Systematics

This species is the only living member of the genus Carettochelys, the subfamily Carettochelyinae and the family Carettochelyidae, though several extinct carettochelyid species have been described from around the world. Some literature claims two subspecies, but a recent paper rejects this.

Just 1 type !!

Male do that to "hypnotized" the female to stop , so he can mount her to mate !! Thus male has longer front nails - a foreplay !!

RES male start to do that when they are quite young , some as smallas 4"

From the looks at them both scratching YA both should be Male !!

But their nails still short so still a while till they fully mature !!

Thanks for the pictures - i am 100% your big one is a girl and is almost ready for breeding ( usually first start to drop egg 7-8" )

While the smaller one which looks like a girl COULD be Male ( longer tail - boy like )  !! The plastron opening where the tail is has lost its ( inverted V ) BUT the plastron is quite flat( girl like ) ??? So i only dare sex it 60 % boy - do monitor its behaviour over the next couple of months ( if it is a boy he will or should have start ramming the girl )

In indian star tortoise world girl (10-13" or more ) will grow up bigger than Boy ( 8-9" max )

Cheers

Sifu,

Does it even possible for cross breeding between species? It is next to impossible to find Egyptian tortoise currently, and I am very sad if my tortoise have to life alone without a life partner sad.gif

Yes , possible but many eggs will be infertile !!

Hi, I've been reading TTT thread for many years and this is my first ever post. First of all, I would like to say a big thank you for those knowledgeable and experienced hobbyists for willing to share their valuable and useful knowledge so that beginner like me can know more about how to take good care of a tortoise. This thread had taught me a lot .I am also feeling proud and glad that a lot of experienced hobbyists in Malaysia are actually breeding the tortoise. Especially for those endangered species. I really think that it is part of our job to stop the endangered species from being extinct and it is also my ultimate goal as a hobbyist. I will continue learning so that I can finally breed them one day and stop them from being extinct.
I currently having a pair of radiated tortoise. One of them is growing smoothly but the other one is having the problem of fused scutes.
The one that have fused scutes is around 8 inches long.

As for their diet, I feed them plantain, hisbiscus flower+leaves, cabbage, opuntia cactus, mulberry leaves, sweet potato leaves and sometimes carrot. I bask them on a daily basis under the morning sunlight(7-9am).

I tried to brush the fused scutes using a toothbrush everyday but nothing seem to have changed. I understand that it might be hard to recover since the tortoise is not that young anymore but I just don't feel like doing nothing and let the fused scutes to be worsen by time. Are there anything else that can be done to improve the fused scutes of my tortoise? Thank you very much smile.gif

Someone posted this picture on this thread a few Version ago !! Looks like the exact same few scutes as yours that got fused togather !!

No update from that poster ....... !!

So............ whats the point of having a one sided discussion with no feedback later on !!

Cheers

I know that feeling when you are like reply to you own post. I feel sorry about that but I can't control how people choose to post and run away. I can only assure you I won't do the same thing as they did. I will be more than willing to share my knowledge and experiences about this species, if I have any. I am still on the process of reading all the posts in TTTthreads all over again, but this will take months.Hope I can find more information about radiated tortoise as it is one of the rare and e ndangered species.

Well, the only thing I can say is I feel sorry but I can't do anything since I can't control their action..
So you should pass your knowledge and experience to me and let me be the next sifu, then I can at least discuss with people and contribute to TTT community like you did.
Without student without sifu right. If nobody willing to teach and pass the knowledge to noob like me, all sifu will be gone one day, and all the new "sifu" will never be as great as the old sifus flex.gif

phew, I just found the picture that you mentioned about in page 33 of TTT V4, after reading for 4 hours straight, but I never noticed any useful and effective treatment for fused scutes yet. Guess I will have to continue reading all the posts rclxub.gif
