Hello everyone,
I started this thread when i knew i was going to UUM in 2006, but there was not much respond.
So now, it's once again revived and i would like to welcome fellow lowyat.net members to UUM.

Some general information for you to know before you come to UUM:

Dress Code
It is compulsory to wear Formal wear to Academic places during office hours 8-5 during working days. After working hours. It is allowed to wear jeans to class(i sometimes wear three quarter pants too:depends on lecturer)
Library-Formal wear(8-5),Semi Formal(Non Working 5-9),Sat-Allowed to wear Ko-k wear into library,

Internet
Wi-fi is available throughout campus.
There is also labs for every faculties and every hostel(Don't worry for those who don't own a lappy:I'll even introduce u to a senior who studies IT and don't have a com or lappy,lolz)

Friday and Saturday is a public Holiday in Kedah.

B)Student Hostel:
Please refer to your booklet, it includes map and student population in each campus =)
But heck since i'm so nice i'll list em out for you.

Laluan A: Kolej Mas,Kolej TNB,Kolej Proton,Kolej Tradewinds
Laluan B: Kolej Petronas, Kolej Guthrie, Kolej Eon, Kolej TM,Kolej MISC,Kolej Perwaja
Laluan C:Kolej YAB,Kolej Muamalat(All Girls hostel)
Laluan D:Bukit Kachi 1,Bukit Kachi 2(All Girls Hostel).
NOTE:The hostel Bukit Kachi has changed name to Bank Rakyat now, The hostel is situated 3km from the main campus)

C)Transportation:
They'll be buses for every laluan where you will have to use to go to your classes.
Eg. Laluan B buses will start picking up people from Kolej Misc to Petronas to drop you to Dewan Kuliah Gagasan(DKG) 5, then 2(1, and 3 stops here too), then 4 at the laluan's specific bus stop.
In order to go to other hostel, you can drop at any of the DKG and then go to other laluan bus stops to go to other hostels.

In order for you to use the bus you have to have your Matrice card with you. Credits for using the bus can be bought from UNIC group of companies( The company handling the buses: located in the mall in Bukit Kachi,DKG 1,Varsity Mall and also Kolej Muamalat)

Price: 40cents for one credit. You need one credit per trip( I don't know if they raised the fares to 60 cents cause i heard something like that)

Car Rental:
There are lotsa cars to rent for your leisure or activity needs.
Prices are fixed at RM 5/hr for (Kancil), Other cars like Myvi,Wira,Viva and Gen2 are hard to come across (But they might charge you Rm10 for the first hour and Rm5/hr for the subsequent hour, all depends on your luck)
Some requires you for your matrice no and some even IC. Mostly don't.

Bus Routes and details:
There are two bus companies providing service for students to go out of campus,
UUM--->Changloon--->Jitra---->Alor Star(Pekan Rabu(2 shopping malls walking distance *)--->(Shahab Perdana(bus terminal)
Bus Companies
Mara: UUM to Changloon Rm1.30,Changloon to Jitra Rm1.80,UUM to Alor Setar 4.30
Hbr: UUM to Changloon Rm1.50,Changloon to Jitra Rm2.00, UUM to Alor Setar 4.50
*City Plaza (5 mins), Pacific (20 mins)

Taxi:
Rm12 Changloon to UUM
Rm40 Alor Star/Airport to UUM

D)Food:
There are canteen in every hostel, (prices varies)
Just a simple calculation: One plate of fried rice would cause you-Rm2 to Rm3, Air Bandung willcost around 60 cents to 90 cents. Conclusion you need +/- Rm4 /meal.

E)Places of Worship: (Areas mentioned are all in Changloon)
i)Muslim: Sultan Badlishah Mosque (Next to Varsity mall), Bukit Kachi Mosque (Opposite Bukit Kachi Mall)
ii)Christian:
1)Catholic: Opposite C-mart (One building on it's own, with chinese Writing Tian Zhu Jiao)
English: 5.30 p.m. on Friday(Fortnightly)
Chinese: 7.00 p.m. on every Sunday
2)FGC : After the market that is situated next to public bank, (Second floor Shophouse)
Service time:Every Friday 8 pm.
3)Anyway there's another church (Shophouse) beside c-mart near the stationary shop (I don't know what Congregation are they from)
Service: Saturday evening(Not exactly sure what time)
iii)Hindhuism: 500m from the junction that is close to the place car park to Hadyai(Car park is beside a restaurant called Kok Fong) in Changloon.

