath? and do one need to give financial documents if the student is fully sponsored?

thankx in advance. and oh ya @acwc, hope i answer ur question. @others: pls add in (or correct me/give better advice) coz I'm also in the same boat as acwc

QUOTE(Geminist @ Sep 9 2008, 01:34 AM)
It's about £25 per month, I think you get a few percent discount if you pay annually but I worked out that it's better if I stick the money in the bank.  As a student, I would suggest going with the most basic cover, i.e. covers you for hospital treatment etc.

Check on PruHealth website.  I got this for a while now so I guess the price would have increased.
I have never seen people being checked their bags before.  They are more worried whether you are an illegal immigrant.  However, don't push your luck and just be sensible, i.e. don't carry so much pirated installation discs on you etc.
*
owh so monthly...GBP25 cry.gif how much u spend for food per month anyway? and do u cook or eat out? oh ya...ur HP ur using pre- or postpaid?

QUOTE(youngkies @ Sep 9 2008, 04:32 PM)
dont worry. they wont look for medical report. they dont look at the x-ray for detail as well, they just want you to have it, in case they want to look into it.
if you want to earn money via interest, put your money into saving account or ISA and don't touch it. you can get abt 5% annually.

Added on September 9, 2008, 4:45 pm

only applicable to visitor on visitor visa only.

and the queue at airport is always long.

beside you have to tell the seller that you want to claim vat for that item when you pay too.
*
i thought ISA only for the locals there? nt for us(foreigners) rite?

Hi all, I would like to ask..

Q1) Will it be ok if I dun hav the medical report/ Chest X-Ray since they won't see?

Q2) How long will they granted a postgraduate student to stay at UK? length of the course + 4 month?

Q3) Can I put the multifunction knife and a small screw driver set in the check in luggage?

Q4) Can I bring the photostat version textbook inside my luggage?

Thanks ^^
*
1) its better if you bring so. here i quote from VFS-uk-my (http://www.vfs-uk-my.com/where.aspx)

"Due to the standard of health care here in Malaysia we do not insist on a formal medical check before an entry clearance is issued. However, Paragraph 36 of the UK Immigration Rules states that on arrival in the UK any person who intends to remain for more than 6 months should normally be referred to the Port Medical Inspector for a medical examination (queues can be long ). Additionally, an ECO has discretion to refer any other person for an examination if necessary.

If you intend to stay more than 6 months you may therefore wish to have a medical check-up shortly before you travel and carry the examination results and a chest X-ray with you. "

2) Not sure bout this. some one else might answer for you. smile.gif

3) you can bring knife or other sharp materials as long as its in ur check in luggage. you MUST NOT bring them in your hand carry luggage or in ur pocket. smile.gif

4) I think its fine. tongue.gif but better check with the others

i think you only need show your or your parents/sponsor bank statement has the amount of the money, should be sufficient.. but if you are using your parents/sponsor bank statement, you better get a letter state that they are going to sponsor your tuition fees to be safe side.
yes, 3 in 1 milo and instand mee you can bring over here. but i would say buy instant mee over here, as nowadays instant mee in malaysia is quite expensive right? i think you can buy instand mee from those chinese shop in city centre.. it cost around 25-30p per pack. if you are going to big city like london, birmingham, newcastle, leeds etc, you have more option to buy instant mee. i not sure for others place..
*
btw wat brand of instant noodle do they have? smile.gif

anyway, juz a question, how do you find availability of Halal food there? or do i have to go for kosher certified food? especially in london (more specifically south kensington area)

edit: another question, how do you find study life in uni? i was told that study time is from 9am - 6pm? Mon ---> fri except on wednesday. isnt tat a bit "wow"?

hey guys can shed some light here? im reli confused with this AER stuff.... ok lets say a savings with interest rate 5% AER (4% nett). i put in bout GBP1000. and the interest is paid monthly. so do i get GBP40 per month (1000x4%) or do i get something else? pls explain in detail smile.gif

AER = Annual Equivalent Rate

(1000 x 5%) / 12 = what you get a month.  You wouldn't be getting £40 a month because that means £240 a year, that means a 24% return annually (even better than the average 10% return from stock market!).
*
that makes sense. smile.gif i was actually planning while i enter the UK I'll have some of my funds deposited into a monthly savings or something equivalent (or maybe a long term bond) where interest rate will be bout the 5% - 6% range.

anyway can recommend me a good high interest deposit or monthly savings? and pls tell me the interest rates and also are they any charges hidden?

thank you biggrin.gif

Look under Egg Money for the 1% cashback.  The card also doubles as a MasterCard and a Debit Card at the same time.

http://new.egg.com/visitor/0,,3_57308--View_1073,00.html

Yeap.  I believe all banks regulated under FSA would have FSCS.  It's written in this page as well.

About ISA, as a student you don't need to pay any tax so you get gross interest rate instead of nett.  So unless if the ISA offers a better rate, then you can stick to Savings Account.
*
well...ISA offers better rates. 6%++ compared to 5%. juz one percent difference though. biggrin.gif btw we have to fill in some forms for tax exemption rite?

if u had not seat for ur real exams (read:finals), the admission tutor will use a forecast result. and if accepted u'll be be offered a conditional offer. biggrin.gif

@youngkies: the passport account has a monthly fee to it sad.gif its nt worth the interest as the monthly fee outweigh the interest. btw some banks provide something such as bonus in percentage (eg Barclays 0.75% first 12 month bonus) what does it mean?

I really scare that I have problem catching up with them. Most of the postgraduate student have years of working experience but I continue straight after I finish my degree without any working experience. Just do some revision or practice myself on the programming code.

No matter what, hope I can get to learn more from this "UK trip"  biggrin.gif
