ok, you need to set your expectation properly tongue.gif

1. 15" is normally heavy, the lightest 15" around in ~ 2.2kg (excluding adapter). So if you want light weight, start from 14" or lower size.
2. Gaming on laptop is expensive. And laptop that has discrete GPU to play Guild Wars 2 at medium setting smoothly won't be cheap, will not be too light (otherwise may not have enough space to put in reasonable thermal dissipate solution).
3. Laptop with SSD as standard spec are probably expensive. You could probably buy a laptop without SSD and upgrade aftermarket without voiding laptop hardware warranty (128G ~ RM300, 256G ~ RM600).
4. Not many consumer class laptop come with matte screen. Samsung probably - but they don't bring in too many models to Malaysia. So you probably have to look at some specific consumer class models that pop up with matte screen from time to time, or go business class laptop (but these are probably more expensive, and with your budget, probably won't be spec with good enough GPU to play Guild Wars 2).
5. ASCII keyboard?  hmm.gif You mean you need to type in ASCII characters? Then any normal keyboard will do, but of course laptop with dedicated numpad make it slightly easier, just "ALT+(number combo)". But dedicated numpad is normally found in 15", and 15" is not light laugh.gif (if you go with 14", then get an external USB numpad, the Logitech is good)

Currently, the models that come closest to your requirement (but look at their weight laugh.gif )

Asus
N550JV-CN077H, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard

MSI
GE60K, i5-3230M + Nvidia GTX660M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM2899, 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8, 2 years warranty
GE60-ONC, i5-3230M + Nvidia GTX675M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM3299, 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8

www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080;matte)@RM3599[Onkyo], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ][/color]

But laptop models get obsolete really fast. Come back and ask again after you save up in a few months smile.gif

Haha... well, I did not expect all my requirements to be met, honestly, but thanks for giving me a better idea of what to expect. I guess I'll probably go with a 15" laptop and just like... live with the weight >_> as I'd really like to have the ASCII numpad and better cooling. Will take your suggestion re: SSD and just not worry so much about the matte screen. Quick question: how much would it cost me to upgrade the RAM to say, 6-8GB? Or should I just stick to the 4GB? Oh, also, what sort of battery life can I expect on these machines? (Yes, total noob when it comes to laptop, really...)

You've been very helpful, many thanks! smile.gif

1. Preferred Brand - MSI or Asus or lenovo.. but personally love msi
2. Budget - 3k +
3. Usage - Gaming and programming
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 15.x would be sweet, but anything dat suit dat budget

Prefer thin and cool design.. the thinner the better.. also hope for a laptop dat wont overheat too much when gaming..
*
if you are looking for gaming laptop, remember this:
The thinner the design, the worse the thermal profile laugh.gif
Among the 3 brands you specified, Asus G series has the best cooling solution.
MSI GE is pretty bad in term of thermal profile, GT series is better but those with really high end GPU was called "a hair dryer" by one of the forumer laugh.gif
Lenovo Y series also is not that good.
Just get a good external cooling solution (cooling pad, table fan ... )

4G stick is ~ RM100, 8G stick is ~ RM200. But RAM price fluctuate a lot, so by the time you buy it may be different.
For laptop with Haswell CPU (ix-4xxxx) (which are the one that you will probably buy later), most are spec with DDR3L, which is slightly more expensive sweat.gif

Battery running time vary much from models to models (mainly due to battery capacity). For Ivy Bridge spec laptop, 3-4 hours normal usage. For Haswell, we have seen some great improvement like 4-6 hours normal usage. And you need to learn to fiddle with "power plan / profile". And don't even think about gaming on battery power, it won't last more than 30 mins laugh.gif

Hi guys, i need some recommendations on the most suitable laptop for chemical engineering student.

Brand: Any except acer (i need a laptop with good international warranty especially in the UK)
Processor: i7
Usage: Simulation + designing software
Screen Size: 14" or 15.6"
Budget: Below 3.5k

And also it is advisable to get a laptop with built in or detachable battery ? (As simulation program can sometimes run for a few hours, my main concern is that if i were to get a laptop with built in battery, then i will have to keep charging the battery while my simulation runs when i go for classes which might take be almost 5-6 hours, and i am afraid that this would affect the battery life in the long run.)

So, i am really hoping that someone could recommend a few laptops model which is suitable for me.

Thank you for your time. smile.gif

Btw, was looking at the slightly cheaper i5 version of the Asus N-series that you recommended - mostly the same specs with slower processor, but gives me more room (budget) to fiddle with the stuff I want to add. Would it be a decent choice?

No, I'm not a re-sellers.
If you can wait, wait. But gaming laptop models are mostly refreshed with Haswell CPU already anyway.

No. OS mostly are NOT installed on the 32G mSATA SSD on factory setting. It is generally used for caching.
For certain models, you can go into BIOS and turn the caching off and make the small mSATA SSD available for storage.

Ivy Bridge - the generation of Intel CPU that carry i3/5/7-3xxxx.
Haswell - the newer generation of Intel CPU that carry i3/5/7-4xxxx. Main feature - improve battery running time a lot.

Do you mean this one?
N56VB-S3070H, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2899[/b][2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 750GB, W8

1 thing I forgot to mention, gaming performance depends a lot on the resolution that you play in.
For Guild Wars 2, if you play at FHD (1920x1080), at medium setting, you need a really powerful GPU.
If you play at HD (1366x768), at medium setting, you can make do with a lot less tongue.gif with GT740M, can expect ~ 40fps.

You are right, Asus G series Haswell spec still not pop up in Malaysia. But expect them to be slightly more expensive than current Ivy Bridge G series when it land in Malaysia (MYR really depreciate a lot lately)

edit:
GE60-2OC, i5-4200M + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM3099,8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8, steel series KB

my apology. the RM3.1k GE60 is spec with i5-4200M. Good enough to pair with GT750M for gaming purpose.

Intense rendering for extend period of time - Need very good external cooling for laptop (e.g. cooling pad, table fan ... ) or you may find a dead machine when you get back tongue.gif
Detach the battery and run on AC is good to preserve battery charging cycle, but if AC power get cut off, say bye bye to your simulation. So it is a pro / con that you have to consider.

All brands has international warranty, just that some come standard, some you have to pay to upgrade tongue.gif

Asus (please confirm it is 2 years International warranty)
PRO45VJ-V0049X, i7-3520QM + Nvidia GT635M@RM3099[2.4kg], 8GB, 750GB, W7P

Dell (extend standard 1 year warranty to 3 years for ~ RM300, it become international warranty)
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M@RM2799, 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm); backlit keyboard optional, W8
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB, backlit keyboard optional, W8

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Huh? don't understand.
For those mSATA SSD, you either use it for caching or use it for storage.