University Health Centre(604) 928 5913
Through experience it is better to bring your own medicine if you have other than the normal dissease such as influenza and Cough and fever as the doctors have a tendency of giving Panadol for everything. The Flu medicine that they normally will give would be Pirithon. If you neeed something stronger such as Actify please bring along your own. they normally give you Jujube's for your cough.
Pharmacies
There is 3 pharmacies in Changloon as of my knowledge one is near the stationery shop to the left of C-mart,one is opposite bsn, and another one is near public bank area.
Chinese herbal shop
Changloon-there is one opposite public bank in (They don't sell much but herbal tea)
Jitra-There is one opposite 5 Utara Cafe.This one is call (Liang Shiong Di(In Mandarin)aka 2 brothers)(This is where you wanna buy your herbs for soup like Pak Zhen and Szechuan and etc etc)
Clinic
There is one next to the automotive repair shop,same row as Tai Kar lok Cafe in Changloon

UUM (University Utara Malaysia)

Wearing:

MALE : formal shirt, preferably long sleeve, dark slacks; ties; leather shoes. u gotta wear this all the time during orientation week and classes..

FEMALE: OL type or baju kurung,collared shirt; proper jeans, shoes

notice: i) say no to : damn short pant (shorter thn knee)
sleeveless shirts
short shirts (girls)( they dont lik the butt)

ii) take notice to your hair!!(boys)(normally they wil check for the 1st week only)
saman RM50 if they dun like your hair style..haha
iii) all bring-in vehicles need a pass..if not, RM50 again
iv) male dun stay alone with girl, girl dun stay alone with male

1st week: i) bring sweep & some fabric to clean up your room
ii) bring pail, sheet, iron, water boiler...(or can b buy at there)

- some orientation activities can b skip if u brave to do so..

One advice in UUM dun let the school authority bully u, i shoot them kao kao during the forum where they tried to explain on this issue last year lolz.

Woah, all this orientation thing related to UUM is making me feel worried, since my gf is offered a course there.

Anyway, would like to ask whether is it ok to bring a jug kettle to the uni there, or u can get free supply of hot water?

i'm an ol' lady same batch as ol' man mr. cIvIc,

they provide pillow but if you are unlucky u might get some yucky stained pillow with god knows wat, so if u have car transport, i suggest u bring your own pillow..

owh... may i know where are you staying?

owh.. i'm bringing down then.. maybe bringing my bolster too.. hehe

oh.. tats means every day almost tat time sleep during the orientation week?

Hi it's ok to bring water boiler,
aiya if your house near and you can plan to go back orientation mah leave it at home first.
If u like me from Sarawak leave in ur luggage bag and lock loh.
Pillow want bring dun want also can one, but most important bedshet must bring.
Last time i stay petro i walk to class one,but girls block ok lah i guess lol.

my hostel is TM .. so aso 4 ppl in 1 room?

I'm ex-uum.. only become student for two weeks only. T_T

I stay at Petronas, block E. My first impression is that the tandas has = surprisingly = smelly, MALE toilet in the bathroom that are also so open.... and its a girl's dorm...

but UUM is nice. It have good environment. My regrets are that I didn't get to explore the deer park before I went back to KL.

I'm an UUM student. Just finished 1st year.

There's no ragging in UUM and you'll get to sleep around 12am, though sometimes delays might push it to 1am.

As I was told, the orientation this sem would only be one day. -___-. To cut cost, my friend say.


Bring your pillow if can.
Bed sheet.
Blanket.
Bolster if you want.
1 or 2 White Collared T-shirt.
Black Track suit.
Formal wear.(Long sleeved shirts, Black slacks, Tie, Black Leather shoes for guys. Girls I dont know.)
White shoes(for sport)
Casual wear can be worn in your college. But remember get at least one or two shorts that are longer then knees.
Locks, Brooms, Mops, Pillows, Pails can be bought even during your 1st day there. Got people sell.

BTW I'm in TM.
TM 2 ppl to a room(guys).
Girls got some is 3 ppl to a room. Some only la.

Yeala, my fren who become facilitator told me orientation one day only. I dunno true or not though.

