220 itself is a huge number. hahaa. your batch will be the biggest in the history of FoM. not intended anyway, they've entered/gt the offer letter. the foundation results for almost all batches is already out.

According to the aimst staff, all places for the dentistry r taken up by their foundation students..
Wow, that is unbelievable, the students there love dentistry more than medicine...
Haihzzz, no wonder they offered me mbbs instead of dentistry...=.=!!!!

What about Pharmacy? Methinks it's the same case. Won't be surprised if it's so. XD But still hoping that I can get in... as I've not yet even applied yet but am thinking this through very deeply. hmm.gif

dentistry seats are only limited up to 70 (or was it 50?) if i've not mistaken, wherelse medicine has up to 220. the course is getting 'hot' nowadays, there are only 3 private dental school in m'sia and up to 14 medical schools. so, what do you think?

Before i had sent in my application form. the staff from the student recruitment division told me that usually there were 10 to 20 places of dentistry, which were not taken by their foundation student , available for outsiders and they would choose external students based on merit and first come first served basis. At that time, i thought that my chances of getting a place were still there since i sent in my application right after i got my a levels' result, which was on march. Well, at least my application fees is not wasted as they are still able to offer me a course even though i didn't apply for that.

Hi..

I received an offer from AIMST to do my MBBS in Aug 2009.
Does anyone know if graduates from AIMST can choose to do their masters (specialist) overseas instead of queuing up for masters in the local universities??

As like all prospective MBBS students, I'm worried about my future after I graduate from AIMST. sad.gif

So, any answers will really be helpful.

Thank you.. biggrin.gif

much of the info is available in the med student threads...

aimst degree is NOT recognised by any other country except msia.........

however, there are exams one can sit for, depending on the country one wants to go to.......but it is a difficult and long and expensive process.........and there are some exams which aimst graduates cannot sit for, as the university is not listed in their list of 'acceptable' unis...........

realistically, one will need to consider oneself tied to msia with this mbbs..........

What limeuu said is what will happen UPON graduation from AIMST. if you do not intend to practice locally, the chances of you being accepted to practice oversea is very minimal. There are few entry qualification test available though such as the USMLE (US), PLAB(UK), AMC(OZ) etc. You may TRY to sit for them if you're really into working abroad though.

HOWEVER to talk about the Masters programme, you can opt for the overseas masters examination such as the MRCP, FRCP or FRCS. Other pathway is to get to yourself into the local MMED programme. As long as you've finished your 2 years housemanship and 2 years compulsory government services in local public hospitals. So there are no worries about that. Entry into masters programme takes into account of many other factors as well (besides recognition), such as the availibility of seats, quota, your personal competence etc.

My personal opinion is, do not worry about your masters yet when you have yet to entered/finished your undergraduate programme. You should not be worried about not getting a place for masters training if you're really competent. So, study hard and learn/practice as much as possible throughout your 5 years of studies. wink.gif You will get the chance to take up the specialist programme eventually.

Thanks to limeuu and csrulez.. biggrin.gif Its nice to know that I'll have such caring seniors when I start my degree in a brand new environment.. biggrin.gif

What you guys said is very true. I am planning to practice in Malaysia but I've heard cases of MOs who could not get to study the masters programme that they want locally (ie in UM, UKM) because of quota and the Malaysian system. Personally, I've lost all faith in the Malaysian system. They do not seem to appreciate the talent that most Malaysians have. They're more concerned about 'status' than actual intelligence.

So I'm wondering if a degree from AIMST is recognised enough for me to do my masters overseas. I just wanna make sure I have more options once I've completed my degree so that I will not be stuck. Taking tests such as MRCP, FRCP or FRCS is more general than masters. I'm thinking if i found a field that I want to specialize in, I'll definitely need to take a masters degree.

I know I'm worrying too much into the future, but then again, who is not? wink.gif

Thanks very much for the answers and clarifications.. biggrin.gif

p/s: Sorry bout the rantings of our BolehLand. Just had to express my feelings after such disappointment.

you are confused as to what medical postgraduate education is like.......they go by different names in different countries.......for uk/australasia it's by membership and fellowships......there is no masters, except as an academic qualification (ie, an extra degree, does NOT confer recognition as a specialist).......in us, it's board certification........

for msia and spore, it is by 'masters', but this is NOT the same as the academic masters.......it has the same requirements of training and exams as the mrcp/frcs but it just means it is under the jurisdiction of the 3 'senior' unis (ie um. ukm and usm)........

to the profession in general, the mrcp/mrcog/frcs is generally regarded as more desirable and higher quality than the local masters.......because they are internationally acknowledged and recognised......spore realised this, and they thus have conjoint exams with other professional colleges, and award double diplomas (ie the spore mmed as well as a foreign membership or fellowship).......

most countries have an extra layer of 'control' over who can be a specialist, and the uk now have the cst cert (completion of specialist training).....and msia have started the nsr (national specialist register)......spore has membership/fellowship of the academy of medicine spore......

as to having more options, like said above, you are basically stuck in msia with aimst mbbs......if you want more options, you will need to graduate from a more internationally recognised medical school.......

It's not cramped at all...each of us will have a table,a chair,a wardrobe and a bed....it's actually a unit with 3 rooms in it, a pantry n a living hall. if u r staying 4 in a room, there will be 4 toilets n 4 bathrooms with 2 bathrooms equipped with water heaters......fyi,there are some photos in the aimst web site...perhaps u can have a look at those photos becoz it's really hard to explain.....
