nope IIRC, the J comes from Team J Craft, a team of Japan Ibanez luthiers. Occasionally they make very limited runs of J-custom models, pretty much the best Ibanez you can find.
Let's not make a blanket statement that Ibanez guitars are geared more towards metal. There are other models other than the RG and even then, the RG is some of the most versatile guitar around. Definitely a more versatile choice than a stock Fender Strat or a stock Les Paul.
To me, the RG is great combination of the Strat and the LP. Position 1 and 5 gives you the classic humbucker tone, position 3 classic single coil tone and position 2 and 4 give you the the classic "quack" sound of a strat. Try getting that tone from an LP.
I will never recommend a guitar with a double locking tremolo if that will be you only guitar though.
I will also not recommend an Epi LP on the basis that for the price, there are seriously a lot of other better choice around. You can get an Ibanez SZ for less than RM1700++ after discount in Bentley. That is a better guitar in everyway compared to the Epi LP. It plays better, comes with better pups, has better workmanship, better hardware, real maple cap, lots more.
I will also not recommend a stock SSS Strat for an only guitar. It is not a very versatile set up and you will only end up gutting it and wasting more money installing a humbucker later.
And also, do not buy anything from Rhapsody in Mid Valley. Overpriced in every single item. Their roland cube, RM410 is the best they can do. Bentley? RM380.
You can find Epi in Chambers music. RM2100 for an LP and that's before discount.
Also, always buy the best possible guitar you can. Worry about the amp later.
all depends what the individual wants. imo a person who goes for a strat or les paul knows what they want.

plus dont forget the stock HSS strats.
ibanez might be a good guitar, but i have never liked the thin necks from ibanez, and i've seen too many warped ibanez necks also.
and if you still want a epi LP and got the time, just go SG and buy. basically a epi LP standard is SGD600 there brand new, throw in gst, trainfare etc it comes up to less than RM1600. used of cos even cheaper.

That's what I once thought too, but not anymore, I have come to realized that 90% of your tone is really from your amp and your pickup(and your fingers). I am using an RG but with the Breed humbucker, it nails the classic LP tone so well I can't believe it.
