Hey keepers
Wanna ask something.
Why when i try to tahan the mid-air ball i will slap the ball not catch it.

Mid-air balls ? Catching crosses is it ?

Well, first thing in my mind is that if U can catch the ball properly, most proly Ur not jumping high enuff to get at the ball comfortably, or the ball is too high for U to catch (these 2 are similar ain't it ?). Judgment is very important when going out for crosses. Decide if U have the positional advantage to get to the ball comfortably, hand posture is important as well. If U think U dun have positional advantage (but still want to go for the cross), punching is a better option. Normally if the ball is challenged, it's better to punch. I guess U can watch Jens Lehmann, he's good in coming out for crosses.

As a general rule, a keeper must catch the ball at the highest point possible. & in corners, all balls going into the 6-yard box should be the keeper's.

QUOTE
Still curious though, what's the difference between futsal GK gloves and regular GK gloves. As I've observed futsal gloves they expose the tip of your fingers.

We're supposed to catch the ball with the fingertips (U don't catch the ball with Ur palm). One explanation on why futsal specific gloves are without the tips is that in futsal, most of the time U'll be palming the ball away, not catch the ball. But I think with normal full-fingered gloves U r better protected. Just dun buy those expensive, supersoft palm gloves for futsal, U'll be wasting Ur money. Buy those cheap ones with normal latex (usually on gloves around RM50 or less), Ur glove will last longer.

Gathering...mmm.. We want to just meet up & talk or we want to play futsal ? Let me suggest, we all bring our gloves to the gathering & compare, etc. How about next Sunday 26/11 ? Or Saturday 25/11 ? Somebody suggest a location, around KL is fine.

If you're going for mid-air ball, it depends on your calculations, and your initial response.

As for me, I can't really catch ball, because I haven't grasp the techniques correctly. However, I made it a point that if possible I'll deflect the ball to my defenders to head it away. If the situation seems almost impossible, I'll punch the ball for a corner (That's because corner set pieces is where my old team mates are especially good at, so being a goalkeeper I only make sure I have to rush for the ball.

However, it would be helpful to note that your fingers need to be stretched, not cupped (silly old school coaches).

Especially since you mentioned that you've got fingersavers, its really helpful.

THis 25/26th for a gathering? i'm cool with it. But my lauya umbro glove. haha.

Do U mean while catching ? Coz when catching the ball, naturally U would have to follow the shape of the ball, that is why some gloves are shaped anatomically/pre-curved (Nike Tiempo Grip, T90 & Grip 3, etc). Especially the tip of Ur fingers. When U go for high balls, it is important to make sure U can grab the top of the ball or at least 3/4 of the ball. I've experienced some good quality gloves with excellent latex foam that allows U to grab the ball even if U dun really have full grip (on the ball).

Heh, good good. At least I can learn from the veterans about catching balls.

I'm more conscious about my tendency to punch / parry the ball, but I guess its just that I need to work out on the technique.

Or maybe brute strength.

I can't even kick the ball properly *shy shy*

But at least a goalkeeper must learn to make up where he's short of.

Field or futsal also can, preferably futsal because I play futsal more frequently. Or we can just organise one ourselves laugh.gif

No la, unless we plan to give out certs & stuff. If we do it amongst ourselves, we dun need to do all that. Actually it's a good idea, maybe we can meet up at a field first, I can show U some drills, etc, then adjourn somewhere. How's that ? If mxxuang can't make it this month, then we can push it to around 9/10 December. How's that ?

Ur hands hurt when punching ? Then perhaps something's wrong. Or maybe U punched somebody's face when trying to punch the ball biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Where does it hurt ? U should punch the ball with the flat part of Ur knuckle (s) (is this correct ? it's called knuckle right?). The most likely part that will hurt is the fingers. If that is so, then U'd have to really make a firm grip/knuckles, it shouldn't hurt. Practise by punching the ball into the air repeatedly, so that U'll know which part will give U the strongest punch.

Cool stuff! 9/10 Dec, I'll need to check my schedule, but it should be okay. I'll see, final paper is tomorrow. I'll love to see some of the drills. That would be useful.

@Caonpies:

If your hand hurts, it means you're going for a bad impact. Try using another side, like the side of the palm, or going two-fisted. That way your hands absorb and spread more of the impact, and its less painful that way.

Besides, don't attempt to punch a ball with the bony side of your hands / fingers.

If you still feel pain, maybe you can change the style from punching to parrying.

Are you playing using a bowling ball? blink.gif
Maybe you're not used to it probably. I think the best way is to get used to punching and probably u should do push up using ur knuckles(tae kwan do style)

Sorry, been away 20-22/11 for a course in Kuantan. If U work in govt, end of the year is usually a very busy month with courses, seminars, visits, etc, coz we need to finish our budget allocations. Will be away again 4-8 December in Malacca.

11th is Monday la, dun think it's possible. What if we do it earlier, maybe 2/3 Dec, or later, 16/17 December. The place I have in mind now is the public field in Bkt Jelutong, Shah Alam. The field is good enuf I guess. & after that, there are lotsa mamak in Shah Alam area we can have a drink after that.

So, let's decide when we want to do this. Not limited to forummers though, I guess U can bring along Ur friends as well, keepers preferably.

That's Julie Hoi I believe. If U bring that girl, I'm sure the whole LY.net will come !!

Sunday or Saturday, we'll decide with a week to go I guess. If U have friends then do ask them to come along, it won't be fun if there are just 3-4 of us. Agenda we can decide on the spot.