Hey it's 4 person per room, but after u stay one sem u can request to change to 2 person a room, theyy advert it on the hostel notice board.

YAB and Muamalat is side to side and this two colleges has the most variety of food in the whole campus.
Got tennis court, football cour and netball court.

The sports complex is 15 mins walk and 5 mins jog away, the Pusat kesihatan Universiti is 15 mins walk away.

Civic: I dont know, my fren told me this la. Coz he say he'll go back 3 days before uni starts. The 1st 2 days is their training, then the last day orientation. lol. Maybe he got it wrongly and the orientation is 3 days?

TM college got wifi la. But last sem it's kinda slow and problematic, so we go other college online. =]

well I'm not girl but I do kinda know how it is there..

basically, at Muamalat, you'll be sharing your room with 3 other ppl.. it means that one room got 4 ppl..

there will be two double decker bed..

for those 2 person per room, you gotta be really active in the college...

dun even think about it if you're a first year..

i just graduated.. have a happy 3 years.. lol..

Laluan B:Hello normally people from eon and Guthrie will come to Petronas at night.
And noon at Guthrie.

Laluan A: Noramlly people will eat at Proton for Dinner cause more variety but pls note that food finsih normally round 6-6.30, But ther's masakan panas

Laluan C: Cheapest food in whole of Uni cafe. A lot of Variety in Muamalat and YAB

Er.. the college are in one line accordingto their laluan, so check in the first posting.

i'll be stayin in proton. so wanna know info bout dis residential. (izit 2/4 per room)
what bout the kk thing? izit compulsory??
and bout the dressing code. izit ok to wear a collared jacket over a blouse for gals?

yea you're lucky u found this, i couldnt find any help during my first sem and only knew a handful of ppl back then =(
as far as i know, proton is 2ppl/room.

regarding the kk, it is compulsory to complete 4 semesters of it, unless u can transfer credit from your secondary school (eg. u were a state player for badminton, so u join sports science and are required to just complete 3 semesters.)
attire for kk is black track pants and white collared tee, long sleeve for girls. (during 1st sem i kuai kuai wore black track pants, but i hate it cos its ugly and hot, so now i dun give a damn, im wearing dark blue cotton pants, . It really depends on your lecturer.. )
penang ppl can get it from Kim No Wak (dunno how u spell it but u know la, the sch uniform shop near komtar )

if your jacket is more formal, not the sporty kind, yeps it's okie.

I have no idea that there's a thread on UUM

I have graduated from UUM few years back.

Stayed in Guthrie for 1 1/2 years before moving to Aseania (wonder what if they have changed the names) for the remaining 1 1/2 years.

All the best to all, especially to freshies.

UUM is a great place for study (if you are into study)

~ I miss Thai food in Jitra and the nice sugarcane field in Perlis

Lol. If u're used to city food.

The Food there sucks! Especially in TM.

So TM ppl usually walk to Perwaja or Petronas to have their dinner. =]

oh.. tats means i need to walk for everyday to have my dinner ..HOLYMAMA..

haha.. perwaja is just opposite TM.. exercise abit b4 dinner looor!

hi guys, im oso going to uum soon...regarding the bank islam account, i jz came bek frm tat bank, the bank teller say uum will open account for us, or we go in only open....so we dun need to open now lo

PTPTN need a SSPN account, this can b opened in the various banks listed as AGENTS to handle the process, which means SSPN is SSPN, its not affiliated to any bank...my frens go Bank Pertanian open, damn fast, dun go to Maybank, they'll ask for a lot of documents...Bank Pertanian only wan to c ur IC...oso choose to open an account for urself, dun choose parents open for u, if not u nid a lot of documents

you dont need to apply for accounts la.. while applying for ptptn they will open for you.. need buy the pin only i think... check the ptptn thread for more details.. i also not that sure..

bukit kachi is a few km away from the main campus. It's bascially a mini uum in there with its own facilities(football field, tennis court, gym, surau, cafeterias, etc.) Dont worry coz uum bus got go there la.

I thought if apply when i enter uum, then the money i get would be next sem, not the 1st sem?

PTPTN have new rule tat we need to buy pin?

er.. this one i just know bout it few days ago when my friend ask me want to buy or not.. i buy d lo.. RM5 one is it.. the pin for registration thru online.. just successfully register...

i was cheated by my fren bout d ptptn thing. i rushed to town today to open an acc in bimb. when reached there, i was told uum has already open acc for all d students. managed to deposit some money. at least din waste my effort..

to seniors in uum, got any advice on which activity to choose. pls recommend some which is not boring.

