Hi guys,
I'm thinking of getting a Buffalo LinkStation Pro for home use. It says on the website that it offers simple network storage and backup for all PC and Mac.
Does that mean there will not be any problem for me to upload files to the NAS using a Mac OS and then download them on a Win OS right? What about Ubuntu?

good to know. thanks for the info.
how's your mybooklive so far? happy with the performance? smile.gif
i've had bad experience using WD drives so i'm a bit skeptical about getting a WD mybooklive...

software is good, but i believe my drive is gonna fail me soon, haha! its vibrating while in operation,i think too much transportation knock because i just moved from KL to KK for university, must had bang it a lot even it was wrapped in a thick pillow.haven tested it gigabit capability, but 100mb line can get max theoretical speed biggrin.gif
in the end,software is quite neat,just plug n play,cloud capability is easy to set up,no brainer..but as u mentioned,HDD sucks laugh.gif

sifus pls help me. im in the brink of storage catastrophe i need mooooore spaceeeee

The thing is the more i read the more confused i get. Even this comprehensive write up are being disputed by readers in comment section.

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/a-beginne...vanced-storage/

I have a desktop (hackintosh) just dual core CPU with 2GB ram and 4 Hard disks inside share media with my macbook, iphone, appletv

The stupid desktop is less than RM1000 and it's good as a Thunderbolt DAS and Synology NAS because all the 4 hDDs are internal and the computer is network connected.

My question is why the hell all these so called premium storage cant be DAS and NAS at the same time just like my desktop hackintosh? Or is there any?

I need to buy the lowest storage IMac soon, i need a fast DAS thunderbolt if possible to do video & photo editing and music mixing with the IMac directly to the DAS.

This DAS must also work like a NAS when i off the iMac. It must be able record IP Surveillance Cam, running torrent, and share any format files/media/music via the home network/cloud/internet when im outside the house.

I prefer expandable system to at least 20TB. Ill decide on which suitable RAID to setup for protecting the content without sacrificing speed.

anything like that?

Ok since nobody answer, i did some digging and i think i found feasible solution for DAS + NAS

No need to buy iMac but buy these instead :-

For 300MBps Transfer (USB3.0 & eSata)

and stack it with like these with the computer underneath or vice versa

or expand more and more storage

I think missed out WD, and so regret to find out that both models (Live & thunderbolt) are so expensive to set up 20TB system

user posted image

It's really beyond my understanding why WD is so expensive? i need to buy 5 of these to setup 20TB which the other brands above are far more cheaper!

Seriously consider Synology, it is a great product and the OS is very mature. DS1512+ has expansion capabilities.

Except its not as fast as thunderbolt

Im waiting for Thunderbolt II Drobo. The reason why im leaning towards DAS instead of NAS cause of the thunderbolt speed. The current one already faster than the internal drive. Thunderbolt version II will be 20GBps in both direction. Thats like transfering the whole volume in one unit (4TB x 5 bay) in just one second and vice versa

Ill be using the same computer for torrent and file sharing and do work. Most of these DAS has two thunderbolt ports for daisy-link to at least 5 more units. That will be 100TB and with BeyondRaid you can atleast get 90% of space with Raid protection. And with the said computer linked to network, it'll be the NAS.

To be honest if you are looking for speed I totally agree DAS with Thunderbolt is the way to go. However you will only see the benefit if you copy out the files for "friends" provided they are on thunderbolt too. Torrents are no faster as you would probably know. On the other hand the NAS OS has so much more potential. You have to try it out to see the benefits beside just speed. The new boxes come with 4 lan ports which support LAG and theoretically can peak at 350MB/s read. But like you I too cant wait to try out TB2.

What's the point of all that interface speed if your hdd can't even keep up with the speed?

ok need help from NAS sifus here.

i bought and setup probably one of the cheapest entry level NAS in the market:

D-Link ShareCenter DNS-320L.

it works fine with my laptop and PC. i could stream movies from the NAS no problem. but i cant seem to stream avi via android.

i. is the limitation of D-Link's NAS android interface? is there a way around this?
ii. does it have the same problem with iOS?
iii. does other models/brands have the same problem?

everything else works exactly as i expected it would except for the avi streaming.

When you say you stream via android, what do you mean? Can give more details?

Is it through a proprietary android app by dlink?
