Hey, i want to ask something. Have you guys ever faced the dreaded 8 beeps on start up? I'm thinking of buying the m17x R4. It's overprice so yeah i need to make sure i make the right choice. So, i Googled anything related to the R4 and i found out that some R4 users encounter this problem. What causes this problem anyway? Thanks.

alienware with a valid warranty is not overpriced. without it, yes. (normally people are looking at tangible part of the deal, and forget about the equally important but intangible part, i.e. the after sales tech and warranty support)

8 beeps is usually about lcd screens (lcd screen failure). (i got hit with that once. it's due to lcd cable issues caused by my itchy hands; NOT factory defects)

Besides the 8 beeps, do you have any other problems using the m17x?

none. all the 'issues' were actually caused by myself (fixed by myself also. all except the damn lcd cable :/)

edit: it's a long distance trip. i suspected that the rough road conditions caused the display to not work when it arrived. (well i should say it partially worked because the screen showed everything, only with distorted colors)

er.. if that happens do not try to fix it yourself, leave it to dell? i told you that incident was purely my fault haha

normally it will not happen. (i have brought the laptop to many places also. local and overseas. no problem.)

uh? sorry to make you think that aw is so weak in terms of build quality haha! no you don't need to have extra precautions of any sort. just use the laptop normally. it is sturdy and well-built.

batteries these days have charging protection to help prolong its lifespan. (i.e. it will not charge when the battery is above 95% full). i always put my battery in. after more than a year's use this way, the wear level is just 12%.

by the way the battery is for you to do light tasks with your laptop, not gaming. (by gaming i mean bf4 kind of games, not freecell or solitare) always connect to an external power source (plugged in) when you game. do not ever game on battery only, because battery power alone is not enough to feed the cpu/gpu during gaming (you will get lousy performance and experience), plus you stress the battery even more. (it's like your ac adapter, if you use a low-power ac adapter to play games, it will get stressed and hence result in much shorter lifespan)

8 beeps is rare to be happens, mostly happends on 3D model or 120hz LCD.

8 beeps isnt the major issue on M17xR4, as it doesnt have major issue.

Technology stuff mostly depends on your luck whether u are 'lucky' enough to get the problem unit.

1000 unit i might have 2 to 3 % problem, meaning 30 out of 1000 will be having factory default failure

it happens everywhere. the question is still how manufacturers respond to it. i don't know about others, but for aw, i can tell you they keep their words.

buy straight from bro putochip123. although he may offer you GTX7xxM, but take note that the GTX8xxM chips are still using Kepler architecture, which is a 20% performance boost (2-4FPS to be exact), which is not worth the price you paid for.

Thanks for the info. Saved me the trouble of wasting a few bucks. Anyway, i might visit Lowyat in next coming weeks. Can you tell me which shops that sell alienware laptops, preferably the 17?
