exactly. so shud i just deactivate it first before plug into the other NAS ? Its taking upto 24 hours to repair (from 4TB to 8TB). i still have another 4TB hdd to go. guess i need to deactivate first ? can I deactivate and format the NAS HDD before unplug ?
*
iI would suggest to allow the repair to settle first before doing anything.
What's your rush?

in my experience, the NAS still usable during the repair process

[4TB 3TB 3TB 3TB]

from above configuration my drive 4 is degraded and I want to replace drive 4 with 4TB. however, I understand its better to put the 2 units of 4TB side by side, right ? and how do I do it ?

NAS 1
[4TB 4TB 8TB 8TB)

- Take out 4TB x2
* if this the disk you want to insert in NAS 2 it should be remove properly from NAS 1
* Deactivate, later better format as new drive before insert in NAS 2
- Plug new 8TB x2 (wait to rebuild)

NAS 2
[3TB 3TB 3TB 3TB)

- Remove Disk 1 & 4 (failing) "Replace disk"
- Insert 4TB x2 from NAS 1 (format as new disk) into Disk 1 & 4
- Wait rebuild sweat.gif

I have never format the old HDD before insert into the NAS.

This is my current setup.

[V1-16tb, 16tb, 16tb, 6tb] [V2-2tb, 2tb, 2tb, 2tb]

To change the drive, switch the NAS off, swap out the drive and insert the new. ON it, Log in and follow the drive rebuilt.

Let it finish rebuilt + the checking. Check the file makesure no corrupt. Than start to swap another drive.

I did use the old drive to replace on the 2tb. Never format it.

actually as long as your drive has no partitions setup for synology before you can use the drive and storage manager will be able to handle them. if they were from another volume or pool or different synology, it will be picked up, that is how they handle migrations all volume information is stored in the drive when synology preps it for volume building. if they were used before a simple diskpart and clean volume will kill it and is ready for consumption in your nas

Try both see which one suitable for you.
Having OS/system backup is not good enough, more importantly is will it restore back correctly without issue? If you got device can use for test, try to backup and wipe the OS, then restore.

if you have only a few bad sectors and does not increase over time I suggest you keep it. RMA DOES NOT guarantees you a good drive, most of the time they are not new drives rather repaired or refurbished ones. Synology already allocated 10% of your drive in case bad sectors occurred so that can be mapped as bad and not to write on it. Bad sectors will tend to happen over time but as long it does increase in an alarming rate your drive should be fine.

After all the Hoohaa, I rerun the SMART test on the HDD that reported bad sector and crash my pool. guess what, it says healthy. so I dont believe, rerun SMART overnight, still report healthy. the HDD is a WD 7years. how do I really check ? this HDD just screw up my entire NAS.

I run WINDOWS chkdsk /F also. surface scan. all ok. isnt that when there is bad sector, it will be reported ?

Try use CrystalDiskInfo to see if the HDD is healthy and see if got any of these

Reallocated sector counts. Reallocation happens when the drive's logic remaps a damaged sector, as a result of recurring soft or hard errors, to a new physical sector from its spare ones. This attribute reflects the number of times a remapping has happened. If its value increases, it's an indication of HDD or SSD wear.

Current Pending Sector Count. This counts the "unstable" sectors, meaning the damaged ones with read errors that are waiting for a remapping, a kind of "probation" system. S.M.A.R.T. algorithms have mixed understandings about this particular attribute, as it is sometimes unconvincing. Still, it can provide an earlier warning of possible problems.

Reported Uncorrectable Errors. It is the count of errors that are impossible to recover, and it is useful because it seems to have the same meaning for all manufacturers.

So I run an extensive SMART test. But the result comeback is no problem and no bad sector.

After monitor few day, nothing happen. Anyway decide to change it as I know this WD HDD is almost end of lifespan. It is the last 4 WD HDD to wait for change. OFF the power, take out the old and replace the new.

It is not the smart test problem.

The HDD do have bad sector and increasing. But manageable and between the drive limit percentage. If the bad sector getting more it will alert time to replace.

The average HDD lifespan is 5yrs. My 3 WD HDD die between 5yrs. and this wan last yrs 7. The longest can last and still running is Samsung HDD for 11yrs. Left 3 and die 1.

Having NAS is not cheap. With the choice of cloud now, think twice before get 1.
