Our torts are captive bred from one of the members here at LYN. she so kindly sold us her babies. Then she regret! haha and wants them back. Btu we love them alot and don't plan to give them back.

They are indian stars. the other is an african sulcata.

The size of our tank was specially made in Aman Suria. It's an aquarium shop that custom makes tanks. Total cost is about RM150. Size is special I think approx 4 feet x 1.5 feet. It was built custom to suit the cupboard. We hang a heat lamp from the top and clip on a UV supplement lamp on the side.

Artificial plants were bought from Mydin. If I'm not mistaken they are ferns. Stuck on with the silicon glue. If you shop in Mydin near kota raya they have tons of fake plants which are super cheap.

We created little grass banks to "break" apart the vast space as well. Makes the tank seem larger for them and can hide more. Bought the grass from Mydin also.  then made some cement and stuck the grass in. We hope it gives them a more outdoor feel.

AFter experimenting with many many many substrate... We had woodchip (lasts the longest), to coco coir, to forest moss..and plastic mat, we found that most easiest to clean and maintain is newspaper. lol.

Woodchip when they were younger.. we only changed once in 3 months. Woodchip we stopped cause scared it was not stable enough for them. They walked around very unsteady.

Coco coir and forest moss we change every month. but casue of our weather and humidity.. got fungus growth and became very gross. Got bugs also.

Newspaper we change every other week (fortnightly) or when required. which is more hygenic. The only sad thing for them is that they don't get to burrow much anymore. and when they do they mess up all the newspapers.

I'm using black soil mix with coconut coil as their substrate (didn't change since July last year tongue.gif ). But I realized it makes my tortoises dirty and I have to constantly clean my balcony. Am thinking to change my substrate soon. Do you think artificial grass (can be found at nursery selling by the length) is good?

Let me know if you come across anyone selling female star with a size of more than 4 inches.

Cheers.. biggrin.gif

Actually we were contemplating artificial grass for a while. It should be good. Easy to clean also .. and less messy. When we used coco coir.. Our torts always got so messy.. and looked so dirty! they would also track in all the dirt into the water pond and make that cloudy. Gave us such a headache!

I think that since artificial grass has no absorbancy, you can just lay it on your existing substrate so that they will be less messy but whenever they pee or spill water, the excess moisture is absorbed. Also enhances humidity.

The only prob would be that they can't burrow anymore. unless you leave one patch of soil for them to dig around.

u still looking for female? haha If we find also we'd like to keep it for our own!

The second picture is of greater plantain - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantago_major

Yes, soil is really messy and I have to change the water dish daily.

I like the artificial grass but for the measurement that I want, it will cost about MYR 350. Plus the white thingy in the pee will definitely stick on the grass & hard to clean. I will need to leave a gap with the tile (at the balcony) so that water can filter through the grass.

I know 1 or 2 seller (based in penang) but their price is expensive. Let's see how it goes.

Tq for all the advice.. biggrin.gif

Hey, I just liked your Facebook Page and really amazed with your setup. Man, that is sweet home for them. I am very keen in following your tortoise's updates!

Anyway, I just brought a turtle bale for my little Egyptian and he seems loving it so much. Previously I though using soil (the one that almost same with on the dessert) is better for him, but he always look distress and finding a spot to hide. So a slight thick turtle bale make him able to hid himself and making him feels secure, it seems smile.gif

U can try Max reptiles in Old klang road. He'll know if the russian or greeks are not allowed. (not sure).

If allowed, I'm sure you just have to wait for a shipment. biggrin.gif

Just saw his shipment of adult sulcatas! Awesome.

I don't quite understand the year is the import of any kind of tortoise as pet. I think still got restrictions.

I've seen so far.. legally are Leopards, Sulcatas, Egyptians, Aldabras, and Greeks. I think redfoots also I've seen before. Most common are Leopards and sulcatas.

Stars and Radiated are not allowed to be imported in and sold at shops I think. But if ex-owners selling I think should be okay. Not too sure.

We got our sulcata from a forumer here nonono. Good torts. you can pm him if he has any currently or when some stock will come in.

Thanks for the compliment!

We actually built a second storey for them.. Which they used as a hide, and also to climb up for exercise. They were really scared to climb up at first but they became pros very soon after.

Cause our structure was made from plastic boards..and masking tape...and some silicon glue... it didn't last very long... before it was shakey and was delegated to the dustbin. tongue.gif

But they sure had fun exploring! I think there's a video somewhere where they climb up and down.

Btw.. what is a turtle bale? Torts love their "hide". that's good that he has one. They will feel safe in it.

My wife made our torts first "hide/hut" from soft clay bought from 100yen or daiso shop which is covered in pebbles and covered in acrylic paint. (not recommended for high moisture enclosures as the clay is far too soft)(my wife very free to do arts and crafts) . Alternatively can just cut a container or a half clay flower pot as his hide.

Hi all,

I got 4 juvenile star tort from a friend today and they are in bad condition as he totally has no experience in keeping torts. I have never had such young torts before as mine are at least few months old when I got them. All of them are about 4-6cm and I believed that they are about 1-3 months old. Would like advice here on how to maintain and keep them growing..I have kept them away from my collection of russians and sulcacta as they are so small and have read that they may catch some virus from the different breed. 3 of them has been eating but very minimal activity. I do sun them often and introduced calcium with D3 and multi vitamins hoping to boost up their health.Any kind advice is greatly appreciated...

Too many thing may cause it - Non-eating , sickness , water temperature ...........!!

Without more information I can only guess - turtle too young and already sick when bought !!
