At approximately 8.20 pm yesterday, 11 October 2013, we experienced a well control incident at a drilling rig working at the South Furious platform, located approximately 80km offshore from Kota Belud, North Sabah.

South Furious and the neighbouring Barton field were immediately shut down.

All personnel on board the drilling rig and South Furious platform, including Shell personnel have been safely evacuated. 2 liferafts were launched at 8.50pm and they were saved by JM Bayu and tug boat 2 hours later. Thankfully everyone is safe and accounted for.

Lots of activities. Good that everyone is safe.

Was there any BOP?

Bro....if you are planning to further your study i.e 2nd degree or Masters etc, I can't really comment as I don't know if there is such specific course offered.

What I had mentioned earlier just one of the career focusing on the deepwater field. If talking about 'deepwater' itself, it is too general. It can be deepwater drilling, deepwater pipeline installation, deepwater platform or wellhead, and etc. It is also which area are you interested in whether doing design & engineering, construction, installation, commisioning, operations etc...

And as mentioned above, there are A LOT OF companies out there that provide services or doing business in deepwater field. Whether Malaysian companies, international companies based in Malaysia, as well as international companies oversea. Some of the international companies in Malaysia not only doing job for Malaysia water but also oversea, I know Aker Solution Malaysia currently doing job for Brazil Operations, SBM Malaysia doing FPSO Angola or Australia, Technip has sent some of the teams to Korea shipyard and etc..

Latest news about Technip in Rigzone:

www.rigzone.com/news/oil_gas/a/129585/Technip_Bags_Subsea_Gig_for_Delta_House_Field

For drilling, there are operating companies that doing planning for deepwater drilling, drilling companies doing drilling as per programs (here we are talking about Subsea Engineer), service companies (Slb, halliburton, BH, Weatherford etc) that provide drilling tools, ROV company that constantly monitor the riser, subsea BOP and wellhead, Drilling and Well Control Equipment Manufacturer (GE, NOV, Cameron, Aker) that also provide field service engineer and specialist onboard of drilling rigs.

Here is one of the programme that I think might be helpful to know better about the Subsea Engineer's work. In US, they have one-year program for the candidates to become Subsea Engineer.

Hey bro, first of all, i really thank you for your time and effort to write me this very informative post! notworthy.gif
Well, I am a mechanical engineering student and i am interested in OnG.
Based on your experience in this field, do you mind recommending any path or career that is good?
Like for eg. What should i study? What qualification should i get other than a mech. eng. degree (For instances, steam eng. cert?)? Which company is good in terms of salary etc? Which company do you recommend for a freshie that can learn as much thing as possible?

Besides, I also heard ppl saying that working in OnG, you can work for 1 month and get the other month holiday, is that true?

I have to disappoint you on this. Oil and Gas industry is HUGE. It is really up to you. For instance, if I tell you to go for design or engineering, people from construction will disagree with me and list down all their reasons. All have their pros and cons…do the reading and research, also the important is to know your strength and weakness. Do not choose for the sake of popular or money…I believe all areas in OnG pay you good money if you have a right skills, attitude and networking.

And yes, it is true. Normally drilling rig crews and some of other offshore jobs working 4-weeks on and 4-weeks off. Some with fix schedule and some are not...

At West Engineering/ModuSpec (now under LR), they have one-year program and maybe after that become junior Subsea Engineer. I was informed that the program will load the candidates with A LOT of information and hands-on on real well control equipments from various makers. I dont know the background of the candidates.

In my company, we have 2 to 3-years program of Subsea - Engineer Trainee.

I noticed those who have spent half of their work lives offshore tend to be a bit weird and "loose".

I guess the long duration time spent offshore might have affected their mental state. hmm.gif
