Im waiting for Thunderbolt II Drobo. The reason why im leaning towards DAS instead of NAS cause of the thunderbolt speed. The current one already faster than the internal drive. Thunderbolt version II will be 20GBps in both direction. Thats like transfering the whole volume in one unit (4TB x 5 bay) in just one second and vice versa
For the first part, you sound like you know what you want and talk about. Yes, Thunderbolt is fast but are you sure you can transfer 20TB in one second with Thunderbolt? sweat.gif

QUOTE(mintgadget @ Oct 10 2013, 06:24 AM)
To be honest if you are looking for speed I totally agree DAS with Thunderbolt is the way to go. However you will only see the benefit if you copy out the files for "friends" provided they are on thunderbolt too. Torrents are no faster as you would probably know. On the other hand the NAS OS has so much more potential. You have to try it out to see the benefits beside just speed. The new boxes come with 4 lan ports which support LAG and theoretically can peak at 350MB/s read. But like you I too cant wait to try out TB2.
I wish LAG was simple and works in a straight forward fashion. 4 LAN port with teaming will only reach a peak like 350MB/s if you have 4 PCs equipped with 1 Gigabit NIC accessing the NAS simultaneously. Or 2 PCs with dual NICs each in teaming mode accessing the NAS simultaneously. Hope you get the picture. Oh, this assuming you have LAG enabled switch too.

1 PC with 4 NICs in teaming mode accessing the NAS with 4 ports in teaming mode will still give you 125MB/s traffic unfortunately.

At the moment, the only one with 4 port GBit NAS is the Synology DS1513+. If you want more bandwidth point to point, you need to go to 10GBe. That would be super expensive finding 10GBe switch and NICs and NAS with 10GBe connections.

What's the point of all that interface speed if your hdd can't even keep up with the speed?
Yes, that argument used to be valid but not anymore with the advent of SSD equipped systems.

ok need help from NAS sifus here.

i bought and setup probably one of the cheapest entry level NAS in the market:

D-Link ShareCenter DNS-320L.

it works fine with my laptop and PC. i could stream movies from the NAS no problem. but i cant seem to stream avi via android.

i. is the limitation of D-Link's NAS android interface? is there a way around this?
ii. does it have the same problem with iOS?
iii. does other models/brands have the same problem?

everything else works exactly as i expected it would except for the avi streaming.

How are you playing the AVIs from your laptop and PC? Browse and double click on the AVI file on the DLink via Explorer?

What about on your Android?

PC/laptop = using explorer, then double click AVIs or whatever file format. plays on my default media player (VLC).

android = using an app called mydlink Access-NAS. it basically allows me to browse the content of the NAS. opens images and music files no problem. i read online that it also plays mkv file, but no support on avi.

any idea how to get around this apart from dloading the avi to my device to play it?

Notice I mentioned the word HDD, bro. wink.gif And based on what he was posting previously and the fact that he was talking about the typical NAS/DAS use case with 100TB being quoted, I think he was talking about HDDs as well.

Also, even SSDs can't read, let alone write, at the quoted thunderbolt speed of 20Gbps. Hence my earlier statement is still true. tongue.gif

Anyways, I'm not really sure SSDs make sense from a NAS/DAS perspective. Does anyone even sell SSD NAS? Or DAS for that matter? Wouldn't that cost an arm and a leg? And all for what? To just store data? I highly doubt with the current price per GB that SSDs would be competitive in a NAS/DAS use case scenario except for extreme circumstances which are atypical of the average home or office user. And we haven't even gotten into the supporting hardware that would be needed. For example, how many people even have Gb LAN in the first place? Or thunderbolt/USB3.0?

Try to use your android file explorer (if you don't have one, get it) and browse over network to the d-link ip address and see if you can browse the folders inside like you would over windows. (if it works on windows, it should work on android as well).

Play it from there using your normal android video player. See if that is faster. Also, this way means you can play any video file as long as your android video player supports it.

setting up LAG is a piece of cake if your have a managed switch. Managed to achieved peak about 160MB/s on a single PC with 2 NICs and LAG enabled.

what kind of file explorer? i've installed ES file explorer, but when i clicked the AVI file, it say no players supported. but it works fine with MP4.

these are all the AVI files i currently have in local memory. it plays normally using the defaul media player on my phone (Xperia S). but i cant play the same file on the NAS.

currently i'm using DLink N300 wifi router that's physically connected to the NAS via ethernet.

another question: does synology have this problem?

This is a tough one coz cost comes to play. The highest end NAS that can do transcoding will cost you a bomb. Computers are the cheapest solution to be the PMS (Plex Media Server). Running PMS on a NAS unless you have at least a Dual Core 2.4ghz NAS you probably can play 1080p content smoothly, needless to say that is for 1 stream. If you have a few people streaming from your PMS at one time. NAS processors are not powerful enough I believe at this point of time unless is a PC built NAS or the Enterprise level NAS. If you understand how Plex works you will get a better picture. However PLEX is really awesome, the people behind it are just plain "gods"... smile.gif

Haha they are gods, so I guess getting a small form factor PC would be the best solution?

I would personally recommend a mac mini if you have the budget otherwise and Intel NUC is ideal too.
