Your HD must be in FAT32 format. Unless phone is rooted, you wont be able to read default NTFS formatted drive. That is for Android OS 4.1.2 and below. For 4.2.2 I am not too sure as I do not have any 1TB NTFS drive. My Samsung 1TB ( in Fat32 format) can be read. Anyway power need required from USB harddrives is higher than thumb drives. Depending on your model , sometimes even on FAT32 format you cannot read it unless you can power up your HD separately
