frame crack is different story.. most just creaks and you discover the issue.
handle bar is whole different story... it breaks.. you fall straight with ur face down..

Wow... But a crack carbon frame or handlebar can shed the entire time out of his life laugh.gif

If ride around taman and gravel, just get cheap bike minus the unknown carbon handlebar. It can even be more dangerous riding on road, carbon bar snap... Lose control... Bang car or tiang rclxub.gif falling down on dirt is more comfortable than road sweat.gif

how to poison him? he wants to build his own bike on the cheap with dodgy china mali carbon bar . now tell us just want to ride around taman with dodgy china mali carbon bar. so i think we should give him standard MTB heaven greeting for this kind of FAQ which is pick the cheapest bike in the colour he like.
and please dont give answer like I buy ALphard coz i can mah! just confuse the poor fella even more.
better to say, even though i can afford a roadbike i dun wanna coz i am not GAY!

minor confession, i am considering putting slicks on my beloved HT so i can go ride around my taman and up the Old Pahang trunk road in Gombak faster than 1 hour 15 minutes on my FS Anthem X3.

what can you get for new at 4k price line?
i speaking as a noob coz i have ever only bought 4+1 bikes in my life. the +1 bike is my wife punya but she never ride give my FIL ride.
discounting all other bits, what fork and drivetrain can you get on a new 4k bike, i think that will give a you a good guideline. i say this because all other bits you can change for very little money or at least without Finance Minister to sign off. hehe
oh, and size 18, sounds big, you a big fler?

easy! a bike with a light overall weight and big fat tyres. by light i mean a hardtail bike around 26 pounds with at least a Deore drivetrain. why light, so it will not feel like hell when you ride. fat tires give good road resistance so will help you train up for the trails and they are nice cushy on trails smile.gif

If ride in taman, I would get a cheap Lerun bike. put mud guard, and maybe a basket in-front.
Both wheels are bolted not open hand type.
I can go shop buy things and just lock it up anywhere without worry that my bike will be stolen or someone might steal my aluminum wheel to sell as scrap.

The paint need not to be shiny, the more scrap (not rusted) it look the better. At least I know I don't need to walk back after buy things and still got a basket to put things.

Oh ya... forgot... fixed with bike stand....!!

You guys might be very experience mountain bikers, but reading some of your post just show how childish and disrespectful some of you are.

Being a knowledgable mountain biker means being able to share useful infos to anyone from beginner to the advance biker. Not making cocky statement like getting bolted wheels, basket in front, mud guard etc.

For eg. a jogger in taman should deserve a pair of good shoes to protect the knees etc just as much as an athlete.

lightning69, please don't take it too personal la....
Everyone starts somewhere too... I know people who start from RM500 bike also people who start from RM15000 bike. Most of the RM15000 bike become a white elephant else the RM500 bike guy has upgraded using a RM8000 bike for safety and lightweight. I also know uncle DIY cnc own bicycle parts and the bike is just 8kg!!!! shocking.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
Just don't over killed, expensive does not mean good; but good will not be cheap.
Of course if you have extra to spend then sure you can go for expensive things.
Just do some studies will help you get the right tools for the purpose.
Is the rider that makes the ride go, not the other way round.
As you develop your skills, you will appreciate the expensive and least expensive things.

You got your point too, Kancil is never safer compare to BMW if kena bang. That I totally agree. So... hmmmmmm maybe a Nissan Amera will be better than Kancil.... hmm.gif hmm.gif hmm.gif hmm.gif

dickybird:

Aiya... just to say how i feel only....
Really la... I will not ride my expensive bike to go buy things nearby...
Get my point? I will not feel safe to leave the bike alone even lock to a rock...
I see many uncle or auntie cycle old bike everyday and those bike like last forever.

A car is a mean of transport....
Example: I will ride a kancil to go pasar or send kids to school, save fuel and cheap also if leave the kancil unlock i know it will still be there.
But if I am going for long distance, I would think of getting a more comfortable and safer car.
If i go offroad more often, i would get a 4x4.
Just my point of view.... to fit the purpose.

No offence cause there's many rich people who use Ferrari to send kids to school or go market la cause it has become a status issue.
just my 2 cents.

Lets see...
The team ver, the Recon fork is okay, decent entry level rims, drivetrain is okay, hate the brakes. At 26 pounds for a HT... Erm...
The comp ver, the Epicon fork is the best entry level air sprung fork, drivetrain X5 so so..., hate the brakes. At almost 28 pounds... Gulp... Heavy IMO as that's the weight of my AM full sus.

My opinion... From what I feel
I've tested both Shimano and sram drive trains. Like sram for the positive clicks/shifting but don't really like the quality except for the higher range models (X9 and above). sram FD shifting sucks to me. Shimano shifts with less effort but feedback from shifting is a little muted. Other than that very reliable.
On brakes, the newer shimano brakes are really good. Decent amount of stopping power. Reliable and low maintenance with mineral oil. I have a love hate relationship with avid brakes. The stopping power can be very good. Just need to maintain it regularly by bleeding every 6 months or so to keep it in good shape. More if you ride in plenty of dirt and use a lot. Caliper pistons can get stuck one side causing uneven brake bias on disc after a while. Usually if you ride lots of muddy and dirty conditions. The DOT brake fluid does not lubricate the caliper piston square seals and with dirt can cause piston to bind a little. Unless you have the knack to service your brakes regularly, go for shimano brakes.

I would get a bike with at least a shimano slx rear drivetrain, slx brakes, epicon fork and decent rims to begin with. Well it is just my opinion. Go get a feel/test/ride various bikes first. Your choice anyway. Think I saw a polygon carbon HT, with fox fork but regular deore components for somewhere 4k or below... cant quite recall. Check rodalink... Sometimes they've got some unbelievable discounts on bikes and good deals.

I think is in somebody price range smile.gif
