1. Preferred Brand: Any

2. Budget: +/- RM1,000

3. Usage: Light and Portable. Need Microsoft Office Excel (Don't want 3rd party)

4. Preferred laptop/screen size:
- I'm looking into Windows RT tablet with detachable keyboards.
- Saw Asus FT600 at Lowyat last night. Selling for Rm1,299. Looks quite okay.
- Any other models to recommend?
- Btw, Windows RT got any disadvantage? Need to know these before buying.
*
what do you mean by "MS Office Excel (don't want 3rd party)"? You want Excel to be included in the price? You want Excel to be pre-installed in the laptop / tablet? You want legal copy, not Jack Sparrow Excel? tongue.gif

W8RT / W8.1RT - does not support legacy window desktop application, can only run apps from windows store.
Come with OfficeRT (include Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, Outlook (W8.1RT). OfficeRT does not support all the features in normal desktop Office (e.g. VBA ... ).

Since you are looking at Asus, might as well consider T100. Run full W8.1 (not W8.1RT), Intel Atom Bay Trail, come with proper Office (make sure the re-sellers don't con you and don't give you this), ~ RM1.3k, with keyboard dock.
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2960043

If you can wait a bit, wait for these to get launched in Malaysia for more choices:
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2976201
Acer Iconia W4, Dell Venue Pro 8/11, Toshiba Encore ...
They all come with Intel Atom Bay Trail, run full W8.1, should have Office pre-installed ...

Can install 'Jack Sparrow' Ms Office 2007 meh? I thought cant run .exe installation files?

Btw, any idea the MS Office given is Free Lifetime Office? Or it's just trial period only? Anyone can verify this?
*
As I said, if you go with W8.1RT, it come with Office RT doh.gif

U sure the HP warranty can extend 2 years just rm100 more a Lil?
*
The HP come with 1 year warranty. I said it can be extended TO 2 years warranty (not extend for 2 more years (ie total 3 years) warranty).
You can buy HP care pack upon purchase of laptop. The price of HP care pack differ depending on models (Pavilion is cheaper, Envy is more expensive, Spectre is even more expensive).
iinm, for Pavilion, care pack for 2 years is ~ RM200, care pack for 1 year is ~ RM100.
Please check with re-sellers.

Ha ha ha the reason is I want to become gamer tongue.gif
Actually is because of the 4th gen i7. Initially want to get a notebook which have 4 sodimm but it is way out of my budget.

and latest CPU should be better, right?
*
yup, laptop models with 4 RAM slots are normally those workstation replacement tongue.gif

Yes, 4th Gen (Haswell) i7 give better battery runtime. In term of raw power, improvement over Ivy Bridge (3rd Gen) is not much clock for clock hmm.gif

Yes, getting the latest CPU is usually the wiser choice if price is very similar.

If you intend to play newer games, then the GE40 with GT760M pushing HD+ (1600x900) will be a better choice (GT740M pushing at FHD resolution in GP60 will not be nice tongue.gif ).

Just need to keep an eye on the temp smile.gif

3. Usage: Normal daily use mostly watching drama and also for assignment purposes.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: about 14/15" not too big nor heavy.

You do assignment using MS Office? Then i3 with Intel HD is sufficient.

Asus (with 2 years international warranty, confirm with re-sellers)
K46CB-WX060H, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 750GB, W8, 4-cell, OD

Dell (extend warranty to 3 years ~ RM300. Then do a Tag transfer to transfer the warranty to UK when you go to UK (make sure model is also being sold in UK)).

4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 13/14

Minimum requirements:

intel i5 3rd gen, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd,dvd writer, can upgrade warranty to minimum 3 years.

I think only this model tick all your boxes:
Asus
K46CB-WX060H, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 750GB, W8, 4-cell, OD (Get more RAM (4GB stick ~ RM100))

Thanks.  Not going to play latest game ... most likely some old games that don't really require to be online all the time (which mean none of the new games  hmm.gif )

Seem like MSI don't have service center in all ASEAN countries, and I will be traveling to those countries for work.  Worry that the laptop breakdown while I am there and will be problem.

So now, need to look back Lenovo, which have service center in most of the ASEAN countries ...  rclxub.gif

So, might not able to get GE40  shakehead.gif  .... maybe Y510P sweat.gif

just keep in mind that warranty support (from any brand) could only be provided if the models is also sold in that country. (spare part issue).

What you should aim for is as powerful a CPU as you can afford (the software you use can take advantage of i7 quad core), but you can make do with i5.
You also need at least a mid-range GPU.
As much RAM as you can (8GB will be good). Don't go with only 2GB if you open Solidworks, AutoCAD, MatLab at the same time laugh.gif
If you still have budget, put in a SSD (128G ~ RM300, 256G ~ RM600) and replace the HDD (keep as external storage).

1. Brand : No preference on brands but would like one that has good after sales/ warranty services
2. Price: RM 2000-3000 (Willing to stretch the budget if the specs is worth it)
3. Size: 14'-16', HD screen resolutions would be a plus
4. Usage according to priority: Microsoft office programs & occasionally AutoCad, Gaming [ Dota2, Starcraft 2 ], Watching videos

I understand the Lenovo y510p and 410p is highly recommended according to the preferences mentioned above, but I would like to know if there's any other alternatives as well. I'll be traveling a lot with the laptop, so weight and durability is a priority as well. Thank you!
*
Good aftersales warranty services - Dell Malaysia on site.
HD resolution - 14" or larger laptop all come at least with HD (1366x768) screen or better.
Dota2, Starcraft2 - playable in HD (1366x768) resolution, medium details, with GT740M.
Nope, Y510P and Y410P no longer enjoy the price competitiveness.
Weight - laptop with powerful spec will not be light in general.
Durability - this cost money. Entry level biz class laptop is more durable, but don't come with powerful spec with your budget.

You need to priorities your priority smile.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

They tilt toward the "tough, durable" part, which is quite objective. And bingregory mentioned "commercial grade travel machine" smile.gif

"decent multimedia", that is a bit more subjective laugh.gif
For example, the speakers in E430/E431 is actually stronger / louder than usual for biz laptop smile.gif
But you are right on the screen though, normal TN screen, nothing to shout about, saving grace is they are mostly matte tongue.gif
