hey guys, need some recommendations for a new laptop that i'm looking to get either by this month or next month.

I am an architecture student, so I want a laptop that is capable of running programs like AutoCad, Revit, 3dsMax etc. perfectly. However, my budget ranges from RM3k to RM5k max, which means I cant afford to get a workstation.

So far, I've looked at the Lenovo Y510p, MSI GE60 20e, Illegear RE-15. Initially I was leaning more towards lenovo, but doubts about quality is holding me back. However, it's the cheapest option compared to the other options I've looked at, so I'm in a dilemma right now.

Recommendations and advice needed urgently!! please and thank you!
*
With your budget, you can get a mobile workstation if you want:
HP
EliteBook 8470w, i7-3520M + AMD FirePro M2000 (1600x900 anti-glare) @RM4999, 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7P, anti-glare, 3 years warranty

Lenovo Y510p is fine for your usage:
Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3099[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs
If you have any concern, upgrade the warranty to 3 years on site when you make the purchase.

well i just want to know type of laptop. more on the spec.
1. Preferred Brand -not really (dont want compaq)
2. Budget (RM1000 and below) (aiming for second hand less then a year to 1 year)
3. Usage (music, movie, normal intnet surfing, mild internet game, 50% work (microsoft office)
4. Preferred laptop/screen - size 13-15inch

*
You tell us your spec requirement and budget, but nobody know whether you could get the spec you want for the budget you have for used laptop. It's up to buyer / seller negotiation.

Anyway, for your usage, you can make do with Celeron / Pentium CPU, and Intel HD IGPU.
If you are lucky, you may find sellers who are willing to let go a i5 spec 1 year old laptop for your budget tongue.gif

If you want to, you can get a brand new one with proper warranty. Eg.

Dell
Inspiron 14-3421, 1007U + Intel HD@RM999[1.99kg], Linux, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; W8SL@RM1099

I prefer more colour selections as I'm quite a girly girl lol. Preferably i5. Laptop purpose is quite basic. Mainly for assignment, skype, basic photoshop, online stream & dl movie. Any recommendation? smile.gif thanks guys for your opinion.  biggrin.gif

Anyway, both models you listed are more than sufficient for your usage. Go and look / touch / type / feel / carry / listen to the real things to decide which one you like better.

They are just prolly borrowing the ThinkPad name.
*
Lenovo has to "leverage" the Thinkpad brand (they paid big money for it laugh.gif )
Dell has Vostro, HP has Probook, so Lenovo has to counter with Edge, stick a Thinkpad to make it sound nicer laugh.gif

V series basically is a consumer laptop.

Edge - you have the Thinkpad small business software suite, the fingerprint reader, blah blah blah ...
Built quality is still pretty good, but the screen is really cheap stuff.
And don't drop this on the floor like a T series. My numerous T series had suffered my abuse over the years (fell down 1 flight of stair case, dropped from shoulder height to floor, food and drinks spill, bang on keyboard ... ) and survived.
The Edge 430 I bought for my wife 5 months ago has its bottom top left corner cracked on 1 drop to the floor from table tongue.gif Still running but we can see the mainboard laugh.gif

QUOTE(Xincaberrie @ Aug 15 2013, 12:54 PM)
Hope you don't mind a newbie question, but can you explain the difference to me between msata, sata ll, and ssd in a notebook? Also, what is ubuntu? I'm guessing msata is when a notebook has a HDD (like 500gb or 1Tb),  and just a tiny bit of ssd (8gb, 24gb, or 32gb) to cache files for faster start up.  Is this also known as a hybrid drive, like in the new Sony Fit14? Does it make the performance of a notebook almost as fast as a full ssd one?

Okay, I'm trying this again since the only recommendation I got earlier was for heavy gaming laptops, and that's not what I'm really going for. I want a fast, sleek, not too heavy and bulky multimedia laptop, good performance but no need for overkill, as I'm not a heavy gamer.

1. Preferred brand : Apple, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba (can consider Acer and Asus too)
2. Budget: Range between RM2800 to RM3300, if necessary maximum budget RM3800.
3. Usage: office work, streaming movies on youtube, torrenting, playing HD videos and some games like simcity.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14 or 15 inch; good display that is not too reflective; reasonably good sound for playing music is appreciated. Last but not least, a good keyboard and trackpad. No overheating problems. Nice to have backlit keyboard but not a must.
*
mSATA, SATA - these are port that connect devices (mainly storage). The pathway that data flow to/from storage to be used by CPU / GPU / RAM .... The faster the port, the quicker the data flow. We have SATA I, II, III
SSD - Solid State Drive. A storage device made up from NAND (same thing in your CF card, USB drive, SD card ... ). A lot faster than HDD, but a lot more expensive on dollar/capacity basis. It is so fast that it is saturating the SATA port and industry are bring in new "port" standard in order to fully utilise its speed.
You can has big capacity mSATA SSD like 128G.
The caching was popular since SSD was relatively expensive. But SSD price are dropping fast year on year. 128G ~ RM300, 256G ~ RM600. 2 years ago, RM600 could NOT buy us a 128G SSD laugh.gif There are 1TB SSD now going for RM1800, and in 3 years time we can properly buy them for RM600 rclxms.gif
Hybrid Drive is a HDD that has a built-in SSD.
mSATA SSD caching can never really achieve the full responsiveness of installing all OS and apps on SSD, since caching is only storing a copy of the most frequently used data on the small mSATA SSD, if you happen to call for data that is not cached, you are falling back to HDD crawling.
You may have seen some benchmark where Hybrid Drive that is touted to be as fast as SSD, but that is because SSD is capped by the bandwidth of the SATA port.

