Hello there, a newbie keeper here...just switched from RB to keeper ( at least for the moment) because of nobody wanting to be keeper in my team...
Any useful tips on how not to injure my self when diving and charging in 1-1 situations?
BTW, are Puma gloves good?I bought a pair, Puma Veneno gloves..coz it was cheap, only RM49.Are these good enough, coz i saw the v1.06 which are way more expensive

Wah; didn't realise the GK thread was active. Lemme join; can kar? heh.
Fauxhawk,
As far as I remember; I assume you're talking 'bout field 'keeping, when charging in 1-1 situations; your body must form a "cup", sliding in to scoop the ball. Once the ball is in; you close the body to protect yourself.
Kinda hard to explain; but then again, I haven't played field GK for 'bout 8 years; ever since I tore my knee ligament playing. Stuck to Futsal since 2001, when I came out of "Retirement".
As for gloves; beats me, I don't normally wear one while playing futsal as I feel it spoils the technique; since one normally doesn't train for futsal and playing futsal is the only time you actually train.

Halo. I'm also a goalkeeper. I play both field football and futsal. I've been a keeper since primary school some 15 years ago. I doubt my skills are good, but they're not bad either. My favourite goalkeeper is Bayern's captain Oliver Kahn.
I love playing in goal. They say it takes a nutter to even consider goalkeeping, and I guess it is true to a certain extent. I can't remember how many times I've been kicked in the face or had the wind knocked out of me. But over the years, the worst injuries I've had is broken wrists and twisted knee.

Hi all,
Pretty good to see this topic revived again. I haven't been able to log in regularly since I'm now undergoing a 6-month, full residential course in Intan Bukit Kiara. But I can go home on the weekends though.
I'm the only keeper in the whole course (187 guys, 185 girls), so I feature in every friendly game that we have, & I'm also part of the football club. This morning during the training session I manage to slice some of my skin near my elbow during the penalty shoot outs (in which I saved 3). I didn't realize I was bleeding until the warm down time, the wrist strap on my Lotto G-Force was already red with blood.
Thanks Giotto for the compliments, I'm afraid I won't be able to join U guys until after July.
4 weeks into the course I managed to lose 4 kg edi, so right now I feel lighter. But I was down with a fever this early this week when I felt I'm coming into form nicely, so that bummed me a bit.
1 on 1 situation, my preference is to wait & see rather than go charging into the striker's feet. U only charge if U see that U can get to the ball first. If the striker have the advantage & U rush, chances are they will go around U, lob the ball above U or let U charge & try to earn a penalty. If, when charging U feel U can't get to the ball first, charge with your feet first to discourage the striker. My best bet is to wait & see & react to what the striker does.
Gloves, if possible go for soft latex gloves. Maybe U can check previous posts as I have posted some recommendations before.

QUOTE(FauxHawk @ Feb 23 2007, 05:39 PM) bothmy elbows are bleeding from hitting the ground.any tips on how to land ? If Ur landing on Ur elbows then I guess Ur landing the wrong way. Or Ur elbows in an incorrect position. Quite difficult to explain here, maybe U can find websites or watch EPL games & see how the goalies land after making each save. Yesterday I had a futsal tournament in my course, my team ended up in a penalty shootout to decide 3/4th placing. The last kick of the oppsing team was taken by a rugby player, he hit the ball so hard directly at me, I was trying to avoid it rather than save it. The ball hit my hand somehow & it hurts like hell, I thought my wrist was broken. It didn't, but it still hurts & I had to keep in under wraps. Phew !! Last week I tested one of Puma's new line (not so new actually), the Puma v3.06, costing RM159.90. It had terry cloth backhand, which is very useful if U play in hot conditions, & 4mm supersoft latex with grooves on the fingers. The latex was vey soft, indicating a potentially excellent quality glove. Maybe U guys can check it out when buying a new glove. This post has been edited by tenno: Feb 25 2007, 10:42 AM

tenno,
I had the same thing happen before. I played in a futsal friendly against some guys and one of them was an ex-malaysian u-21 football player with a ferocious shot. One of them dipped unexpectedly and I ended up with a weak wrist which would click when i move it.
You might want to check for clicking sounds first. I've been doing rehab on the wrist for about 6 months now and it seems better.
Fauxhawk,
You're probably scraping your elbow and dragging it across the grass. That's how the burns normally happen. The ideal technique is to skim across the surface and land. Try raising it slightly higher when you're pulling it across. Still happens to me sometimes when I'm not really concentrating.

I play without gloves as well. It's all about technique for shot stopping. For futsal; I find it especially useful to aim for the bottom of the ball using the hand in order to deflect the ball with minimum impact. Almost never attempt to absorb the shot direct using fingers as you'll probably end up injuring something.

Avoid using the fingers and use more of the palm if you're planning to absorb shots directly. For diving saves; try to deflect the ball from the bottom of the ball; or the top. Bottom works best.

Ermm; if you mean the sleeved shirts with pads; They're called goalie jerseys or goalie tops. You can find them in Pertama complex or Al-ikhsan. They're quite hard to find in normal retail shops.
As for helping; obviously. Ultimately the perfect technique is to dive without skinning the elbows; achieved via skimming the surface and landing at one go rather than dragging the elbow through the surface; whereby the friction would tear the skin. But to cater for errors made, wear one since none of us have too much skin to shed and we all make mistakes. heh.

You most probably won't get an injury is you have streched well.