Sains sukan have assignment, if you wanna do any sports u have to take 2 sems of sains sukan.
I heard Taekwando Ko-k can skip 2 sems but u have to under table money the coach. I heard lah. so for two sems u get A straight away.

Or do u mean other club activities instead of Ko-k
Are u a very 'bo ai bin' person who can go nuts and have fun and at the same time wanna go for proffesional development? if yes i have the remedy for u ;P.

Chack and Hakashi wait for crashoverride ah, i have basiclly 0 knowledge on ur ptptn cause they completely restructure after my year.

so if we enter the uni.. then register the PTPTN is get for nxt sem?

Guys don't worry about the money(ptptn)
Normally you will get during yyour first sem, most probably after a month. It is such rare cases where 10/25k don't get because of administrative fault.
Just follow the instruction that the authorities ask you to do.
There's always your local state government with their funds.
If you wanna find the scholarships and you think that your result is good enough, Look For Ustad Yus in HEP.

Dont do the medical checkup.
You can go there to UUM's Medical centre to do it, they'll be a schedule for you.

Don't worry about ptptn.
Go in uni then apply also can because they will be a second batch registration.
Remember to check the website for updates.
You just have to buy the pin for the online registration only.
Other stuff like opening accounts would be done by the uni, not you. And they've already opened for you.
You go ptptn website check your account number.
And the money u'll get this coming sem also, in the 1st or 2nd month after u apply, so dont worry.

Haha sorry for the honest review. Above rating is based on room condition. Kachi(Bank Rakyat) is the newest hostel and thus has the best facility so far.

Clubs and association is another thing,
if u want ur cv to look good join more clubs and Association, let me know ur interest and i'll reccomend you the nice clubs to join.

Not all clubs are active we have more than 100 registered clubs in UUM but during Hari organisasi pelajar(HOPE) Day i only see 40 + booths.

Dun stay in your room in UUM you'll be bored trust me, unless u r those gaming freak or anti social people, please mix around. It should be the best time of your study years in University.

Ko-k and clubs are different, Ko-k is a compulsory activity that is counted in your credit hour and your grades, don't worry everyone get's an A unless u make the lecturer angry or something i had A's for 4 sem.
Yup after sending in the borang they'll choose one of your choice, but normally they'll give you your first choice.

Clubs is another thing, depending on your interest i would reccomend you what clubs to join. Academic, Sports, outdoor, martial arts...etc

Academic:AIESEC(Exchange program, local,national,and international conference, proffesional development (exist in all local U in west Malaysia and in 100 countries, most active club in whole Uni,Links with Loreal Malaysia, PENEXPO event, St Nicholas home for the blind Penang)(second higest recruitment 500+ on recruitment week) (Sorry i know i'm bias i'm form this organisation lolz)
Sports: Badminton club,(They're quite active) Basketball club (registration runs out very fast),Life guard course(Swimming club) (I joined but did not go for the test cause was too busy with other stuff)
Outdoor:Kembara (They got tons of members last year dunno whether they active or not)
Culture: Japanese culture club, (Top member recruitment i would say for last academic year, 800+, Sh.. i'm not suppose to reveal this)
Matial arts: Wushu, Taekwando(WTF)

bout the KO-k thing.. sains sukan is bout wat?

In order for you to take sports ko-k. EG:Basketball,swimming,football etc etc.
You have to take sains sukan for 2 semester then after that you can specialise.
It is just basiclly sitting in class for two sems listening to lectures

Yea.. sains sukan is like sports theory... they teach u about heart rate, training methods and stuff.

Your hair 1st week need confine to the rules. After that no one really cares la... but before exam remember cut it also... after 1st week if dye a bit those dark colors nvm one, like dark brown, brown red, etc, just dont too light your hair color.

owh.. means later only we'll be joining these clubs?
now join the ko-k first?
now i got it.. the blue card is for ko-k..
so if i want to join choir.. i'll be joining only later?

choir is under ko-k, so u fill up the ko-k form and write choir as your first choice..
those AIESEC, Badminton Club, Martial arts, etc are under clubs that u can join later..
