The sponge like thing act to filter out solid waste and house bacteria but capacity alot much lesser compare with bio-ring.
Your tank not cycled... high ammonia & nitrite will kill your fish. Keep dosing those Live bacteria daily, don't restock the dead goldfish,
the tank this size, 2 poo-maker(goldfish) is enough to turn it into septic tank.

Thank you so much. I do frequently add in bacteria into my tank, and after your post, I went and added in more tongue.gif

Btw, how could you tell that the high ammonia/nitrate is killing my fish? I highly suspect that it's the overcrowding issue instead since I read that goldfish needs at least 6-10 gallons of water for 1 fish BUT I have like 6 fish in 3 gallons initially doh.gif

Here's a pic I just taken:

I'm thinking of getting those test for ammonia/nitrate. What do you recommend?

Ahh I see, I also read it could be due to water being too cold right? That's will make their swim bladder shrink or something?
Got an exact measure just now, 13"X 6.5"X 7.5" which is around 2.7 gallons or 10.7 Litres. Quite small right?

Reason why I got 2 filters was because when I had 6 goldfish, it seems that goldfish produce A LOT of waste and tons of ammonia into the water. The filter I was having (on the left in the pic) was horrible, so I was guessing it can't keep up with the rate of the fish are excreting those wastes. The water become quite cloudy also. I then got a 2nd filter, roughly about the same type but it's a biological filter type BUT it's so damn noisy and it's quite unbearable, so I'm not using it. And now it's the current one from Jeneca, and it's just awesome man.

Ya, my mistake to put in 6 pearlscale goldfish to start it off with doh.gif sweat.gif

I do know the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule. So which means I can only keep three 1 inch sized fish?

This fish looks nice but it says minimum needs 20 gallons doh.gif doh.gif

Was also thinking to upgrade to a bigger tank sad.gif I think my parents might kill me since I cannot even manage a small tank like this, what more a big tank? But LuQEE did mention it will be cheaper in the long run for a bigger tank hmm.gif

why limit yourself to just goldfish & guppy , there are many nice dwarf fish to keep like Tetra , galaxy rasbora & other rasbora type etc.

for you and those newcomer to fish keeping/aquascaping with fauna , read those first about tank cycling.
http://fins.actwin.com/mirror/begin-cycling.html
http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php
http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles_51/f...ing-article.htm

If you are serious and for long term usage then i would like to recommend to you API freshwater master test kit(cost around rm100++)
if not you can just save cost by getting the ammonia & nitrite tester separately.
You read the above link and you will know how ammonia & nitrite kill your fish.

below is 20L tank, previously housing shrimps, now temporary keep total 10 blue & galaxy rasbora.

below is 27L clam tank but filled 2/3 water using jeneca filter. have 6 tetra inside

i try to find api freshwater master kit but cant find it. just find the normal test tube with solution type one.

i think my filter like yours kytz. just mine have three part. i put bioring at the water inlet part.

so now i see your aquarium is small.

ps if i wanna to change the fish, guppy is simple n easy but tetra is good. but dont over crowded. one male three female is nice for guppy in that aquarium imho.

Thank you so much. You are of great help thumbup.gif

Those are really good links, especially the first one!

Unfortunately, my last goldfish just died just now. Now my tank is empty. It's Day 5 cry.gif

I think I will just get the ammonia and nitrite/nitrate tester kit and maybe a ph meter tomorrow.

"why limit yourself to just goldfish & guppy , there are many nice dwarf fish to keep like Tetra , galaxy rasbora & other rasbora type etc."

Let's just say I keep using my 3 gallon tank for now, how many of those fish I can keep in the tank? I have some sand at the bottom and 2 potted plants.

45cm(1.5feet) x 30cm (1feet) x 30cm (1feet) = which 40++ litres

10 gallon is 40 liter biggrin.gif

but its quite hard to find a 45cm light...i got myself an LED...

if you get male & female guppies, it'll get overcrowded in the end anyway. they breed like mad, just like the other live bearers..
google about tetras, danios & cherry barbs, they're kinda cute biggrin.gif

Btw, EmilyEmily arrow You guys put your bio rings behind the filter cartridge ya? I put mine here, just above the intake pump, because behind the filter cartridge there is tight, and if wanna clean it will have to always position it back. Would this be ok? I have 5 pieces of ceramic rings...

syafiq, if urs is hob, the waterfall will introduce some bubbles. its normal.

if its canister filter and quite noisy, then maybe got air inside the cannister.

Or maybe its just simple pearling (plants giving out oxygen bubbles) smile.gif

either way, nothing to be afraid of if ur fishes is going ok.
