the touch screen, my personal opinion, does not look as nice (brightness and colour a bit off) compared to the non-touch screen.

Hello sifus,

I would appreciate your advice on a laptop for my boss, I'm not familiar with what's in the market and overseas models often don't make it here.

1. Preferred Brand - Any, open to options
2. Budget - RM4k - 7k
3. Usage - Office, multimedia, NO gaming
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 17"

Thank you!

Hi all sifus sorry for bothering.. need some suggestion

i) Any brands
ii) Budget (2.5k -3k++) -
iii) surfing, blogging, photo editing, some gaming, prefer light in weight

I actually had been looking for quite alot of posts here which you all had been recommend to the people.. so there are few models I think are not bad like lenovo ideapad y510p, Acer R7-571-53338G1T,Asus S550CB-CJ102H,Asus S551LB. can give me some suggestion which 1 is better or another other model is good enough?  Another question is Asus Zenbook UX302 already release in malaysia? and MacBook is really cant play games at all?

Thanks in advance!
*
You want light weight? Then you can rule out Y510P (~ 2.8kg), R7 / S550CB / S551LB (~ 2.4kg) (all weight without taking into account the adapter).
If you really want 15", then forget about light weight.

MacBook, certain models spec with decent GPU (Nvidia GT750M, Intel HD 5200) has the GPU power to play games. You need to know how to run Windows OS in MacBook (either VM or Bootcamp) since most games are in Windows OS.

No, UX302 is not in Malaysia yet.

Tell us what game titles you want to play so that we know what kind of GPU firepower you need.

Im confused in choosing between GE60 2oe and y510p with sli. since both with same CPU, and y510p with sli is better than single gtx765m, plus y510p sli is cheaper rm3999 compared to rm4299 ge60, so i shud go for y510p sli?
*
there are some very specific rendering software that can take advantage of multiple GPUs (e.g. Octane Render ...).
But there is NO rendering software, as far as I know, that support SLI.

with your budget, nothing from those brands come with SSD factory spec.
Closest:

1. Preferred Brand
2. Budget
3. Usage
4. Preferred laptop/screen size

------------------------------------

1. I can do Acer, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung

2. Up to RM 2500

3. i)   Browsing heavy flash site, flash game
    ii)  Watching HD video
    iii)  Listening to music
iv)  I usually play on DotA 2, Need for Speed series, FIFA, if
GPU can support newer game (on low, mid setting) it will
         very cool.
    v)  1 750 GB HDD? 1 TB?
vi) Able to multi task. So i can switch around 4-5 tab at   taskbar fast enough in a blink of eye xD
vii)Backlit keyboard is a bonus so i don't have to keep my light on during night.

4) I don't have preferred one. If possible, 15.6" screen, but i can also live with 14". Just have to buy HD monitor to watch movie.

Note: You guys can recommend up to RM 3000 value of laptop. I can always save, this is planned for next year as i'm selling my previous 4736 laptop to my workers.

Thanks in advance for those who recommend me.
*
New models get released, come back and ask again next year smile.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Anyway, with your budget, you can probably get laptop spec with GT740M, which should cover your gaming needs.
You don't need powerful CPU, i3 should be good enough. Currently is Haswell gen, if you buy early next year, should still be the same. Broadwell (5th gen) probably will only come out late next year.
If you multi-task, get more RAM. Currently 4GB stick ~ RM100 (RAM price fluctuate, so could be different next year).
Also how "speedy" or "fast" could also due to disc access lag (swap file paging etc), so put money in SSD. Currently 128G ~ RM300, hopefully by the time you buy next year SSD could be cheaper. HDD price is rather cheap now, not much difference between 750GB vs 1TB.
All 14" already come with HD screen (1366x768).

Quadro is normally found in workstation, e.g. Dell Precision, HP Elitebook, Lenovo Thinkpad W.

You can also find in illegear (Clevo) RS series.
www.illegear.com

Quadro is not cheap. You can have a sense of premium Nvidia command by looking at the customisation option in illegear site. Unless you have very specific reason and have good budget, learn to make do with Nvidia GT.

Hey there guys I just want to ask, what laptop should I buy?

I am going overseas next year, to college, and I want to get some recommendations on what laptop to buy. I don't know if I should concentrate on my studies, and get a non-gaming laptop, or game, and get a gaming laptop.

For gaming, I would like a laptop with discrete graphics, 13-14 inch screen, and has to be light in weight. This laptop will also be used for my college, so I don't want to carry around a heavy laptop.

For studies, I will be getting the MacBook Pro which was just realeased, the 13 inch one.

If you choose game please list some recommendations. If you choose studies, do say.

Budget: RM 5000 and less:)
*
not sure we offer life style advices here hmm.gif laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

which country are you going? It could be cheaper to buy overseas (especially US). You also need to think about warranty support if you decide to buy in Malaysia, i.e. need to get models that come with international warranty.

MBP 13"
MacBookPro 13" (Retina Display), i5-4258U + Intel Iris 5100 + 128GB SSD + (2560x1600)@RM4199[1.57kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX

So whatever software you use in your study can be supported by OSX? If not, you need to learn to use VM or bootcamp (for Windows OS).

13 - 14" gaming laptop that is light?
These are available in Malaysia, but read my comment above.
MSI
GE40-2OC, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GTX760M + (1600x900; anti-glare)@RM3499[1.8kg], 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8

Haha. I will ask again. When? January, February? Because i'm thinking to buy during CNY time.

I think i can invest in SSD for laptop system and buy external HDD for movie storage. That skipped my mind when i was writing the question above lol. Lesser file in system, faster and less hassle for CPU to process. Correct me if i'm wrong. Not really a tech savvy but at least i can format and clean my own laptop. biggrin.gif

Also, what kind of brand i should eyeing for? Or it just depends on my liking?

I'll buy a big size monitor to watch movie. Can't buy dekstop because my work require me go here go there.
*
Ask us 1 or 2 weeks before you decide to pull the trigger will be about right smile.gif Will give you plenty of time to do some window shopping to evaluate the models in person.

If you can do clean install on SSD will be good, otherwise you can do "clone" to migrate from HDD (if laptop come with HDD) to SSD.

The brands you mentioned are all pretty ok. MSI line up in Malaysia tilt towards gaming. Samsung don't bring lots of models to Malaysia, but their line up usually has good screen and nice build. Acer and Lenovo are quite competitive in price and spec.
Other brands like Asus, Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba are also interesting.
