Royal Thai Army add R44 – with training from Heliluck and Mornington Sanford Aviation

12 Dec, 13

The Thai Army are taking delivery of a Robinson R44 Raven II - serial 13525 - for evaluation, and it is scheduled to arrive in-country this month. Local operator - and Robinson dealer in Thailand - Heliluck Aviation is handling the whole project, with Richard Mornington Sanford of Mornington Sanford Aviation providing R44 type training for Heliluck. The training provided covered both R44 maintenance and pilot training, and was conducted in Heliluck's huge new facility in Bangkok, and consisted of five days theoretical training plus three days of practical work.

The Thai DCA approved R44 pilot conversion course was also conducted at Heliluck's new facility and consisted of four days of theoretical training, plus a minimum of five hours flight training per pilot.

Richard Mornington-Sanford is seen in these photos with the Thai trainees.

Singapore says in 'no particular hurry' to buy Lockheed F-35 jets

WASHINGTON Thu Dec 12, 2013 8:23pm EST

(Reuters) - Singapore's Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen on Thursday said his country was seriously considering buying Lockheed Martin Corp's (LMT.N) F-35 fighter jet but was in "no particular hurry" to buy new jets since its F-16 fighters were still in good shape.

"Singapore is seriously looking at the F-35s to replace our F-16s," the Singapore official told reporters at the Pentagon during a joint news conference with U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

"We're in no particular hurry, because our F-16s are still very operational, and they're due for upgrades. But it is a serious consideration," Eng Hen said.

The minister said he saw a demonstration of two F-35 B-models operated by the U.S. Marine Corps during a visit to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona earlier this week and described the new aircraft as "quite an engineering marvel." The B-model takes off from shorter runways and lands like a helicopter.

Lockheed is developing three models of the new Joint Strike Fighter for the U.S. military and eight countries that helped fund its development: Britain, Canada, Australia, Norway, Turkey, Italy, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Israel and Japan have also ordered the new radar-evading warplane, and South Korea last month signaled its plans to order 40 of the planes.

Singapore has long been interested in the fighter plane, and appeared poised to place firm orders earlier this year, but that timetable has slipped somewhat, according to sources close to the F-35 program.

Sad tale of malaysian military development. Always being sideline as last priority. No matter what threat perception that we have, when everything looks well again, it back to square one.

U.S., Chinese warships narrowly avoid collision in South China Sea

user posted image

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. guided missile cruiser operating in international waters in the
South China Sea was forced to take evasive action last week to avoid a collision with a Chinese
navy ship maneuvering nearby, the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement on Friday.

The incident on December 5 involving the USS Cowpens came at a time of heightened tensions between
the United States and China following Beijing's declaration of an Air Defense Identification Zone in the East China Sea.

The Pacific Fleet statement did not offer details about what led to the near-collision. But it did say the incident
underscored the need for the "highest standards of professional seamanship, including communications between vessels,
to mitigate the risk of an unintended incident or mishap."

Beijing declared the air defense zone over the East China Sea late last month and demanded that aircraft flying
through the area provide it with flight plans and other information.

The United States and its allies rejected the Chinese demand and have continued to fly military aircraft into the zone,
which includes air space over a small group of islands claimed by China but currently administered by Tokyo.

In the midst of the tensions over the air defense zone, China deployed its only aircraft carrier,
the Liaoning, to the South China Sea for maneuvers. Beijing claims most of the South China Sea
and is involved in territorial disputes in the region with several of its neighbors.

3 of 5 Agusta choppers delivered to PH Navy

By Frances Mangosing
6:55 pm | Wednesday, December 11th, 2013

MANILA, Philippines – Three of five Agusta Westland AW109 maritime choppers for the Philippine Navy were delivered over the weekend, the military said.

Philippine Fleet spokespersons Lieutenant Junior Grade Rommel Rodriguez told INQUIRER.net on Wednesday that the three choppers arrived last Sunday and are currently being assembled at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

The choppers are being assembled and checked for testing.

“When you buy something you want to make sure it is [completely working],” he said.

But Rodriguez could not immediately give details, such as commissionship of the choppers, saying that they were still “straightening out” details.

He said, however, said that the choppers will be commissioned within the month.

Two batches of pilots and crewmembers underwent six months training in Italy for the choppers. After commissionship, the choppers will likely be deployed with the two biggest warships — BRP Gregorio del Pilar and Ramon Alcaraz, but more pilots would also undergo training first.

Two more choppers are scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2014. All the five choppers are worth P1.33 billion and they are part of the military’s capability upgrade program.

The naval choppers are capable of “wide range” missions such as economic zone protection, surface surveillance, search and rescue and maritime security. The contract includes initial logistics support and training for aircrew and maintenance personnel.