Just an observation - it seems like Samsung, Sony and Toshiba are not very popular notebook brands, at least not here in this forum. Not many recommendations.
*
Samsung - nice laptops, mostly matte screen (I like). But not many models in Malaysia. Cheap models can't compete spec/dollar wise. Great expensive models hardly be found in Malaysia hmm.gif
Sony - nice laptops. Cheap models can't compete spec/dollar wise. Have lost a bit of those Sony magic over the years. But the pink colour is always attractive to girl tongue.gif
Toshiba - latest batch is getting a lot better, especially those that come with 3 years standard warranty (longest in Malaysia market for consumer class laptop) thumbup.gif

Hello everyone! I will be getting my first laptop and I honestly can't decide on one.

1.brand - preferably Asus/acer/Lenovo. Other brands are fine as long as they're good
2.usage - college student daily use. Use Microsoft office, Internet and Skype only. Not much. Preferably light and simple. Windows 8 touch screen
3. Price - around 2.5k
4. Screen size- around 14" would be good enough smile.gif

Any recommendation? biggrin.gif I kinda locked my eyes on Acer V5-474PG. What do you guys think? smile.gif

1. Preferred Brand: any
2. Budget: 3k+
3. Usage: studying and for a program such as autocad
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 13 or 14

should i go for apple?
*
For your budget, you can afford these Apple:
MacBookAir 13", i5-4250U + Intel HD5000 + 128GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM3299[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookAir 13", i5-4250U + Intel HD5000 + 256GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM3899[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookPro 13", i5-3210M + Intel HD4000 + (1280x800)@RM3699[2.06kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, Mac OSX

For AutoCAD usage, either you can get the OSX compatible version of AutoCAD, or you probably need to get a copy of Windows OS and use bootcamp to dual boot the MacBook.

And if you do any 3D CAD, Intel HD4000 or HD5000 is a little bit weak (can work, just slow).

That will be T440(U/S) coming in around Oct this year if we are lucky. If not, probably next March/Apr hmm.gif
But I'm a bit apprehensive since the X240s and T440s ultrabook has gone trackpoint button-less doh.gif (I love trackpoint, but I still can't get used to trackpoint without dedicated buttons cry.gif )

Dear nexus2238 & [PF T.J.] Sifu,

I just bought myself a new Lenovo Z400T few days ago, because can't wait of the Z400T Haswell refresh, somemore price drop from RRP 2399 to 2199 already, so end up bought it. tongue.gif

So the question is, should I extend for another 1 year Lenovo warranty service? I most of the time use this laptop within Malaysia. hmm.gif
*
QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Aug 16 2013, 02:05 PM)
How much does it costs? If its around RM150 or so then I would say its worth it nod.gif
Notebooks will have higher failure rates between year 2-3 as compared to year 1-2  hmm.gif
*
QUOTE(ytlay @ Aug 16 2013, 02:57 PM)
Its worth to upgrade warranty to 3 years carry-in for RM70 or 3 years on-site for RM165 for Lenovo U, Y & Z series for peace of mind.  smile.gif
*
yup, like the other sifus, I like the idea of extending the warranty period for 1 more year and upgrade it to on site for ~ RM150. I did that for my Y580 (currently with my cousin). The E430 which came with 1 year on site I also extended it to 3 years on site for RM200.
The Z400T, which run quite hot (especially if you game long hour tongue.gif ) and has a touch screen (which is even more prone to potential poke poke hazard), getting on site warranty is worth it.

laptop is expensive compared to desktop. Your budget may not get you the power that you used to in desktop tongue.gif
If you appreciate good and accurate colour reproduction on screen, consider this:

www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080;matte)@RM3599[Onkyo], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ][/color]
Illegear RE-17, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080)@RM3799[Onkyo], 4GB, 500(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ
Opt for the 95% NTSC gamut screen panel, calibrated, and it will be the laptop with best screen you can get with your budget smile.gif

Can check with Prince J here in LYN, he is from illegear.

it's a matter of perspective.
If you play in HD (1366x768), then you can live with GT750M at high setting.
If you play in FHD (1920x1080), you probably should look at something like this to play in high / max setting:
www.illegear.com
Illegear RS-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX770M + (1920x1080;matte)@RM5499[Onkyo][3.1kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4930MX][GPU options: Nvidia GTX780M, AMD HD8970M]
Go with HD8970M or GTX780M

can't comment since you did not specify your usage and budget. Moreover, G4/500S has multiple specs in Malaysia market.

Heard G500S got overheating issue and a few consumer returned bek the unit in 1-2 days based on research done online.

Expected Specs:
at least i5-3230M + Nvidia GT720M, 4GB(1 slot), at least 500GB

Budget: not more than RM 1699

with your budget, that G series is probably the best spec you could get.

5. Need windows only unfortunately.

Appreciate all your recommendations based on the above spec, I do a lot of presentations and some amount of php and .net programming. Need something lightweight to travel. Thanks.

Good budget.
If you can wait, wait till Oct/Nov this year for Haswell spec ultrabook / hybrid to come to market, you can expect much better battery running time compared to Ivy Bridge spec models now.

Hello all sifus,

1. Preferred Brand - Asus/ Lenovo
2. Budget - Not more than RM2200
3. Usage - movie (i watch a lot!!), music, browsing
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14"

Prefer longer warraty period and light laptops (below 1.8 kg), with i5 processor

Thanks for recommendations! biggrin.gif

But you don't need i5 CPU biggrin.gif
